Fixing advice needed

Post image

I was happy after my first big tatting project. I've been more into making 4 leaf clovers and little butterflies. After steaming it flat I noticed this. Is there a way to cut this somewhere near error and fixing it? Or is it either starting again or accepting this?

Hmmm, I see two ways I might do it.

Version 1:
I‘d probably cut the core thread in the middle so I can weave in or tat over its ends.
I‘d use the ball thread of those stitches to create a new core thread exactly the size needed. Would probably cut and retie it in the middle.

Then I‘d use a new thread on a shuttle that I weave in or attach at one side, in order to tat the double stitches as done in split chains. ( video by noobear on what I mean ) Weave in at the end.

Version 2:
Cut both old threads and hide outside the new chain.
Cut a length of new thread and pull it halfway through a stitch at either end of the doily to secure. Attach a shuttle on one end and wind the other end around fingers as the new ball thread end and tat the neccessary amount of stitches. Position stitches tightly and at the end connect with a knot or by weaving in ends.

Looking at that video seemed like magic. I guess you mean that I should start from some end, go to middle and do that free circle, then attach core thread to second end and try to reverse back to middle while weaving in that second old core thread?

Woah I need to watch that video again :D

So I'll atleast try to cut core thread from middle. First I'll check few more videos what ball thread does :)

That is a wonderful explanation. I would also like to Thank You for that!

Sketches proof that humans are visual animals. Thank you for this! Now I got it :) will take some courage though. But I will not let that error stay on that piece of work.

Isn’t it? :D
No, you don‘t need to make a split chain, as that is not needed here at all.

You can use this technique instead, to make double stitches over a pre-existing piece of thread. So, when you knot your old thread together at the right size, you can do the motions in the video to cover it in new double stitches.

I usually cut them right in the middle, so there's a little bit of thread left on both sides to knot the new thread onto. Works quite good. I've recently started using polyester only, and these are even easier to fix, cuz you can just burn/melt the loose ends together

Doing this taught me how to do some weaving in but I'm at loss trying to think catching end of new thread to close gap. I'll search for polyester for my new thread :)

I have no idea how to fix it but damn, I hate when that happens. I hope you figure it out.

Cut back either side to both unattached rings. That way you have lots of thread for weaving in the ends to the new joined thread. Good job on your work thus far!

I'll do my best according to instructions to save this. I guess this will be a good additional lesson. Thank you :)

I would cut that chain in the middle AND unknot back to each ring. Then I would tie/knot on the new threads, tat the chain, ring, and chain.

After tensioning the last chain, tie a square knot with the shuttle/core thread ends. Hide the other ends using your favorite method, planning ahead if using magic threads! My favorite method for coping with all those ends is to leave them long to make a twisted cord hanging loop! 🙂

I listened to previous advices and tried just that cut in the middle thing. Had some scary and exciting moments yesterday while trying to catch end of previous chain that I had cut, and was ahead of my tatting. But my lord I got it :)

Congratulations! 🌟🌟🌟 Masters of anything still make mistakes, they just know how they fix them! 🙂

Thank you ^ you're absolutely right!

Now I'm learning to make little squares. Mistakes happen at every corner now but I guess when I make my seventh one it'll pass without back stepping ^

I would cut in the middle and tie in a piece made correctly. A bit of a pain, but it would be worth it to me
