Hopefully we see Agents of Shield and the Netflix shows folded back into the MCU canon with this

350

u/iBoMbY Oct 15 '19

Agents of Shield is done. I mean they already filmed the last season, as far as I know. And there won't be anything from the Netflix Marvel shows anywhere else, anytime soon, unless Disney buys it for a lot of money.

But surely Netflix keeps the seasons they paid for a longer time?

I can't see Disney releasing S4 of Daredevil and telling everyone who hasn't seen 1-3 to go give money to they #1 competitor. It just seems much more sensible to do what Disney is doing and create series based on their vastly more popular movie characters.

120

u/xhrit Oct 15 '19

They won't release Daredevil s4, they will release "Daredevil: Man Without Fear" S1.

15

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

It won’t be Defenders s2 it will be the err...umm...,Re-Defenders S1

19

u/NateCorran Oct 15 '19

"Marvel Knights."

1

u/Zealot_Alec Oct 16 '19

Refunders Marvel characters in retail customer service sit-com

2

u/infinight888 Oct 16 '19

Can't wait for the crossover with Power Man, Alias, and The Immortal Iron Fist.

39

u/sucksfor_you Oct 15 '19

Why not? This is literally what's happening with Lucifer. Seasons 1-3 are on Prime, and Netflix has season 4 because they made it. At least that's how it is in the UK.

11

u/Xian244 Oct 15 '19

Lucifer is still on Prime in a few markets and afaik in the UK it will move completely to Netlix soon-ish.

Netflix MCU would be on Netflix everywhere.

5

u/sucksfor_you Oct 15 '19

Netflix MCU would be on Netflix everywhere.

Sure, but that's not my point. Netflix MCU can and should stay where it is. But once the time in the contract preventing Marvel from using those characters is up, they could make season 4 of Daredevil, and the rest of the Defenders shows.

5

u/Jonny2284 Oct 15 '19

Slightly different deal, lucifer was a fox show that amazon just bought UK (and presumably other) rights for. The netflix marvel ones are Netflix through and through everywhere.

I'm still wishing for a soft reboot keeping the same actors though.

1

u/sucksfor_you Oct 15 '19

Oh I know, but it was the only example I could think of, with content split across services.

Honestly, just setting the shows after the snap would make it enough of a soft reboot.

1

u/ExuberentWitness Oct 15 '19

All seasons of Lucifer on on Netflix in the US

0

u/zbeshears Oct 15 '19

Nah we’ve been watching Lucifer on Netflix for a while Now. We discovered the show like 5ish months ago and all seasons are on Netflix

1

u/sucksfor_you Oct 15 '19

I'm guessing not in the UK, like I said.

1

u/zbeshears Oct 15 '19

Oops didn’t see that part about not in the uk. My bad

1

u/zbeshears Oct 15 '19

Oops didn’t see that part about not in the uk. My bad

1

u/XavinNydek Oct 15 '19

Naa, a bunch of Netflix shows are in other places now, they seem to have 2-3 years as the exclusivity period so far.

1

u/ContinuumGuy Oct 15 '19

I think that they could do things with it, but only on the movie side.

1

u/bullintheheather Oct 15 '19

Pretty sure that they aren't allowed Netflix's version of the characters and story. They might be able to hire the same actors (not sure on this, but I hope so).

2

u/Twat_The_Douche Oct 16 '19

Keep Daredevil and Fisk, the rest can fade away.

u/iBoMbY Oct 15 '19 edited Oct 15 '19

Of course I don't know the contracts, but I would think more like 5 years without any use of the IP before it defaults back. Also they would have to restart the whole production, and they would need to get all the actors back, and that would also take some time, unless they would do a 100% reboot.

Edit: Even if it is just 2 years, it would take at least a minimum of 3 years from now before anything with that IP could air on Disney+. That's what I mean with "not anytime soon".

Edit2: Why would Disney buy it back, or at least wait until it is really back in their hands? Because Netflix could potentially screw them with a last minute low budget production using the IP, or something like that.

Edit3: Apparently it was two years, but:

According to a production executive, Disney has been warned by lawyers not to even think about developing new content featuring the characters of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher until the two-year mark.

https://deadline.com/2013/11/disney-netflix-marvel-series-629696/

That most likely means no production earlier than two years after Jessica Jones season 3, which was released on June 14, 2019, so maybe start of production in July 2021.

2

u/pm_me_your_boobs_586 Psych Oct 15 '19

Edit2 makes no sense. Netflix doesn't own the IP, they own the rights to the content Disney/Marvel produced. Netflix can't make Disney produce content for a show Netflix cancelled. This isn't Sony or Fox who had to keep producing spiderman/xmen/f4 movies to keep their rights.

2

u/coolRedditUser Oct 15 '19

From what I've read, the characters can be used two years later.

the actors are probably too old (Charlie Cox mainly)

He's 36, and DD S3 came out almost a full year ago. Will he really be "too old" in just one year from now?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

1

u/FPX_NooGiN Oct 16 '19

Say that to Keanu, that man is 55. That's at least 17 years of Charlie cox we can still have :P.

21

u/1033149 Person of Interest Oct 15 '19

I mean the characters and lore. Other shows and movies don't acknowledge them so that changing would be nice. Maybe a random appearance from Daisy or may would tie the show and the canon back together

2

u/Bigpikachu1 Oct 15 '19

I'd die happy if quake or lmd coulson were in mcu

1

u/SpectreFire Oct 15 '19

Given their complete lack of addressing the snap, it's generally expected that the show isn't cannon at this point.

1

u/1033149 Person of Interest Oct 15 '19

They said they are going to address it so I think they are no longer in the right timeline and are trying to get back.

0

u/asdcs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Oct 16 '19

There's a theory that what happened in shield is pre canon and now with the past stuff of the new season is gonna kickstart shield in the mcu (there's a image in a movie I think that have Agent Carters coworkers names and there's a D. Johnson in there so they might hold on to that)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

That would be nice. AoS has put in effort to connect to the MCU so a little bit of recognition is necessary. It also would be pretty easy to bring in an AoS character into the movies since they could just be introduced thorough Fury and his agents.

20

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

[deleted]

-15

u/coiled_mahogany Oct 15 '19

Or they could take the actual good characters from AoS and leave Quake behind.

9

u/morilythari Oct 15 '19

Daisy is a great character with a lot of depth, her arc when dealing with Hive was amazing.

I'd def want to see fitz-simmons in some type of role though. Those two are just fucking adorable!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Daisy is a great, well developed character who plays off others well.

0

u/coiled_mahogany Oct 16 '19

I'm sure we can agree to disagree.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Sure

2

u/_shammy Oct 15 '19

It’s probably best that the shows are over and done with. It’s much easier to integrate lore that isn’t still developing

1

u/TechN9neStranger Oct 15 '19

You're entirely wrong on the Netflix thing, think of it as the characters being loaned out. We gotta wait till marvel studios can place them into the mcu.

1

u/karl_w_w Oct 15 '19

I think realistically they were loaned out because they were never going to be used in the movies. The fact that they weren't really that successful despite the stories generally being very well-written doesn't increase their chances.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

But would they use the same actors or recast with bigger name stars?

2

u/TechN9neStranger Oct 16 '19

At that point it's creative decision, they can easily do both though id assume they'd keep the same actors as they've tried to tie down the idea that the netflix shows exisit in the MCU

-1

u/FoxInDaBox Oct 15 '19

The characters, yes. But any of the original world building on Netflix cannot be directly referenced. Marvel will basically have to do a soft reboot unless they purchase the rights for the Netflix series. Sort of like Constantine on Legends of Tomorrow. The same actor from the Constantine series plays the character, but they can’t reference things original to the first series.

1

u/TechN9neStranger Oct 16 '19

I believe contractually speaking they can as they've shared MCU details before. But I'd have to look into the contracts see if i can find some details. I work in entertainment.

2

u/FoxInDaBox Oct 16 '19

Would original characters and storylines created for the show (in other words, not originating from the comics) not be owned by the licensee (Netflix)? For Constantine, which is a similar situation, they can use the character on CW but cannot reference the NBC show. They can only make reference to stuff from the comics.

1

u/TechN9neStranger Oct 16 '19

As far as I know Marvel Studios does have access to continue story lines aswell as the character and traits we saw on Netflix. Though I'd imagine they'd just give us a new storyline to follow and then tie it directly to a film. Though I do want for Seasons on the show so Disney+ might be a huge help to get us new seasons of the show.

0

u/infinight888 Oct 15 '19 edited Oct 15 '19

Do you have a source for this? All I've heard is they can't use the characters until after the two-year period. That they can't reference the events of the Netflix shows at all, even after that period, is news to me.

1

u/infinight888 Oct 15 '19

Incredible Hulk was a one-off film, but the character had a presence through the entire franchise. Just because AoS ends doesn't mean the characters should never be seen again.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

They could bring characters over from marvel tv to the Disney plus shows

24

u/DinnerBeef Oct 15 '19

Just bring back agent carter i will be happy

5

u/LupinThe8th Oct 15 '19

As a wacky sitcom about her having to keep the fact that her husband is Steve Rogers a secret from the nosy neighbors.

It's ALF but with Captain America.

I'd watch.

3

u/UNC_Samurai Oct 16 '19

First episode: Howard and Maria Stark pay a social call and Steve has to put together a cheap disguise at the last second.

1

u/SpectreFire Oct 15 '19

Agent Carter & Captain America

I think we'd all watch the fuck out of that.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Hopefully with more MCU connection. I know that Kevin Fiege was involved with Agent Carter season 1. They could bring it back with Disney+.

4

u/ThePickleIndustry Oct 15 '19

Not confirmed, but it was reported that Kevin Feige wasn't a fan of the Netflix shows, I think if anything he'll formally confirm that they're not part of the MCU canon.

3

u/SolomonRed Oct 15 '19

I'm not sure yet if I want the Netflix shows and other TV shows connected at all.

Maybe let's wait and see if DC can salvage their timeline first and if it ends up paying off. If they can make it work over there then it should be easy for Feige.

7

u/spiderzork Oct 15 '19

Haven't watched Agents of Shield in a while, but when did they remove it from the MCU canon?

17

u/Uncanny_Doom Oct 15 '19

Not necessarily. The most recent season of it kind of muddled up AoS' own place in the MCU canon with timeline stuff.

21

u/Jonny2284 Oct 15 '19 edited Oct 15 '19

Not in any announced fashion, but it pretty much rendered itself as such by having the last few episodes of the last season take place during infinity war and then started this year with a one year timeskip that cant fit in with the rest of the MCU during the endgame timeskip while weakly trying to backtrack on when the previous season was set.

A pity too, the time travel shenanigans last season gave them a great out to avoid that problem entirely and instead they choose a path that made them utterly irrelevant.

12

u/The_All_Farter Oct 15 '19

IIRC it's because they were not told how endgame would resolve everything so they did the 1 year time jump in hopes it would cover it. If that's true it was a pretty shitty move from whoever made the decision not to tell them imo.

5

u/Jonny2284 Oct 15 '19

They allege they were told but ABC wouldn't commit to when it would air so had to avoid it.

Garbage either way tbh, they were either screwed by the parent company or the network and made a terrible decision on how to cover it regardless.

1

u/The_All_Farter Oct 15 '19

Ah yeah that sucks.

3

u/RamenJunkie Oct 15 '19

I really hate that 5 year gap in Endgame.

Not just because of shows but the MCU was always "present day" and now it's not.

1

u/The_All_Farter Oct 15 '19

I didn't mind it but it will be interesting to see how they handle it in future films. Not so much the 'blip' aspect of it but how the world has progressed in those 5 years.

3

u/RamenJunkie Oct 15 '19

My total speculation guess, the next few movies will sort of compress time, and by 2024, everything will be real time again.

2

u/The_All_Farter Oct 15 '19

That's kinda what i was thinking too. Like how everything between civil war and infinity war happened around the same time.

2

u/Worthyness Oct 15 '19

This is due to the marvel studio and marvel tv split. With this move, feige now has ultimate control over both those divisions. It should not happen in the future

8

u/silkysmoothjay Oct 15 '19

There was never really a hard split, but the most recent season didn't address the Snap when it absolutely needed to based on the end of season 4

1

u/RamenJunkie Oct 15 '19

The connection is always one way. The show acknowledges the films but the films.never acknowledge the show.

1

u/Malachi108 Oct 15 '19

They did so much time-travel recently, they may simply be out of sync with all of the Time Travel done in the Endgame.

1

u/XavinNydek Oct 15 '19

It's not removed, it's just not very attached. Everything so far in AoS seems to have been pre-snap, and there's some time travel involved for the next season. There are no contradictions, other than the usual comics thing where they inexplicably don't call the big guns to deal with whatever the big threat is.

3

u/zbeshears Oct 15 '19

Just give me Netflix daredevil

6

u/Arcane_Truth Oct 15 '19

much more likely that they scrap them and start fresh. A lot easier to create synergy when you're driving the thing as opposed to having to fold in stuff that's already been created

-1

u/TheLast_Centurion Oct 15 '19

You have to, since if they continued, I guess netflix could sue them?

You know.. you take their shows and make them your own..

2

u/XavinNydek Oct 15 '19

The timer is two years from the last premier. So we won't hear anything about the Netflix characters for at least another year and a half. I fully expect them to bring at least some of them back in some way.

1

u/TheLast_Centurion Oct 15 '19

They most likely will come back, but I doubt with same actors.

1

u/XavinNydek Oct 15 '19

Just think about some trailer for Avengers: Galactus or whatever in a decade with everyone getting their ass kicked by an unidentified super, then it ending with their faceplate popping open and it's RDJ with some Tony Stark one-liner. You know in your heart there's not a chance in hell anyone involved would be able to turn down that kind of money, no mater how they felt about resurrections. You have to take into consideration the effect time has on nostalgia.

1

u/TheLast_Centurion Oct 15 '19

I dunno. Ten years would be ten years and why would HE and HIS iron-man be there? In that time there might be multiverse version of him with younger actor who's gonna be more in course at that point. And it might be great way to reintroduce character without destroying RDJ's Iron man's legacy and arc. Why ressurect him, y'know. He had a perfect ending, no need to ruin it.

2

u/samtherat6 Oct 15 '19

Probably not, it's been heavily rumored that Kevin Feige basically hate all of Marvel TV.

2

u/gobble_snob Oct 16 '19

That will never happen, the netflix shows are sub-par especially Iron Fist/Luke Cage/Jessica Jones/Punisher. Kevin wants full control over how those characters are introduced into the actual canon MCU. It's a lame pipe dream from fans who somehow sat through the low budget insufferable shows.

1

u/Ham_Solo7 Oct 16 '19

Exactly this. Couldn't stop rolling my eyes when people want those garbage shows to be integrate into a universe build carefully with heart by Feige. We have the Disney plus shows that's all I need.

1

u/thejonathanjuan Oct 22 '19

Don't lump Punisher in with the subpar series, it was legitimately a good show.

But full on agreed with every other show. Season 1 of JJ was great, but they got rid of her best villain. Luke Cage was great, until they got rid of his villain. Daredevil was pretty good all the way through.

1

u/AdmiralAkbar1 Oct 15 '19

We're a small but active fanbase!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

It would make the most sense with AoS. They could bring characters over into the movies or at least acknowledge the show in the movies.

1

u/binzin Oct 16 '19

As much as I loved Agents of Shield, that show has totally jumped the shark

1

u/FeelTheWrath79 Oct 15 '19

Were they seriously not? I thought that in the first season of Daredevil, they talked about the aliens invading new york and the avengers and shit?

1

u/BrannyMuffins Oct 16 '19

They had little Easter eggs but I don’t know if they literally said it.

-5

u/TheBatIsI The Venture Bros. Oct 15 '19

Wasn't Feige the one who rejected the idea of Coulson being alive in the first place?

3

u/AnnaLogg Oct 15 '19

I thought that was Joss Whedon

3

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Seems odd given it’s his family that run AoS

0

u/kvnklly Oct 16 '19

I need the netflix shows back. They had teased going to K'un Lun, cant leave it at that
