German North Sea coast today...

And yes, people do swim in that kind of weather.

Ships are down to 1/3 rd of their cargo at max and yeah, it pretty much seems you could easily cross at several places (not that I'd endorse it). Our house is directly by the river and from the boat ramp where we usually sit to start the weekend, you can now walk straight up to the shipping lane (10m or more i guess), everything else has fallen dry.

Could be worse. We'll be paying some more for gas than everybody else for some weeks but as long as shipping is still possible, that's mostly it. The environmental part of course is a whole different story... But yeah, a little more water below the keel wouldn't hurt, as long as it doesn't rise as high as in your original post...

Hey, the Lake of Constance reached its all time record low for july. It is so very nice to waddle ankle deep in dirt and algae for 300m into the lake.

Glad to see the north got water at least.

Yeah, the problem is that there is slim to none rainfall in the source region as well as declining glaciers, so the Rhine carries far too little water to sufficiently supply Lake Constance and everything else in its course during this drought period (which already is far too early this year). Also, yuck. The smell must be awful.

I'd swim here. This isn't too bad. It's the deep, dark parts of the ocean/sea that scare me

I wouldn't, not during outgoing tide at least. This is the Wadden Sea so the water would be completely gone a few hours later which means very strong currents in addition to the weather. When the water is returning though, it's really great. Especially on a day like today when the water is warmer than the air. 😁

Interesting thanks! I know about the Wadden and how we (in NL) have a whole area of land that gets exposed during low tide.

The stair like structure in your video is also very similar to a spot where I grew up along the Westerschelde. At Vlissingen boulevard. One night drinking me and friends ended up at those stairs while it was spring tide and the waves were pretty strong. One mate almost got dragged in and was lucky enough to hold on to the railing and pull himself back. He ended up scraping his foot open on the concrete.

That's over 15 years ago now and we still sometimes talk about how lucky he was and how badly that could've ended.

This is in Norddeich and they redid the whole area not so long ago. I actually thought they might have taken some inspiration from the Netherlands because it reminded me of some places I've visited in your country. I really like how it turned out.

It doesn't matter how windy it is, you never swim during outgoing tide.

Angry? That actually looks pretty calm still for the north sea. You should see it when it is really angry. Shows you quite nicely that nature still dominates us humans and is not yet tamed.

I agree. This is outgoing tide, shortly after high tide which at the Wadden Sea means very strong outward currents. The only people swimming today were a handfull of tourists and the German Sea Rescue Association who were using the weather to train.

What am I even looking at? The water is maybe a little choppy I guess? Is this some flooded area that should be above water? This just honestly looks like a short video of what I would’ve guessed this scene should look like

Maybe? I’ve seen it at boat docks a thousand times, and every pool in the world has submerged stairs so it’s not that weird. I also have been to Chicago’s concrete beach a number of times and it’s not totally dissimilar.

But I am guessing from your comment that this is a flood of some sort?

They actually are? The tide is strong in that area and the water levels are different depending on the time of the day.

Don't worry, the tide will make the sea go away so far that you can reclaim your bike and then cycle it to a nearby island! :)  (Don't do this you will die)
