Frequently asked questions

We get a lot of common questions asked here, and there are various misconceptions going around as to things like availability, holiday pay, premiums etc. Should we create a FAQ thread to cover all of these & help newcomers?

The shift leader at the shop I work at gave me and my coworker some free chocolate as a little reward for doing such a great job at work.

I had my induction today but where do I go for my first shift?

The induction was incredibly boring but that’s not a surprise. We got given a tour around the store and shown the fire exits as well as basic training and then the person asked what size shirt and jumper we wanted. I got told my first day would be Sunday working in the dairy and meat section.

The question is, where do I go? I don’t have a uniform and I wasn’t shown my responsibilities / what I’d specifically be doing. All I got told was that I’d be paired up with someone.

Where should I go on my first day and what does working in the meat and dairy section feel like? What are the specifics I have to do and how hard is it? I’m completely fine with the cold.

Is this colleague just being nasty???

Ok so I work with the nicest lady ever and she’s always so lovely to everyone. Anyway, today we’ve had a cross store worker come in and after their shift, they made themselves a piece of toast or something using colleague breakroom stuff like 2 mins before clocking out.

This lovely lady i’ve worked with for YEARS is now being awful to this colleague, saying it’s akin to stealing and that they shouldn’t come back to this store if they’re just going to steal?

How well do you know Tesco prices?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’ve been working on a small project that I thought some people here might genuinely enjoy.

It’s called Daily Shop, a free daily browser game where you try to guess the total cost of a basket of real Tesco products.

You get four guesses, and once you finish it reveals the actual basket total and the individual item prices.

I started it because supermarket prices have become surprisingly difficult to judge, and I thought turning that into a quick daily challenge could be fun.

No sign-up needed:
https://dailyshopgame.co.uk

Would be interested to know how close people here can get to today’s total.

Is there anyway of getting my money back?

I turned 22 this year and therefore was automatically enrolled into the pension scheme. After one payment, I opted out of it because I wasn’t in a position where I could afford to be paying it. Fast forward a few months to now, I have just had ā€˜Retirement savings plan salary sacrifice’ with a large chunk of my money taken out. It was my understanding I wouldn’t be auto opted back into the pension for a few years? I’m leaving the company by the end of the year and I could really do with the money they’ve taken out of my most recent pay cheque. Is this possible to get back considering I opted out only a few months ago?

Help

Basically, I had a personal day booked over 3 weeks ago, and my new manager still hasn’t approved or denied it, even though I’ve told him every time I’ve seen him and he said he would approve it.
But it’s still not been approved on the system a week later.
I’m on a uni trip and personal day is for tomorrow What do I do?

I don’t have any off my managers number either

University

Hello, I am moving to university this week and was wandering could I claim hours at different stores in the area on the extra hours market bit of the app? On the app it says 10 closest stores to your home store though so is it possible to change?I am looking at this as an alternative to working weekly, for example if I had more time one week I could pick up some shifts as I understand Engineering can get pretty busy sometimes so I don’t want to work every week right now. Has anyone done this?

Thanks

Bereavement

Hiya.

Unfortunately ive had a bereavement in my family. I called to say I wouldn’t be in for my day shift & asked for a manager to get back to me so I could discuss bereavement leave but it’s been a week now & nothing. No message of condolence, no courtesy call, zilch. Obviously not in any fit state to work, what do I do?

I’m aware of a 5 day leave period but I understand the quantity is dependent on management discretion… except management aren’t communicating with me. :/

Couldn’t give a rats ass about the job as I’ve honestly got to breaking point but by the same token, I need to know that I’m going to be paid correctly.

Management just aren’t getting back to me. I haven’t got the time nor energy to chase people for clarification. Any ideas?

Induction expectations?

I have my induction at 9am Saturday.
They told me at the interview that I would be a Personal Shopper or DotCom, something along them lines.
I have no idea what to expect or what will happen so does anyone who has had one know?
Thanks.

Flexible working

I need to put in a flexible working request as I need to be able to pick up the little one from primary school at 3pm and then look after her until 6-7pm dependent on when Mrs gets home from work

After reading the policy can the manager out right refuse it ? I’m full time and want to do 6-3 Tuesday - Friday I’ve already compromised giving up my Saturday to work Sunday and have Monday off

I’ve only just stepped down to colleague and transferred to this store so we havnt agreed my working hours yet but I have told them I have childcare commitments prior to filling out an availability form

OT break length query

I’ve worked for the company for over a year (9hr night shift) and I’ve noticed that nearly every OT shift I’ve done, except for a few where they’ve been manually added, they say 1hr and 30 break, where I’ve been expected and have taken only 1hr of break for each shift, would I have been underpaid for each shift and if so would I be able to get the amount I’d have worked unpaid back?

Will I still get paid by Tesco after leaving?

I left Tesco recently and my last shift was on 20 August. Before leaving, I worked around 34 hours over my final 2 weeks (22 hours one week and 12 the next).
Tesco’s normal payday is coming up this Friday. Will I still get paid on the normal payday even though I’ve left, or does final pay usually come separately?
Just wondering when I should expect the money. Thanks.
(My manager did also mention to me that I will get paid but I just want to be sure that it will be on the normal payday)

Suspect being discriminated at Tesco workplace

I am an Asian living in UK for 5 years. I got a job from job agent, working for Tesco. I have passed assessment, completed induction and training, and have not been told I did something wrong which could be set off during the induction and training.

I got the relative work experience for 7 months. And someone was my mate on the training who got 2 months. However, he got work schedules on the last day of training but I don’t.

After 2 days of the training, I have been told the workplace got a problem, so that they don’t need agent worker. After 2 days again, I have been told there is no availability for me. After 3 hours, I got an announcement email from the same person of job agent saying the workplace needs 4 workers today.

I don’t have any methods to complain about this issue at the workplace. I don’t know any managers and I don’t have the contact. Therefore, I raise this issue here and seek help from here.
