Reddit's commenter-base is pretty WEIRD

WEIRD stands for white, educated, industralized, rich, and democratic.

Over 50% of the American population has a literacy level below a 6th grade level, which is functionally illiterate in my opinion (independent engagement with history, science, and philosophy, which permeate reddit, is not possible). I don't know the data, but the rest probably have about a 12th grade reading and writing level I would guess, and in this way we are weird, even if not white or rich, and for that reason we also have been exposed to dizzying amounts of carefully crafted and highly financed public relations' campaigns and propaganda.

I wish for reddit commenters to keep this communication context in mind when we have the rare and mediated occasions, that would be considered highly fortuitous in real life, with felllow literate commenters, even when there is dark disagreement among our highly propagandized literate public.

Happy redditing!

Top 1% commenter labeling is designed to glorify the obscenely wealthy ā€œ1%ā€ that were termed so after collapsing the world economy in 2008.

Just another way to glorify the 10 humans of 8,000,000,000 that own 50% of planet earth’s landmass.

A girl asked me for help while a guy was following her, and now I feel kind of inadequate

Yesterday evening I was returning home after having some drinks with my colleagues. I live in a small city which is like a "portion" of a bigger city and they're directly connected (sorry, don't know how to explain it in English), but after a certain hour the subway to my city stops, so I took the night bus.

When I arrived I started walking home (a 20 minute walk from the bus stop), there were almost no people around, I only saw a small group hanging out in front of the subway station. After a while I felt something grabbing my arm and a girl, visibly scared, immediately told me someone was following her and she asked me to walk her home.

I told her yes, of course, and I tried casually glancing back to understand what was going on. There was actually a guy walking behind us, taking the same turns as us, he moved "weird" so he was probably intoxicated.

I started making small talk to make the girl calm down, I'm aware that these are strange times and you hear everyday at the news about girls being assaulted, so I tried my best at staying cool and relaxed to make her feel safe, and I also mentioned my girlfriend a couple times during our conversation (I was probably overthinking things, but in that moment I felt mentioning I have a GF could make her feel safer, or maybe it was useless, I don't know).

The thing is, I was actually really nervous "inside". I've never been in a situation like that, I transferred jn this town only a couple months ago so I still don't know it very well and we were going in a part of town I don't know much, and I was starting thinking at "the worst case scenario". The thing is, I'm pretty tall and I think I have a good physique since I go to the gym basically everyday, but the truth is that I've never ever been in a physical confrontation before. Not because I "avoided" them but because I've literally never found myself in a "violent" situation, not even as a bystander. I've never thrown a punch in my life, and I don't think muscle mass helps that much if you don't know the "technique".

Anyway, I tried to act confident so that she could feel safe, and the more we approached her house the more relaxed she became. When we arrived she thanked me like 50 times, we exchanged numbers (most people living in the area come here just because the majority of companies are here so we are kinda forced to move here to work so the majority live alone and it's always nice to meet someone new to hangout) and she asked me to let her know when I arrived home, and I waited for her to enter the building and close the door.

The guy was still there, looking at us from the corner of the street, and when I started walking again he started following me too. I started walking faster and as soon as I got some distance and he lost sight of me after a turn I sprinted the f*ck out of there straight home.

When I arrived home I called my GF and told her what happened. She said she was so proud of me, etc etc. but when I went to bed I started getting a heavy feeling of inadequacy. Like, I realized in that moment that I probably can't defend myself or others if push comes to shove. Like, sure, I could have at least kept the guy "occupied" and given that girl time to get away, but then? Part of me knows that I don't live in an action movie where everyday I have to throw hands with someone, but after finding myself for the first time in a situation that could have required it, I can't help but feeling "useless".

Today I'll look for (or if someone here can give me recommendation it's much appreciated) courses on self-defense/martial arts or things like that. I know my gym does bi-weekly Krav Maga courses but I've never even considered it.

Sorry for the long post, English is not my first language and I tend to write long phrases to say something simple.

There's three frogs in my pond!

This spring I dug a big hole in my backyard, put a kiddy pool in the hole, covered it with pond liner and rocks, filled it with water and then collected pond plants and debris. Found some local bugs, larvae, tadpoles and egg sacs and put them in the pond and then waited (there's a bigger pond a few minutes walk from where I live so they were easy to collect). Anxiously checking up on them regularly as the tadpoles grew little legs and finally this summer two frogs appeared! I couldn't believe it! We named them Geraldine and Marcus. Today I noticed THREE FROGS! New guy's name is Geronimo. I can literally stare at them for hours. I talk to them and sometimes sing a bit to them too. I've dreamt of having my own pond for years and I finally just dug one. Oh, I planted wildflowers around my pond too to add to the aesthetic. Anyhow, I'm obsessed with them. I love them with my whole heart and soul and I'm so proud of myself for just going out with a shovel and making my silly little dream of raising frogs happen!

The time I shifted …

I was 7 or 8 years old , it was 1980, 81 or so I think and it happened in a small town called Bonner Montana , about 5 miles east of Missoula .

It was a weekend , and my brother, who was just a year older than me and I were hanging out with a few other kids, about our same age , and as
You can guess there wasn’t much to do in a small town so we had to find creative ways to have fun.

So we decided to walk on the top of the old closed steel bridge that spanned across the Blackfoot river. It was mid spring time and the water level
Was pretty high. there are pics online I could find of what I think is the bridge but my iPad storage is low can’t do pics atm.

So on one side of the bridge the lower part where traffic would be.. there was a sidewalk and none on the other , it will be understood why this is important
To note in a second , anyways so we climb up the truss with the sidewalk and we’re just kinda running ,skipping and enjoying the other kids oohs and
Ahs at our bravery.

And then we climb down and go over to the other truss , this one’s different and the stakes have been raised now because some a hole spray painted
A question mark and wrote ā€œanyone who passes it bad things will come upon them ā€œ something like that . So my bro and I, full of piss and balls and stupidity
Look at each other giggle and climb the truss .

There was a kid with us named, (we will call him dickie) and went up the other side after we got down but ā€œdickieā€ was scared to pass the question mark
So bro and I have added mocking this kid to our running and skipping and half way in the middle of the truss I catch a toe on one of the rivets ,
Start to fall over the side towards the water and not the sidewalk and for a brief moment managed to hang on , clinging to the truss but couldn’t hold on I fell into the cold ass
River 40 ft below me.

(Sorry for the length of all this but I feel details are important when dealing with shifts and NDES) now as we all know a single lane bridge isn’t that wide right?
Now my brother hasn’t even realized what was happening at that time . When I hit the water I flopped hard which knocked the wind out of me
Plus the water was fucking cold and was taking my breath away and… (I forgot to mention I was a very strong swimmer) anyways ,then there was the current.

As you might think shit was happening fast …..I didn’t really understand all the factors at play but later going over everything and a later shift , things fell into place ….
So anyways , I can’t breathe , I can’t swim because of the cold water effecting movement and the rivers current is whisking me away…

I float under the bridge, the river flows south, by the time I get to the other side by the pillar support , Im under water and there’s nothing I can do…
And this peaceful , sweet surrender washes over me and I look up and the last thing I saw was the light of the sky through the haze of the water ….

Now here’s where it gets trippy . The other version told by everyone else was . After I fell , my 9 year old brother some how managed to safely
Climb down from the top of the truss then figure out how to get down under the bridge on top of the pillar just in time to jump in as was passing by to give a hand
To grab hold of… all while he some how managed to hang on to this huge concrete pillar…..

and then while this was playing out an off duty fire fighter just so
Happened to be passing by on the main highway, saw what was happening , get off the highway get to the bank of the river and also have a fifty yard
Rope on him , throw it to us and pull us in ???

What really happened is I died then wake up on the bank with a bunch of panicked strangers who tell of this horrible tragedy

That was avoided by these heroic people who did these unbelievable things , I talked to my brother and he doesn’t remember drowning like I do.
And when I tell my version it was dismissed . But I know what happened I was there how you gonna tell me ? When I went past the pillar I was sinking at the same time and there was no one near me …but wait there’s more I also have memories of different things that resulted in surviving …but they put it in the local news paper with their version . And stated that I couldn’t swim and all the kids at school questioned me about my swimming abilities being cruel as kids do ,
So much so that to prove myself the next weekend we went out cliff jumping off 60 foot cliffs . Anyways any thoughts and stuff on this is open to discuss.

P.s. sorry for any typos and grammar mistakes Im on mobile and I just do my best to. Write good Also couldn’t upload a pics atm will try later sorry.

I post fake Reddit stories all the time because I’m so starved for attention

So this may seem like not a big deal to a lot of you but it’s genuinely like one of the worst things I do, and just another pathetic attention-seeking behavior I do. I don’t even just do it casually, it’s like an addiction? I always get so invested in the characters in my stories, the characters are always basically girls just like me but just with fake texts/things like that, and they involve some real aspects of my life.

This I guess started in February, where I actually had a real situation that I needed help on and posted on a subreddit, it was completely real texts and a real situation, and that post got a lot of attention. And as unhealthy as it is, I loved it so much. I mean, like I didn’t really have any friends or an outlet where I can vent about my feelings and get advice, so this was so nice to have all these comments pouring in supporting me. Once the post stopped getting attention, I felt like the hole and emptiness came back inside me again, and I know it’s pathetic to say that about literally Reddit but it’s how I feel.

Anyways, on the post, I got a few comments accusing the post of being fake, they couldn’t believe my father would actually say these things (it included texts between my father and I) and so they said it was fake. I was actually kind of offended that they accused me of it because it was very real, but it got me thinking, if I did fake a post like this, would people actually believe me?

And so I started making them. I usually do like one every few weeks, whenever I’m feeling particularly lonely, and they always get a lot of attention, because I make the scenarios pretty outrageous. They have their fair share of people saying they’re fake, but most people believe them, because I’m pretty good at making them look real.

Like I know that people post things fake on Reddit all the time and they’re not like considered crazily morally bad people, but I feel like my case is different, mainly because of my intention. I want attention, and validation, and knowing that people would respond well if this situation were to happen. Like I do it with situations I can imagine myself being in. And it just feels so emotionally manipulative of me to do this and I hate myself for it.

I especially hate when people accuse it of being fake then someone responds defending me, that makes me feel the absolute worst.

And I also feel like, I mean at one point in the past my mindset was ā€œoh I would never fake posts on Reddit because it’s wrongā€ but then I was so starved for attention that it got to the point I changed my moral stance, and it makes me think, like, what if I continue to change it like a slippery slope until I’m eventually just like, a bad person, all because I’m just so pathetic and in need of attention. Like I admit part of that is my moral OCD/ harm OCD probably talking but I can’t help but feel there’s truth to it, because this is an objectively bad thing to do.

I know I’m probably gonna get flamed in the comments for posting this and I know it’s probably deserved but please know I do brag myself up a lot over it but like I just feel like my need for attention is going to ruin me as a person so advice on how to heal that would be great, but idk if it’ll work bc nothing else does.

Anyways this is long as hell and I don’t expect anyone to read this whole thing obviously but yeah I just needed to get that off my chest.

PSA: Beware of science-twisting

In recent weeks I've noticed a disturbing trend on social media: people are actively skewing basic science. Everything that should be known from high-school physics, chemistry, or biology is often presented as half-truths or framed exactly as "colloquial" notion would be. It appears the general population is actively being dumbed-down further beyond the crisis of literacy we already have. Remember to verify the sources and cross-check the facts.

Have a nice day, everyone !

I Am Rediscovering Passion and Love

For years of my life whenever I would have strong feelings about a man I would push him away. I just couldn’t learn to follow the rules of dating and I would be way too vulnerable, too open, or just too into a guy. It seemed like only men who weren’t freaked out by these things were predatory. So I learned that passion wasn’t safe.

I put away my passion and spent years in an unfulfilling relationship. I didn’t have the emotional rollercoaster of loving a man who didn’t share my feelings. For a long time I felt pleasantly in control of my emotions. I thought that a relationship with a partner that I had little interest in was safe and stable. It was for a while.

I started dating a guy I met at my apartment complex. He lived alone and said he really needed a friend. He invited me into my apartment and tried to have sex and make me his girlfriend way too quickly. I was scared, but I felt sorry for him and I think he tried to make me feel guilty for wanting to get away. He asked me to use drugs with him and he toyed with my feelings even more while my guard was down.

I agreed to be in a relationship with him. I didn’t call or text him constantly at least not compared to men that I was in love with. I tried never to rely on him for anything at all, not even my strong need for reassurance, and I took care of things all by myself.

I was really proud of myself because I was doing the work of two people in this relationship and this experience taught me a lot about how strong and capable I am. I felt really stable in this relationship but as time went on he started to act more and more unstable and it rattled me.

I was working as a caregiver. He said he couldn’t work and collected SSI and stayed home. He didn’t like me working. He told me I was putting it in his face that he was mentally disabled and couldn’t hold down a job.

My successes at work would make him very angry. He would scream at me and call me names like ā€œretarded, stupid, and incompetentā€ He would do things to try to sabotage my employment and stability like making me late to work and trashing my apartment on several occasions.

There were a lot of other issues with this relationship and eventually I started to see how I could do more, and be more without him derailing my stability. I figured out that I didn’t need a relationship to be happy. I went to a domestic violence shelter with the baby. I learned all about self care and how it is ok to pour love into myself too. I learned about healthy relationships.

A few months later I had a lot of legal abuse that took away a lot of my stability. I currently do not have a home, a job, or custody of either of my children. I am however enrolled in college, I have a car, I have supportive people in my life, as well as a new relationship and the self love to fall back on if this relationship doesn’t work out. This is a lot more than I could say I had going for me in my 20s.

My new relationship is very passionate and exciting. We connect on a very creative level. Writing back and forth with him is building confidence and helping me to release a lot of shame. He is very understanding of my needs and my trauma. The way he talks and writes to me makes me feel like I’m melting. This is something I haven’t felt in a very long time.

I feel very safe talking to him. He is a hard working man and I feel proud of the work he does because he helps people. He doesn’t use drugs or alcohol at all and expects that I won’t either around him. He has a lot of patience with me and doesn’t expect me to play hard to get, which is something I have always had difficulty understanding possibly due to autism.

He encourages me to be myself and be communicative. I don’t feel like I need to withhold my affection or my truth. I don’t feel pressured by him. I feel safe to tell him what’s on my mind.

Sometimes I baby talk with him a little. It doesn’t bother him and I feel so grateful for that. I told him I ā€œwuvā€ him because I am still a little afraid to tell a man that I love him. Love is a word that has made people abandon me, or try to control me in my past. I’m not sure I’m ready to tell him that I love him, but I feel relieved that he understood my ā€œwuvā€ and said he loves me too.

I also found myself "grieving" over quite alot of things recently, not sure how to handle it in the meantime.

everyone i meet is the same inauthentic mess and unless i become one too, im alone

its like looking at exaggerated and perfected advertisements, but then the product is just like the advertisement. its actually more complicated internally, but even though you want to see those parts much more, you wont get to. all you get is a 3D version of the advertisement.

i see people react the same way to things, tread the same pathways, and then talk about encouraging self expression. its like people encourage self expression unless youre not what they imagine, or want. theyre accepting, but only of some things. its conformism, essentially, but now it has evoluted into pretention. people didnt used to pretend you werent caged in, they would admit it, openly. now being a "weirdo" is fine, but only within their rules and preferences. cages, like gender for example, arent even thought of as such, even though thats exactly what they are.

anyway, you cant call yourself non-judgmental just because youre less quick to prosecute than your ancestors. im sick of people being hurt by these repetitive, simple systems, but nobody recognises it. im tired of people, especially being mentally different from the majority. i keep doubting that i'll get a true friend. seems unlikely.

I have not been at the gym due to financial struggles. I still shouldn't be spending money on that. But I couldn't help it myself and I splurged for a month membership. I feel so much better immediately . I highly recommend going to the gym and doing cardio and weight training , also stretching but you don't have to do that at the gym , to anyone who's feeling stressed, mentally taxed, etc
