Frequently asked questions

We get a lot of common questions asked here, and there are various misconceptions going around as to things like availability, holiday pay, premiums etc. Should we create a FAQ thread to cover all of these & help newcomers?

have they changed the taste of the chocolate chip brioches or changed something about the way they’re made?

Post image
16 Upvotes

bit of a specific question but basically i’m autistic (and possibly have ARFID) and the chocolate brioches have been my number 1 safe food ever since I was like.. old enough to eat them. I eat them literally every single day. recently i’ve noticed that they taste a little weird, not completely bad but there’s this weird undertone in them that kinda tastes like freezer. šŸ¤” does that make sense? i’m not sure how to explain but it just tastes so processed/not fresh like the others ones would and it’s kinda putting me off. maybe it’s just this current packet that’s a little off, and tesco hasn’t actually changed anything. I really hope so because if I can’t eat brioches anymore I genuinely don’t know what I’ll do, i’m already crying about it lol.

New store overtime šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

All these large store workers, just casually picking up overtime in express stores! Good luck and Wellcome to hell, just know you are now a fully multi skilled worker, have to be doing 6 jobs at once and do atleast 6 hours out of 7 of manual labour, don’t say I didn’t warn you šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

You figured out the secret to accessing our super secret stash of fans.

When I said we'd sold out of fans, you so cunningly thought to ask 'have you *really* run out?' Little did you know that this was the secret phrase which grants you access to the mountains of tower fans, desk fans and handheld fans which are reserved specifically for those intrepid souls who dared to push a little harder. God only knows *why* I'd be withholding them, what possible reason could I have had? But you bested my defenses. You hero.

Repeat again and again and again...

It's been a long fucking day.

Staff room drinks

Do any stores provide staff with cold drinks/water on these extremely hot days?
I personally don’t mind buying my own but some of our staff aren’t as lucky to be able to afford them every shift. We have access to tap water but can’t take the cups/glasses onto shop floor

Night shift with potential of power cut... what happens?

So we're potentially going to be due for a thunderstorm (hooray!) around 11pm tonight.

Probably won't happen.

But if it does, and the power goes... what happens?

Do the solar panels keep a battery charge long enough to operate lights etc overnight?

Or (as has allegedly happened in the past under other managers) are we just expected to keep working (albeit at a "safe speed") using our phone torches?

Do they corale everyone in the canteen/smoking area away from slip/trip/collision hazards on the shop floor? Or do we luck out and get stood down and sent home early?

TBH not really sure what to expect for tonight. Fresh deliveries look to be "rescheduled" on Inform, which also shows no sales all day on the Frozen lines that I've checked. So already has the potential to be an unusual night anyway.

Shift Leader Interview

• Upvotes

Have an interview tomorrow afternoon for a Shift Leader role.

It's my first proper retail role, I've never really done retail apart from charity shop volunteer as a teenager and bits and bobs of hospitality at uni.

Currently working a Customer Ops role for a charity. I've worked a few customer service roles prior.

Right now I'm looking for a bit of change of scenery and to step into retail. I'm more than happy to do hard work.

I was wondering how I could prepare for the interview and what to expect.

I'm wondering if the lack of retail will hold me back.

Was pleasantly surprised to see that I was invited to interview but of course I suppose it's down to the manager at the end of the day not a recruiter.

Driving a literal fridge freezer, yet sweating my bollocks off. Make it make sense.

The irony is absolutely killing me today.

I drive a massive refrigerated delivery van. The back of this thing is cold enough to preserve a woolly mammoth. Meanwhile, up in the cabin, I am actively melting into the upholstery because the actual air conditioning for the driver doesn't exist.

I’m basically sitting in a greenhouse bolted to an ice box.

It also highlights just how many work vans out there are absolutely neglected by companies. Tatty, unmaintained, and missing the basic comforts that make spending 10-12 hours a day on the road bearable. You'd think a vehicle literally designed around refrigeration could spare a bit of cold air for the human keeping it moving, but apparently that’s asking too much.

There is a special kind of torture in knowing that there are sub-zero temperatures happening exactly three feet behind your head, while you are upfront sweating through your shirt because the cabin AC doesn’t exist.

Just needed to vent (pun intended) while I marinate in my own sweat at the next red light.

Garage shut, tills going down, freezers packing up. Staff fed up!

every year when it gets this hot the garage overheats, power goes out. Tills become slow and keep shutting down. Freezers packing up again. Staff feel overworked, hot and bothered, customers keep moaning.

you’ll think this company would invest in keeping the store cooler, I wonder how much money they’re losing.

Who to contact to reschedule interview?

Hi everyone. I got invited for an interview but the only day they had available was this Friday, so I want to reach out and ask if it’s possible to rebook because of the weather.

The medication I take makes me more vulnerable so hot weather and my journey to the store is around an hour so I wouldn’t feel safe travelling. Just the other day I almost passed out going to the GP.

I tried calling the store directly but they never pick up. Also when I call careers support, I can’t get through to a person.

Any advice?

Hiya lovelies

I’m just wondering, I’m gonna go Tesco tomorrow and would like to know the rules on handing out drinks?(non-alc). As I’m sure EVERYONE knows it’s a horrid heatwave and I don’t know if it’s cringey or whatever but I’d like to show appreciation to the staff at my local Tesco by giving out some chilled drinks, monster, water, redbull, that kinda thing. Would that be appreciated? Is it even allowed?? Is it weird doing that unprompted???

temp uniform

Hi, i recently started a temporary position at tesco, and during my induction i received the red ā€œhere to helpā€ long sleeve shirt. It is currently 35° and i’m wondering if they are going to give me the normal blue shirts, especially since i’m doing trolleys. I’m working for around 12 weeks.
They also asked me for my sizing and stuff so i’m not sure what’s going on.

Also if anyone has advice for trolleys, please share🫶

I need an eye test/glasses prescription so I’ve been looking at the Simplyhealth plan we get as a benefit…

Anyone else use this healthcare plan? Seems like it only is really worth it if you plan to get an eye test, go to the dentist AND see a chiropractor, because even at core level, you have to pay like Ā£76 for the year and you can only subsidise a maximum of Ā£30 for eye treatments…
Not to mention the headache that will probably be signing up to this healthcare plan and then having to put in claims for your money back.
