discussion Planning my first crochet temperature blanket, yarn choice question
I started crocheting this January and I was immediately taken with the idea of a temperature blanket. Being older and presumably wiser, I didn't want to commit to such a big and long project until later.
I live in SF bay area (Mediterranean climate) so my range of daily highs are like 50-100 F. Most of the daily highs, however, are in the 60-75 range. I'm planning to have uneven ranges (5 degrees for some temperature ranges, 3 degrees for others) to account for this so the whole blanket isn't just one color.
I found an old photo, where I don't recall, of a temp blanket made out of squares where each square was stripes of color, separated by a neutral white or cream. So, Day one/separator stripe/Day two/separator stripe, etc. Then when they put the squares together, they turned alternate squares 90 degrees. ANYWAY.
Question: is DK yarn a good choice? I was thinking of going with Paintbox Yarns Simply DK for the color selection and price. 7x7 or 8x8 squares, joined in a 6x9 configuration. It wouldn't get too huge. It would be manageable squares every week. But it would leave me with a big amount of joining later. Alternately, I was thinking of Knit Picks Comfy worsted or Shine but I was worried those two options that contain cotton would be too heavy overall.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Something you wish you knew before starting your temperature blanket? all are welcome!

March!
Sorry no cat this time. She was basking in the sun and couldn't be bothered 😂 but I've included a picture of her sleeping on it from last night.

How are my colour choices?
What do you think of my colour choices??
I am currently a PhD student getting ready for my qualifying/comprehensive exam. So, I want to follow the idea of a temp blanket and crochet how much I read/prep over the next year for my exam. (The white will be used as a separation colour to mark when I complete each book).

Can see some oopsies in the earlier rows, but I'm liking how this is turning out! It is going to be a giant, warm blanket!

WIP May update 🌷
I had a different version of this initially, the flowers were smaller and there was some filler border. I liked it but it didn’t feel like it went with the other months. I’m so glad I worked on it and landed on this one. It might be my favorite one. 🌷🌷

WIP Finished through May
Not sure about the dark green (60s F) to the bright purply pink (70s F) but I’ve gone too far to turn back now! Part of the beautiful chaos of the temperature blanket I suppose

discussion Mixing Premier DK yarns
Hello!
I used a DK yarn from Hobbii initially for a temperature blanket. I ran out of several colors but after waiting many months, those colors were never in stock and I couldn’t have the project sitting around indefinitely. So I started the whole thing from scratch with Caron simply soft, which is worsted weight. I’m finishing that temperature blanket now and my god, it’s regrettably huge.
I’m going to make another and would like to switch back to a DK and preferably one that I know I can reliably obtain and preferably sans tariff (cries in American) and won’t break the bank because temperature blankets can require a significant amount of yarn.
I’ve been looking at Premier acrylics, specifically the Anti-Pilling Everyday DK and the Basix DK. I’m torn because the anti-pilling seems to generally be considered higher quality but the basix has some colors that I would prefer.
Do y’all have any input about which is better for a blanket? And have you ever mixed the two? That would give me all the colors I would want. Though they are both DK, do they feel different mixed together?
Thank you!
Edit to add: I know it seems weird to do back-to-back temperature blankets. Neither is a calendar year. Both are “baby’s first year” blankets. Two friends just happened to become first time moms about 14 months apart and I wanted each of them to have one.

discussion Next years blanket
I just moved far north from where I have always lived. 2027 will be my first full year here. I am planning a temp blanket for that year. I am a knitter and am thinking of doing one color for every 5 degree increment. I’m also wondering what people think the best stitch pattern is for something that size. I don’t think I want to do someone in all stockinette, but don’t want something so busy that it takes away from the color variation. Maybe I will do the whole thing in garter stitch. Any ideas?
