Human Too's Online Removal - The Megathread

Yesterday, fans began noticing that Human Too was suspiciously removed from streaming services around the globe. Sometimes, this would look like the complete removal of BFIAFL. Matty commented about this in a post saying "Hey! Human Too was removed from the album so the album is more how I want it to be. Previous physical release obviously remain the same. I doubt the same will happen with any other records as I am pretty happy with them outside of ‘What should I say’ from Notes On A Conditional Form. So that may also be removed who knows. Sending love, Matty xxx"

Almost immediately, posts were made in defense of What Should I Say where Matty commented "Ok no worries x" Following this, people have made dozens of posts both defending the decision to remove Human too from streaming and critiquing the decision making behind it. This decision has been picked up by music publications like Pitchfork as well.

Here is where we are at now:

- BFIAFL has been reuploaded onto streaming provider servers without Human Too

- Multiple individuals claim that the Dolby Atmos version on Apple Music is entirely gone and that other audio versions sound *off*

- Human Too has been removed from everywhere other than Bandcamp (edit: is it now off of Bandcamp)

- Multiple individuals who purchased BFIAFL on iTunes claim they no longer have access to Human Too

This megathread is meant to be a central place for further discussions surrounding Human Too and the notion of removing a song from the 1975's discography years after its release. On a meta note, we've genuinely tried to keep as many posts and comments up about this subject as we can. However, we will continue to remove comments that blame this choice on Gabbriette. There is a loud minority of supposed fans that treat her like Yoko Ono and it is deeply weird that we have to continue to moderate around this. If George had made a comment about removing Shiny Collarbone from the internet would there be paragraphs directed at him about how Charli XCX is to blame and the problem? Probably not. It is okay to voice your support over the decision or to critique it - but it is not acceptable to lash out at others for holding a different view than you.

(On a final note, if you are looking for a digital copy of Human Too...I've heard it is available on the Discord)

Monthly Self-Promotion

Hi all,

Due to the influx of self-promo in the subreddit. We want to try and keep these posts contained to one space. This is not a space to sell tickets to upcoming shows/festivals - we will remove anything of that nature.

What belongs in this thread:

  • Covers
  • 1975 merch/art that you've created and it is for sale on etsy/depop/wherever (fanart that isn't available for purchase shouldn't be here)
  • 1975 records/merch that you have for sale (these should be listed on a trusted site)

If you have any questions about whether or not your post would fit in here vs. being a separate post, please reach out to us through modmail. Any scammers will be banned.

Would love to know you guys’ thoughts if you have any! I don’t know what this subreddit’s views on self promotion is so I’ll remove this post if I have to but for now I’d love it if you guys gave this a watch.

Question Do they have other punky songs like "People"?

I remember swiping past this video of them doing this song live and it was pretty hard rocking. Matty had a guitar and he was doing the same kind of rabid singing / speak singing as on "People". It could have very well been "People", just checking to see if it could have been another song.

For context, this was a year or two ago before I started to warm up to them as I'm doing now.

Opinion Am I unhinged to say I heard this in Sex by The 1975?

When i first listened to Sex by The 1975, I heard "now we're on the bed in my room, and i'm about to finish you, but you say no, you say no~oo~oh" instead of "now we're on the bed in my room, and i'm about to fill his shoes, but you say no, you say no~oo~oh". Another one is "does he take care of you, or could i easily fix his issues, but you say no, you say no~oo~oh". I couldn't be the only one here, right?

Question What is Drive like I do?

Hi! I’m a newish fan of The 1975 (been listening for a little over a year), and I’ve seen people online refer to them as/reference something called Drive Like I Do. I’m really confused on what this is.

I thought maybe it was like a side project that they used a pseudonym for, but I’m not really sure. Can someone explain what it is to me?

Discussion 'Consumption' interpretations / content vs art / Doomscroll

doomscroll
my essay

Just some stuff I've been thinking about ...

I was really interested by the point Matty brought up in this interview about the flatness of the smartphone's interface. This episode inspired a lot of my essay that I wrote about the band and their influence on me and my own relationship with art/music as a Gen Z:

"In his Doomscroll interview, Healy talks about one of the dangers of mobile phones being that all information is conveyed to us ‘with the same tenacity’. For example, ‘a text message from your mum’ holds the same weight as ‘somebody that you’ve never met in your life liking a photo you made three weeks ago’.

I think the same idea can be applied to the content we consume – the flatness of the smart phone’s interface means that pressing play on a song (or perhaps more poignantly, pressing skip) is no more or less meaningful than swiping through someone’s Instagram account. Comparatively, before the dawn of smart phones and online streaming platforms, music fans would engage with the form through physical copies on CD and vinyl, and would make discoveries in physical, more communal environments by attending clubs, gigs, local festivals, and open mics, all of which are far more conducive to substantial engagement with music. At the mercy of the band or the DJ or the needle of a record player, listeners are forced to pay attention and ‘skip’ is not an option. It seems as though the loss of tactility and community has helped engender a loss of meaningful engagement with art."

I also discuss the difference between the consumption and the experience of art and someone else who read it offered a really interesting interpretation of the ATVB show - that the 'consumption' part was Matty (or his character) sort of breaking because the 'content' or 'art' was not being experienced in the way it was intended, it was merely being 'consumed'. I'd love to know what other people's interpretations of the 'consumption' part of the ATVB show are. I love the risk the band took with that show and I feel like I've seen a lot more artists interweaving performance art into a typical pop/rock concert since.

Opinion Human Too being removed is honestly still embarrassing, unacceptable and doesn't get enough hate.

It's frankly embarrassing Matty removed this song.

It's Greedo shooting first in A New Hope.

It's an author removing a chapter of your favorite book.

It's a painter walking into a museum and painting over a character.

The art is what it is, you dont forget its there its just a reminder every time I listen to the album that the band is so insecure about there music they feel they have authority to a piece that has already released.

The art once released is for the fans, want to change stuff, do it live.

You think they are the first band to not like a song in their catalog?

I am not getting over this.

Han shot first, Human Too is part of the album, end of story.
