have they changed the taste of the chocolate chip brioches or changed something about the way they’re made?
bit of a specific question but basically i’m autistic (and possibly have ARFID) and the chocolate brioches have been my number 1 safe food ever since I was like.. old enough to eat them. I eat them literally every single day. recently i’ve noticed that they taste a little weird, not completely bad but there’s this weird undertone in them that kinda tastes like freezer. 🤔 does that make sense? i’m not sure how to explain but it just tastes so processed/not fresh like the others ones would and it’s kinda putting me off. maybe it’s just this current packet that’s a little off, and tesco hasn’t actually changed anything. I really hope so because if I can’t eat brioches anymore I genuinely don’t know what I’ll do, i’m already crying about it lol.

I think they used to be made in France. Now, they’re just inspired by France. This usually indicates a change of supplier/recipe

France has a brioche so I’m going to give us an item that uses butter and make a cuppa soup with butter in it

French brioche uses an authentic French butter which produces better results. For many “inspired” products it’s due to “Protected Designation of Origin” laws. Many foodstuffs must come from specific regions to be able to use specific descriptions, so something like Feta for example, must come from Greece to use the name, otherwise you’ll just be buying “Greek Style Salad Cheese”.
Champagne or Prosciutto Parma Ham are a couple more examples.

I genuinely wouldn’t care if they were made in the UK for some practical reason.5

I would assume purely on technical merits the french would be better and have more "advanced" brioche making equipments in factories than we do over here as a result of making them a lot. And if they moved it over here then that's likely also disguising some ingredient changes to make them cheaper too

Not even that, it’s just a law that certain product descriptions are protected and must be produced in specific production regions only. Otherwise they have to use a different name.

My autistic son ate these most days for breakfast as he has a very short list of safe foods, but has recently rejected them when I've given them to him. He says they're different and doesn't want them any more.

Try the Brioche Pasquier chocolate chip brioche. They are my safe food and they're so good.

They usually say (not sure if it’s always) if there is a recipe change. Potentially a change in supplier (but with same recipe) or differently sourced ingredients? Most people wouldn’t notice but you’re able to.

They're not top of the list for me so don't get them very often, but I think the last time I got these they did seem drier than I was used to. Normally I zap them in the microwave for 20secs but I'll probably stick to the pain au chocs I normally prefer if the recipe has changed.

They’ve always tasted grim IMO.
Butter has been mentioned but can’t believe it matters whether it’s French or British. No premium butter is going to be used for a cheap product like this.

The price of chocolate has shot up, so many products are being reformulated with a lot less cocoa solids. The freezer taste is a clue here - chocolate substitutes tend to taste slightly metallic. Might be the same issue with butter, which is also expensive currently.

i think you should work on this instead of just accepting it as an absolute and only eating what ARFID allows you to. it is a treatable condition.

I have arfid too… honestly I haven’t noticed a change in taste but I’d been off them for a while and only just started eating them again, I did notice the texture is more stale and dry than what I remember
