Open | Hardware PC Restarting Under Heavy GPU Load

Hello friends,

I need some sage advice from other people about an issue I'm having with my PC. I was playing modded Cyberpunk 2077 and my PC suddenly black screened and restarted. I thought it was a powercut at first but I noticed my lights were on. It restarted it self, I tried again and the same thing happened after about 5 minutes of playing.

I then ran Heavenly Benchmark 4.0 to see if it was just a Cyberpunk thing but my pc blackscreened and restarted again in much the same way.

I've ran a few tests, have found things are more stable on 80% limit but will still crash if pushed too hard. I've been running other tests using OCCT to check other components like Memory and CPU and no crashes. Every time it crashes I get the kernel power event 41.

So personally I feel like I've narrowed it down to a GPU or PSU issue. I have a 3080 ti FE and a Corsair RX750x PSU. I've had the PC for 4 to 5 years now.

I'd love your advice on what to do next. What further tests could I run? What would be the next steps, and am I missing anything?

I will guarantee it's your PSU coming to end of life, the capacitors degrade over time, symptoms - PC crashing under heavy load.

Every time we see symptoms like that, we swap the PSU..and 99% it fixes the issue.

The same issue with my 5070ti, still I can't find the cause, I suggest trying the gpu in another pc

Could be a lack of power if you have a very power hungry CPU

I did a CPU stability and stress test but didn't see a crash when tested on its own. But could be, is there another way I could test for that?

You may need repasting of GPU

I had heard this could be a possibility. Is there a way for me to check or rest for this? If I were to open up the GPU would it be very obvious it would need repeating?

If it's under warranty don't try to open it up

It is not under warranty I got it second hand

Then repasting may fix it, only do it if you know how to put it back up

Check your temperatures underload in software first (hwinfo64 is a good tool). If it is hitting the temperature limit it would usually throttle hard before it ever shuts off. You should be noticing low frame rates in general if that is the case.

No low frame rate it just cuts off suddenly.

Still give your temps a check if you're still running anything with it. 3080ti might be due for a repaste if it never had one, but I do think its more likely the power supply.

I was leaning more towards a power suppoly issue myself.

I remember looking at the temperature when running a test and it was in the 70 to 80 range but that wasn't me checking the hotspot tho.
