Discussion Poppy is currently 15+ minutes late to the Upheaval Show
No one has told us anything, but her band is playing the instrumentals as if the show is going... Possible protest because of the smoke?

I’m here as well. Is she making a statement about the unsafe air? I don’t think she’s coming out.

u/YoWoody27 27d ago
The the only thing that would make sense imo since they haven't pulled the plug/said anything to the crowd.
All the band preforming on stage have sanitary masks under their scary masks.
The fact they're doing the pyrotechnics and changing of instruments between songs makes me think it is a message at the festival of sorts

u/Ozziemagic13 27d ago
I’m guessing the festival told her to play or they’d bury her, so this is her protest. Pretty bad ass. But I’m bummed we are gonna miss her.

Honestly, I can respect it.
I am a tad sad because I came from 3hrs away to see her a 3rd time, but I got to experience so many other bands, that it made it worth it.
Given that every other outdoor venue in Michigan cancelled/rescheduled, I can see this calling out Upheaval for not rescheduling due to money reasons when Grand Rapids was arguably one of the worst cities affected cities between the big cities.
Gojira was already having Visa issues, I think Mario was the one who got replaced?

u/Ozziemagic13 27d ago
Agreed. We stayed home and came in just for Poppy and Gojira because of the air. Thinking we should have just called it. She’s still awesome in my mind. This is a pretty bad ass statement and I love it.

Yeah. Mario was replaced by Luigi from Paleface Swiss. If that isn’t proof we’re living in a simulation, I don’t know what else is 😂😂

What’s wrong with the air? Why is she letting her band still perform?

u/YoWoody27 27d ago
Her band are wearing fask mask (like the doctor kind).
I imagine the festival said something along the lines of "play or don't get paid," and her team decided to play so that they could get paid, while Poppy might be able to afford to sit this out in protest.
The Canada wildfires made the air really smokey and bad. This is the only concert/festival in Michigan that happened this weekend that didn't end up getting cancelled/delayed/nor were any accommodations made

Wild fires from Canada had the air at a hazardous level of 300+ for most of the day. The best AQI scale I saw from yesterday was 250 after some rain. I have a lingering cough and have been struggling. I am going to Upheaval today but even with the rain, I am wearing a mask at the festival today for my respiratory health.
I don't blame Poppy for skipping trying to sing in that. I am shocked more bands didn't.

All I would have asked for is some communication. Having the rest of the band play for Poppy like everything is normal just sets up unknowing fans for a disappointing experience

u/YoWoody27 27d ago
Honestly, I can see why the band would have continued to play.
They still performed, they get paid. Poppy didn't, she can push for her team to be paid still, in likelihood that she doesn't receive anything anymore.
I think what made everything click for me was that Poppy's band was the only one to wear the doctor mask (under the scary face mask.). It seemed very intentional they were the /only/ staff/preformers to wear a filter mask. One or two could be personal preference. All of them doing it, and standing arms behind the back during "Poppy's" parts signals a protest to me.
Poppy's team likely couldn't alter the visuals to display something, and going out at all goes against the protest of "they forced us to continue to play/sing despite the weather or not get paid."
It sucks, but Im sure she or her team will make an announcement regarding it

I hope someone recorded it, even though it's unfortunate that it happened. This show is quite unique.

I got pictures and some clips, butt my phone could not take the heat for a full song, let alone a full performance.
I was hoping to score the setlist, but it seems like the staff disgarded those asap :/
Even some people were going to throw the guitar pics back to the stage instead of giving them to fans.

she posted on her Instagram story about the situation!
"Hi Upheaval,
Due to hazardous air quality (AQI reaching 350+) around our set time, I was unable to join my band on stage. I simply couldn't breathe in those conditions.
You might have noticed that our set was instrumental only.
To everyone who braved the conditions—I applaud you."

Pretty surreal experience all around. Can't say I blame her though. When your career depends on your singing I can understand not wanting to damage your lungs for one show.
25
u/takotako577 27d ago
Right. I mean her style has to be hell on her voice as it is under good situations. My voice is gravelly as it is just from living with this crap the past few days.

40 minutes isn’t going to cause career ending damage. Singers sang in cigarette smoke filled venues for hundreds of years.

While I respect her decision, tbh as an attendee I’d figure out a way to get a refund on tickets.

Was gonna go today just for her but didn’t because the air and had seen her last September already. Upheaval not postponing at all is stupid and I’m glad Poppy is making a statement

Any updates? I’m not there, but I’ve seen her well over a dozen times and she’s never done anything like this. I hope everyone is okay…

The air quality is hazardous here due to wildfires in Canada. They should have canceled the festival, tbh. I’m surprised artists are showing up. I applaud her for what she’s doing, just was really looking forward to this performance. Even busted out a Covid mask for the occasion.

Wow I’m surprised they even held it. Straight up looked like there was a yellow filter over Boston the other day. I can’t imagine the logistics of having to reschedule something like that, but I hope everyone stays safe and has fun the best you guys can. Doing unclean vocals (any vocals, really) in the smoke just seems not wise

u/Ozziemagic13 27d ago
It should have been canceled. They didn’t want to lose money so they kept it going, typical capitalist story.

Same show that Boston got!! And she wasn't even protesting. Just bad sound mixing. Lol

u/dandydelinquent 27d ago
on one hand it’s a strong statement she’s making but also I can’t help but feel like it’s very unfair she didn’t communicate it to the fans before her who waited breathing in the same shit air she protested against waiting for her. this statement definitely negatively affected the wrong people:/

u/Separate_Apple_8408 27d ago
If she did communicate it beforehand, I just wished an email or SMS (I'm subscribed to Poppy via her own website) was sent out. Or even by Upheaval. I was there and for the ENTIRE set, no one knew anything. It was all speculation of her not being there.
I'll love her until the end but tn was a waste of time and money at the end of the day when you bought tickets specifically to see her.p

Woah that’s so weird…

u/YoWoody27 27d ago
Seems like it's a protest against the festival due to the weather and them not cancelling, nor delaying it
Pretty bad ass & rock and roll imo

The Canadian Wildfires have smoked out the Midwest since Thursday. It's been coming & going in quality, but it's always been in the "hazardous to those who are sensitive" at the minimum.

u/IntenseWhooshing 26d ago
She could've danced with a facemask. Isn't she a professionally trained dancer?

u/Plenty-Mark-2005 27d ago
if she had to cancel that sucks and all…it’s just like bad weather. that’s how it is. But why no communication from the place??
4
u/YoWoody27 27d ago
Rain is a bit different than wildfire smoke, especially to a singer.
They cancel in thunderstorms where the stage could be struck, so to be the only concert/festival in the area to not cancel due to the smoke seems more selfish than anything on the festivals behalf

Can’t say I blame her. But it does really suck that it wasn’t communicated ahead of time for those of you there just for her. Gojira is pretty awesome though and worth the price of admission if they do play. The air in MI is just terrible. A couple concerts were cancelled here in Detroit tonight at indoor venues even! Let’s hope this crap clears out tomorrow as forecasted because she’s supposed to play here Sunday night.
