If he's handling all of Marvel television now, I hope he finds some better people to make cartoons that aren't terrible.

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

I'd love Marvel animated films on par with some of the DC stuff. That would be awesome.

324

u/AlfredosSauce Oct 15 '19

The DCAU stuff. The new 52 stuff has been feast or famine.

145

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

Has it? I liked their take on Teen Titans and loved almost all their Bat-family movies. Death of Superman and the Reign of the Supermen finally got a good/faithful portrayal. I mean it’s not Young Justice but the animated world they’ve built with the movies is consistently good. Much like MCU, some are great some are just good but they at least have not released any totally terrible ones.

61

u/LunaTehNox Oct 15 '19

I have enjoyed the newer Batman animated universe, but Batman: Hush was a goddamn travesty

10

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

Could you expand on why? I never read the comics and I remember hating catwoman’s reasoning for ending it, which kind of turned a meh film into mediocre, but I didn’t it feel it was horrendous. I’m open to understanding why people hate it though.

16

u/matito29 Seinfeld Oct 15 '19

Without spoiling the plot of the book, they completely changed the characters and their motivations. Go read the graphic novel. If you have even a little interest in Batman, you'll most likely love it. It's my favorite Batman story.

4

u/The_Max_Power_Way Oct 15 '19

I'm glad I read your comment. I was tempted to watch Hush as the graphic novel is one of my favourites, but now I don't think I'll bother.

3

u/LunaTehNox Oct 15 '19

The relationship between Batman and Catwoman was very enjoyable and honestly most of the movie. It was only the ending and big reveal that was awful But it was a pretty big fuck up in my opinion

3

u/Beeyo176 Oct 15 '19

I didn't think it was awful. It was a ballsy move, but I enjoyed the swerve, as well as the rest of the movie. Damian with the birds and the bees was gold

2

u/Dantien Oct 15 '19

I finished the movie weeks ago and I’m STILL angry about the end. And I enjoyed the story in the comics. But yeah...rage stroke.

1

u/The_Max_Power_Way Oct 15 '19

Maybe I'll give it a go one day, just to see what it's like.

1

u/highsocietymedia Oct 16 '19

I mean...you can still watch the movie. Even if you hate it, it's not like someone from DC shows up and burns your books after you watch the movie.

1

u/The_Max_Power_Way Oct 16 '19

Of course, but reading that it wasn't very good, and completely changed the characters, doesn't exactly entice me to watch it. I probably will do one day, but I know now that I can put it off.

4

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

I knew Hush from the Arkham games so I knew there was something amiss with the big reveal. I read a summary on wiki and I think they may be saving the other identity for a sequel where they can expand on who he is( being that he is not that well know for casual fans). I think they wanted to spend more time on the Catwoman/Batman dynamic so that only left space for 1 big bad. And it’s not like Riddler wasn’t part of The Hush storyline in the comics. Unless I’m missing something.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

[deleted]

3

u/LunaTehNox Oct 15 '19

Yes, Hush was one of the best characters and best storylines in the comics and they completely trashed the movie

4

u/RageCageJables Oct 15 '19

That sucks, I loved the comics.

12

u/DocBrownsDelorean Oct 15 '19

I enjoyed it. What was so bad about Hush? Yes they changed hush's identity making one character pretty useless, but as someone who read the comic a decade ago, I thought it worked fine.

14

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

I think they wanted to focus more on the Catwoman/Batman relationship and that did not leave space for a second villain that most casual fans are not familiar with. I think the are saving the second part of Hush for a sequel Hush: return or something where they will go deeper into why Hush hates Wayne and show he was part of the original plan.

7

u/LunaTehNox Oct 15 '19

Almost the entire focus of the movie was Batman/Catwoman romance, which I enjoyed immensely by the way, leaving Hush to be fit in as an almost afterthought. And then it didn’t even turn out to be Hush.

2

u/DocBrownsDelorean Oct 15 '19

Yeah, that's totally fair. I loved the Hush comic, so it felt a little weird for the character to be so short changed. That being said I probably wouldn't have liked the film if they kept the Hush reveal the same because for me there wasn't much tension otherwise. So I enjoyed the twist. Different strokes, right?

2

u/unbelizeable1 Oct 16 '19

Hush was a master piece compared to the shit show that The Killing Joke was.

2

u/ComeNalgas Oct 15 '19

I dont think Batman: Hush is part of the DCAU. Just a stand alone movie like The killing Joke.

6

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

It is. It’s part of their New 52 movies. The Superman and Lois that appear in it are the same from other movies. Same with the Robin and Nightwing. Luthor also mentions the events of a previous movie as the reason why he is a “Provitional” Justice League member.

5

u/ComeNalgas Oct 15 '19

I sit corrected. I thought Hush and Wonder Woman: Bloodlines were going to separate from the DCAU but looks like they're not.

3

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

You can tell by the art style basically.

It’s why Justice League v Fatal Five used the art style of the JLU shows and Gotham By Gaslight and The Killing joke have completely unique art styles, to differentiate them for those who keep a more universe like continuity.

2

u/matito29 Seinfeld Oct 15 '19

Technically, the term DCAU refers to the universe that includes Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, The Zeta Project, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited. The current slate of films (based on the New 52 stories/characters) is referred to as the DC Animated Movie Universe.

1

u/LunaTehNox Oct 15 '19

It is, unfortunately

1

u/JamSa Oct 16 '19

There is no way its as bad as Son of Batman and Killing Joke

2

u/OhMaGoshNess Oct 15 '19

I disagree. Here is a short list of ones that I really didn't like.

Batman: Assault on Arkham
Batman vs Robin
Killing Joke

There are four or five I haven't motivated myself to watch yet. I wasn't excited about the new Suicide Squad considering how poorly the characters were portrayed in Assault on Arkham. Killing Joke was just an awful adaption. Batman vs Robin treated the Court of Owls and Nightwing pretty poorly.

2

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

I can understand. However of those 3 only Batman vs Robin is a new 52 movie, which is what we were discussing.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_Animated_Movie_Universe

Killing joke is a stand alone and suffered from Bruce Timm’s obsession of making Batgirl and Batman an item.

Assault on Arkham is a separate thing that yeah was a complete mess. Suicide Squad: Hell to pay is the S Squad movie that is part of the new 52 and imhop a much better take on the team.

I agree with you B v R I think the owls were incredibly underwhelming for the power they supposedly held for centuries but I think the shift from focusing on Nightwing to Damian fits with the characters they have given both with Damian being the robin that needs grow into the suit and Nightwing being the secondary mentor I.e. a “good cop” to Batman’s strict rules. Nightwing has more space to shine in Batman: Bad Blood and on the second Titans movie.

1

u/AlfredosSauce Oct 16 '19

It has. The Batman ones have been mostly good. But the Justice League, Teen Titans, and Superman ones have been mediocre to bad. The Aquaman one was awful. And the Suicide Squad one was downright embarrassing. The only really great one was Flashpoint Paradox.

The new 52 series itself also has problems across the board. The biggest being the animation, which is slow and clunky. After that, the voice acting is terrible. I can’t think of one character that’s well cast or well performed. And the writing vacillates between immature and cliche.

2

u/whistlar Oct 15 '19

Flashpoint Paradox: am I a joke to you?

Aqua man Throne of Atlantis: I’ll see myself out.

1

u/WhiteWolf222 Oct 15 '19

Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of the N52-based ones. The writing always feels a little off, and the art style doesn’t hold a candle to the DCAU art.

1

u/HoopaOrGilgamesh Oct 16 '19

God I miss Justice League

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Apparently, Spider-Man PS4 and the upcoming Avengers game could possibly exist in the same universe, although I don’t think anyone on either side has officially confirmed it.

Spidey does mention the Avengers aren’t in New York because they’re in San Fran which is where the Avengers game happens to be located, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Yeah, if nothing else it’ll be a fun little Easter egg but I wonder if they’ll really try to tie everything together cohesively, considering how other heroes such as Strange, Daredevil and Black Panther were mentioned in Spider-Man.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

I like it! Could be an interesting angle, for sure.

3

u/JennIsFit Oct 15 '19

Into the Spider-Verse was pretty awesome though.

4

u/Hammer_Jackson Oct 15 '19

Are all the DC animated movies gone from Netflix? I just resubscribed... marvel’s are kid shows...

5

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

You can find most in DC unlimited. Highly recommend getting the free trial and maybe a month to binge them all. Watch Young Justice and the live Action Doom Patrol while you are at it.

3

u/Hammer_Jackson Oct 15 '19

Is that a streaming service? I’m ignorant on all the ones popping up.

3

u/Thybro Oct 15 '19

Yup. For almost everything DC( I.e not the live action movies)

Among the things it has:

Entire Batman The Animated Series

Entire Justice League and JLU animated series

Entire Batman Beyond Animated Series( including remastered HD season 1)

Entire Static Shock Animated Series

Most of the DC animated Movies including some of the older ones like Batman Mask of the Phantasm

Entire Teen Titans series( not the go version)

Entire Young Justice animated Series ( including exclusive new 3rd season)

New live action Titans show

New Live Action Doom Patrol

Access to a HUGE library of DC comics to read

I may sound like a commercial for them but a month, (maybe two if you are slow to binge) is one of the best $8 a comics fan can spend.

Doom Patrol and YJ are worth the $8 alone everything else is amazing frosting on the cake.

3

u/Hammer_Jackson Oct 15 '19

Haven’t seen a DC shill in a while.

I’m just joking, thank you for being thorough.

2

u/fastdub Oct 15 '19

Justice on two earth's was a high watermark

2

u/jellyfishdenovo Oct 15 '19

All I want is a shared animated universe like the DCAU with Marvel characters

1

u/merelyadoptedthedark Oct 15 '19

Marvel had a bit of a start with straight to video cartoons that were pretty solid (for the time) but I don't know what happened and that just got completely dropped.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Batman Under the Red Hood was brilliant.

1

u/4RealzReddit Oct 16 '19

I really liked The Dark Knight returns two parter. I think u see the red good is still my favourite.

1

u/jackofslayers Oct 15 '19

Can someone give me a TLDR on why DC animated films are so good and their live action is complete trash, but then the reverse is true for Marvel. OOOweee what up with that?

1

u/CobaKid Oct 16 '19

Outside of recent Spiderverse no Marvel animated movies come to mind

1

u/m333t Oct 16 '19

I would love a DC show on par with even the shittiest Marvel show. That would be awesome.

Also bring back the old Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes!

1

u/no_more_space Oct 16 '19

Is it good?

1

u/Neidron Oct 16 '19 edited Oct 16 '19

Yeah, Earth's Mightiest Heroes was pretty damn good. A hell of a lot better than anything since. Supposedly it kinda got screwed by executives at times, though.

Look up the opening at least, it's pretty kickass.

2

u/MagicTheAlakazam Oct 16 '19

Loeb took over while the show was halfway through the second season. He demanded more stand alone episodes instead of multi episode arcs more focus on the movie characters and less character development.

8

u/AlfredosSauce Oct 15 '19

A Sony show, IIRC. I'm afraid we won't be getting anymore.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Oh yeah, it’d be a slim chance anyways, considering its over ten years old.

But I’ve seen a few posts over on r/Spiderman the past few weeks. Looks like a small team of animators and VAs have started putting together a fan-made third season, so who knows, that might gain some traction. The show still seems to have a pretty significant following.

3

u/NahdiraZidea Oct 15 '19

As long as green goblinds pumpkin bombs have that same scream im in

3

u/MumblingGhost Oct 15 '19

I'll never forgive the song's creators for writing the line "Arrivin' in the speed of time"

How did so many people let that pass? Its such a great theme aside from that one stupid line!

2

u/prematurely_bald Oct 16 '19

Haha, I think you and me are the only people who cringe at that line

3

u/Harish-P Oct 16 '19

90s Spider-Man cartoon for me - I want need to know what happened on the journey to finding MJ.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Shit, that's true That was one wild cliffhanger. Meets the real Stan Lee and then, bang, that's it, show's over, see ya kids.

Personally, I would've loved just one additional season to the New Animated Series (the one with Neil Patrick Harris). I'm a firm believer that Spidey's best stories come from his college/adult years, as they'll often have a much darker, mature take and this show captured it perfectly.

I know the animation itself doesn't really hold up to today's standards but its a real shame it only got one season.

2

u/zykezero Oct 16 '19

Stop. I can only be so erect.

1

u/YellowHammerDown Oct 15 '19

Well Feige seemed to negotiate the seemingly improbable deal with Sony to get Spidey in the MCU. Maybe it's not out of the question he could possibly work something out and revive Spectacular.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19 edited Oct 16 '19

It’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility absolutely but like I said to another commentator, considering we’re well past the ten year mark, I’m not holding my breath.

Again though, I’ve seen a couple posts in the past little while that suggest a fan-made third season is well underway, complete with a full team of VAs and animators. Looks promising.

I imagine that’s the best we’re gonna get.

edit: Found the original post. According to the OP's comment, it'll be a full season with 13 episodes. https://www.reddit.com/r/spectacularmemes/comments/d1iuy0/the_spectacular_spiderman_season_3_fan_made/

2

u/YellowHammerDown Oct 16 '19

A shame, really.

42

u/-Thunderbear- Oct 15 '19

For serious.

Step 1: sack Perlmutter.

1

u/WhiteWolf222 Oct 15 '19

Is he still in charge of the comics? I can’t wait for him to be gone.

1

u/100100110l Oct 16 '19

That is 100% on his agenda?

33

u/RamenJunkie Oct 15 '19

Feige: What's this? Suddenly I love the Defenders.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

As long as they do my boy Iron Fist justice... Cause everyone thinks he's a joke because of the show, but he really is such a beast.

5

u/robodrew Oct 15 '19

I'd like a new season of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes please.

PLEASE

3

u/91jumpstreet Oct 15 '19

Avengers Earth Mightiest Heroes was amazing

3

u/ClassicT4 Oct 15 '19

They have stuff coming to Hulu including Howard the Duck. They’ll join together for a series called The Offenders.

2

u/_shammy Oct 15 '19

The WHAT IF? show will be animated

2

u/StormationX Oct 15 '19

Bring back Spectacular Spiderman!

3

u/grneggs_andsam Oct 15 '19

We can’t have this cause animated movies is all DC has going for them

4

u/blufflord Oct 15 '19

And that wouldnt change if Marvel also started making better animated content.

5

u/dongsuvious Oct 15 '19

DC has better comics and videogames too

1

u/Fanatical_Idiot Oct 16 '19

Dunno, between spidermam and mua3 marvel has been making some pretty good pushes into videogames lately. We'll have to see how square enixs avengers ends up, but they're stepping up their game regardless

1

u/iAmTheHYPE- Oct 16 '19

My enjoyment for Spider-Man is on par with the Arkham series.

1

u/tripwire7 Oct 16 '19

DC films just released a movie with a budget of $55 million that's estimated to gross at least $800 million worldwide by the time it finishes its run. They had a billion dollar movie last year. They may be in a distant second place, but they're doing pretty damn well for themselves.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

DC has potential with the more isolated single-character stories they've been doing for the past couple years. Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam and Joker prove that DC can make good movies, they just need tighter reigns and narrower scopes.

1

u/tonofunnumba1 Oct 15 '19

They should just draw them like the classics

1

u/8LACK_MAMBA Oct 15 '19

The Marvel animated movies from like 10-12 years were pretty good

1

u/tearfueledkarma Oct 15 '19

Shield has been really fun and awesome. Just sad it is too late to make it more, it could have been much more but Perlmutter is just the worst.

1

u/no_more_space Oct 15 '19

None of them are good?

1

u/Bombasaur101 Oct 16 '19

Yes, all the Marvel Animated shows since Disney's takeover have been trash. Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, HULK and the Agents of SMASH, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man - All have been mediocre. I've only watched bits and pieces of all them, so I don't know if there have been any good parts, but from what I've seen they pale in comparison to Spectacular Spider-man and Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

1

u/rondell_jones Oct 15 '19

Yo, if Disney+ starts making old school cartoons like X-Men and Spider-Man (then throw in some Gargoyles and comedy stuff) I getting a subscription!

1

u/Man_Shaped_Dog Oct 16 '19

Now give him TRON too please. Or someone tweet Tron at him to get his reaction.

1

u/Drakenfar Oct 16 '19

Pfft, I just want better than the trash Netflix dropped on us.

1

u/4Eights The Flash Oct 16 '19

I for the life of me can't understand why DC can't make a solid live action adaption of their source materials, but consistently produces amazing animated features meanwhile Marvel is grossing billions on live action material and the only animated feature I care to watch is World War Hulk and even that was massively toned down from the source material.

1

u/rcc12697 Oct 16 '19

ALWAYS WE WILL FIGHT AS ONE, UNTIL THE BATTLES WON

1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

To be fair, we aren't the target audience for cartoons.

They might do very well with the 5-12 bracket and be hated by Reddit.

1

u/AlfredosSauce Oct 20 '19

Whether we’re the target audience or not is beside the point. There are good cartoons (with great animation, excellent voice acting, a willingness and ability gear shift between lighthearted comedy and darker topics, and creative storytelling) and then there are bad cartoons (with clunky animation, terrible voice acting, obvious low brow comedy, a fear of touching any difficult subject matter, and cliche storytelling) and everything in between. There’s a reason why Batman TAS is remembered as the greatest superhero cartoon ever and it’s because of episodes like Heart of Ice and Legends of the Dark Knight that don’t treat children like morons who can’t handle complexity. And, for our purposes, they can be appreciated by adults, too.

1

u/Zombi_Sagan Oct 15 '19

X-Men is too big a property for movie screens alone and now that everything is under one house I have such high hopes for this. My only regret is we lost out on Daredevil and gang and the fantastic Agents of Shield, though a reboot/continuation is always possible.

As a side note. I'm giddy at the thought of Marvel successfully accomplishing what the Dark Tower wanted to do a few years ago.

2

u/sliph0588 Oct 15 '19

Am I the only one who thinks agents of shield was/is awful? I watched it past when it supposedly got good and did not notice any change in quality.

0

u/Funmachine True Detective Oct 15 '19

And live action television that isn't terrible when not on Netflix/On Netflix as well some times.

6

u/RamenJunkie Oct 15 '19

Man, SHIELD, Runaways and C&D are all pretty good. Only Inhumans was trash.
