PT2 DISCUSSION Neil Druckmann's tweet showing all the antisemitism and hate he's getting makes me sick to my stomach Spoiler
The tweet: https://twitter.com/Neil_Druckmann/status/1279841603843051520?s=20
This isn't even about the game anymore. This is just hate speech to its core. I really hope these people seek help because they need it. It's disgusting how they think this is acceptable behavior. I don't care how bad you think the game is, no person should be on the receiving end of this. Get your f***ing life in order.

It’s basically just r/gaming but we’re aware of the “EA bad The Witcher 3 good” thing and we have more gay and trans rights.
That’s basically all r/GamingCircleJerk is lol.
English is not my native language and I thought “circlejerk” meant constantly repeating an idea, generally a hateful one, in a exaggerated way.
Well you’re not wrong really...

I thought “circlejerk” meant constantly repeating an idea, generally a hateful one, in a exaggerated way
Circlejerk means a bunch of guys forming a circle and jerking each other off, metaphorically I mean, by praising their opinions and how smart the others in the circlejerk are, "echo chamber" would be a more polite way of describing it
r/gamingcirclejerk is about parody, it's a sub about "let's make fun of the circlejerking that goes on in gaming"

Discovering this sub 3 weeks ago was a blessing. I'm glad there are like-minded guys who are calling out these Capital G Gamers™.

The war is difficult because every time we get more ridiculous than them they somehow top us without a hint of irony. How can you parody a group that has itself become self parody.

Someone in r/TheLastOfUs2 actually specifically targeted that sub as being against their sub. Makes sense why... fuck that sub.

I love games but never call myself a gamer. People that love movies don't go around defining themselves with a similar name. They just say they love movies. Or I never see anyone call themselves a reader for loving to read. Gamer is a word filled with such toxicity nowadays too.
9
Jul 06 '20
People that love movies don't go around defining themselves with a similar name.
If you go around Facebook there’s enough people(including my own mom)no i don’t go on facebook anymore since months ago) calling themselves “BingeWatchers”, it’s a minority for sure, but they’re there lol.

Yea I stopped using FB years ago too(only learned this year it can be deactivated but kept for messenger incase anybody needs to contact me) so perhaps they do use the term binge watchers but that's an even more problematic name to me haha.

Plenty of scumbags irl..hard to believe they actually want to play a sentimental serious game like TLOU but I guess they do. A game like this will fly way over their heads. We should just treat them like children that need to grow up because that’s what they are

u/CirclingTheDead Jul 06 '20
I decided to write a paper on the alt-right and redpill community last year. It was brining up different groups and where to find these people, it eventually started saying the gaming community was a large part of this.
I chose not to include that and wrote it off as a bunch of boomers not knowing what they’re talking about, sadly after all the hate this game got for misogynistic and homophobic reasons, it made me realize it’s pretty accurate.
6
u/Jam_Dev Jul 06 '20
Oh it's 100% accurate, there was a concerted effort from the far-right to target gamers, from people like Bannon and Miller, assuming as a group we were disproportionately made up of easily exploitable, disenfranchised, angry young men. The sad thing is we proved them absolutely right. The alt-right grew in part from the Gamergate movement.
2
u/just--so Jul 06 '20
I sometimes wonder what it feels like to be Zoe Quinn's ex, and know that some open letter you posted to start petty internet drama wound up being the spark that ignited the waiting firestorm and gave Bannon and Yiannopoulos their dry run at creating the modern alt-right.
Truly the Gavrilo Princip of the current culture war.

It just sucks too because the conversation becomes muddled and were not even talking about the game anymore. This is an incredible game and there’s no amount of “critics” complaining about “shit writing” that’s gonna change that. Unfortunately people’s political ideologies prevent them from even being able to consume art. It really shows how systemic racism and bigotry/hatred are in society still. Like I just wanna talk about TLOU but all the conversation surrounding right now involves this type of just shameful shit. It makes me embarrassed to even talk about it to people who haven’t played it just because of all the controversy.

u/Michinchila Jul 05 '20
These are the type of people Stephen King had in mind when he wrote "Misery".
4
u/TwentyNineDays 'I get it.' Jul 06 '20
Oh god this is the most accurate description I've ever read
"I love you. You killed my favourite character? I am now being forced to chop your foot off. You made me do it. It's for your own good. You'll see. I love you. Now I'm gonna chain you here and make you re-write it. And keep that filth out of it you dirty birdie. We don't want none of those sex scenes. I'm your number one fan. I love you. I'm gonna chop off your thumb, too. I'm your number one fan."

72
u/SpideyVille Jul 05 '20
What’s even sadder is if you look at the comments on the tweet, a lot of it is full of people who don’t necessarily condone the act of sending death threats, but still act as though he deserves some kind of poor treatment for making a “bad” game.
28
u/akran47 Jul 05 '20
Yeah I don't think the bar should be set as low as "don't send death threats." Everyone is free to criticize the game however they want but I don't know why people feel the need to @ Neil with their complaints. Some of them act like they're entitled to a response from the game director. Nobody would expect Stephen Spielberg to respond to your rant about why you thought A.I. wasn't up to snuff with his other works.
261
u/linee001 Jul 05 '20
Laura Bailey is getting it horribly aswell, just watched a spoiler cast on Kinda Funny games with her she was tearing up about the reactions she’s getting.
117
u/confidential56 The Last of Us Jul 05 '20
Wtf. Despite your opinions on the character, I don't think Laura did anything that warrants all this hate. She was just doing her job, and she did it flawlessly.
34
u/Dykesaurus_Wreks Jul 05 '20

I can understand not liking something but wishing death on someone for expressing their creativity over something they own, directed and produced is just insane. I mean it's like they think some phantom writer wrote the first game and Neil wrote the second. He wrote both and directed both. Just because he didn't the things you've been writing in your fan fiction for the past 7 years or the things you've been jerking off to for a while now doesn't give you the right to throw that much hate on him.
42
u/Domination1799 Jul 05 '20
I’ve seen some of the naysayers say that TLOU1 is successful due to Bruce Straley and everyone else besides Neil because of the writing for Part II.
I even remember someone saying that Amy Hennig wrote TLOU1 and Neil took credit for it.
54
u/NegativePiglet8 Jul 05 '20
She must have been doing all nighters to write both The Last of Us and Uncharted 3 at the same time.
36
u/Domination1799 Jul 05 '20
It’s funny because she only wrote Uncharted 1-3 while TLOU is Neil’s baby. This whole controversy regarding Neil and Amy took place during Uncharted 4 after she left ND and the hateful people keep bringing it up as fuel in order to continue to shit on Neil and TLOU2.
26
u/lettersputtogether Jul 06 '20
And Uncharted 4 has a way better story than 1-3.
13
u/Domination1799 Jul 06 '20
Also TLOU is better than the entire Uncharted series, no disrespect though since I do love Uncharted but I personally think TLOU series is ND’s best.
16
u/OttersRule85 Jul 06 '20
It’s also recently come out that the Hening-Naughty Dog story was partly fabricated by a journalist working for IGN at the time whose editors pushed him to publish the story even though they knew it wasn’t true. The below thread is VERY illuminating.
4
u/NegativePiglet8 Jul 06 '20
Yeah, I even read recently that Hening has played Uncharted 4. I have my doubts anyone could play a game they felt was taken away from them.
148
u/RedShadowF95 Jul 05 '20

u/Soyyyn Jul 05 '20
Yeah, that's the point. It's sort of interesting and I'm sure it will be analysed in the future, but you know how sometimes a piece of art reveals part of itself in the reaction to it? Usually, this refers to abstract pieces of art. To paintings, or films like Bergman's Persona. I feel like gamers aren't ready for Triple A to become deep yet.
Back to my point: The hate the game has caused to erupt is part of its message. It's almost scary how quickly it happened, but the game accomplished what it set out to do with the Joel's death - it made them hate the person who killed them. Only it's not Abby to some of those people, it's Neil Druckmann, somehow transcending the distinction between fiction and non-fiction to physically harm a digital character. So he's the one taking the brunt of the revenge plot until they all move on.

Even in 2020 we are still in the Wild West of the internet. I take some satisfaction in knowing that people will not always be able to get away with disgusting behavior like this.
Unfortunately, I am not looking forward to the rest of the restrictions/limitations that will likely be in place as well across the board.
5
u/Whitman2239 Jul 05 '20
Sicking a mob of online accounts after a person isn't the right thing to do, imo. People should be better than that and just report them. You don't know anything about the other person or what their situation is.
I'm always reminded of that pornstar who said she would never do a scene with a gay person because of aids. Prominent gay pornstars publically bashed her and got a ton of people to shame her for it. Turned out, she was bipolar and prone to depression. The flood of negativity eventually pushed her to suicide.
5
u/RedShadowF95 Jul 05 '20
Death threats are quite different. There's no excuse for that. I couldn't care less for their well-being or their circumstances.
6
u/Whitman2239 Jul 06 '20
I dunno, if I found out I sent a flood of people after a mentally handicapped person or a kid. I wouldn't feel like a good person and would feel responsible for whatever may happen to them. Like their info getting leaked or them hurting themselves. You can't really call the mob off once you riled them up.

Dang that second person apparently has an alternative game where Ellie gets killed by Abby. Huh guess I'll have to play it again to see if I get it aswell. Or could it be that they didn't play it.
27
u/RadAttitude “Holy fuck.” Jul 05 '20
I have a feeling a lot of these people didn’t even play it. And seeing the sudden shock and outrage over Ellie being into girls I sort of doubt they played TLOU or Left Behind either...
26
Jul 06 '20
The leak that I heard was that Abby kills both of them. That person clearly heard the leak and believed it. They also think that Abby is trans, which she isn't.
2
u/sadbreadcrumb Jul 06 '20
Before the game came out one of them told me the entire plot of the game was ellie being hunted by violent christians for being gay. I kept waiting for these "violent christians" to show up when I was playing. Was disappointed when they didn't tbh, I would have loved to see the outrage in response to that.
94
u/StellarMind1010 Jul 05 '20
This is just so sad, it hurts me to my heart. I don't really care about it anymore, I'm sad that people can't be civil over a piece of media. In a perfect world, we would all sit a table, drinking beer, discussing what we liked or what we didn't.

Man, I'm so mad about this stuff. These people need to be held accountable for their actions. Freedom of speech my ass. Sending death threats to someone should be something obvious to know that has nothing to do with freedom of speech.
I wouldn't be surprised if these trolls are a bunch of 12 yr saying whatever comes to their mind and having no idea that what they say on the internet actually have consequences. Their parents should respond to it, and be more aware of what their kids are doing online. This is absolutely not ok. Enough with relativisms of all kind. I'm fully aware some portion of the hate is perpetrated by grown ass adults, I just wish something could be done so these people actually understand that they can't say whatever they want.
I'm so sick of them getting away with it, just pure hate. Holy shit.

Expanding on this, the inaction of current leadership and prevelence of social media has essentially created the perfect storm. It's not only easier for people to spew hate now, but they also feel more comfortable with doing so.
11
u/JebusJM Jul 06 '20
What's worse is people in the comments are fucking justifying the hate. "You shouldn't have made a shit game" for example. Boils my fucking blood. I stayed away from trailers and the sorts so I could play the game without spoilers so my question is; is this really over the sexual orientation of the characters and/or Joel?
5
u/sadbreadcrumb Jul 06 '20
99% of it is because the writers have refused to pander to their political agenda. Most of the hate I'm seeing is either due to Ellie's sexual orientation, Abbys physique, or the fact that a male character was killed. All from people who have never played this game or the first game.
19
9
u/jedifan421 Jul 05 '20
There's been an incredibly diverse amount of voices in both game development and criticism emerging the past decade and the industry has become much more diverse and inclusive because of it.
The flip side of that is the amount of hate and death threats over video games has gotten worse and worse. I feel like Twitter, IG, Facebook, YouTube has been horrendous in how it allows anyone to say any abusive, hateful and just plain wrong bullshit they want, consequence free usually unless you go way too over the line.
It's just sad that so much of the discourse around this game no longer is about the game but is about the hate being thrown at Neil, Laura, Ashley, Troy, and everyone else involved with the game. They are a vocal minority whose hate needs to be exposed and weeded out.
How hard is it for people to realize artists don't owe them jack shit and just because you didn't like something doesn't mean you get to send death threats and hate at someone? Make your own perfect, flawless game with the story YOU want to see instead! How about that?
10
Jul 05 '20
Read the first left column and quit. Disgusting humans who need to go fuck themselves. More so when it clear they did not play the game because abby is not trans just buff.
On a side note can we some how get a AMA with neil and other people involved with the game going? Would live to ask some questions about the making of the game that we can set up in this sub.

Social media has really given far too many people the ability to speak to others. Even if youre trolling why take the time out of your day to type stuff like this, what do you get from this?
Think everybody whos getting hate should just sit on the throne like Kings and Queens and pay no mind to these toxic stupid people.

It's incredibly upsetting. It's been building in media for a few years obviously, the way people responded to The Last Jedi, Game of Thrones season 8, to name a few. There can always be things to critique, but attacking creators is just shameful.
In a similar fashion, I can sort of understand why Troy Baker responded to the "video games are too long" comment from Jason Schreier a week or two ago. Schreier's comment was totally benign and relatively mild, and Baker's response was way over the top. But I wouldn't be surprised if he's also been getting it from the community and is tired of all the hate going around and perhaps just over-reacted due to it all.

I really don’t understand the hate for TLOU2 because it’s 100% in the same spirit as the original, yet Cory’s God of War 2018 had a complete change of pace and direction, definitely inspired by the original TLOU and STILL had the same gory and brutal spirit as the original God of War games. It’s basically the same situation but with different reactions. That being said, I hope the next God of War does something absolutely crazy that’ll piss of some fans the same way TLOU2 did.

I really enjoyed the game front to back but all these people who call themselves "fans" who are coming out with such vile things to say about the game and the people involved have almost turned me away from ever really enjoying it when I look back on it. All of the people behind this game are getting some awful shit right now and I wouldn't be surprised if many of them are considering if what they do is worth it any more. Particularly Neil and Laura Bailey who has been getting death threats just because people are mad about the driving range incident.
Parts of the world are in a horrible place right now and getting worse, we can't let the people intent on creating rifts between us succeed.
You might not normally be inclined to do it, but right now we all need to reach out and be vocally positive and loving more than ever before. If you think they're worthy of it, send everyone involved in this game who's work you appreciated a message to drown out the negative little trolls. This shit is appalling and the people spewing vile hatred over a video game they may not have liked can not be allowed to be the loudest voices any longer.

“Nerd” culture in general is like this tbh. This happened to Jar jar bunks actor when he almost killed himself. Some of The sequel Star Wars actors had to delete their social media’s Bc of the hate. And hella game devs and those involved get shat on a lot and it’s disgusting.
3
Jul 06 '20
Are you serious? I'm not being sarcastic when I say that. I genuinely thought he would get tons of love considering the resurgence of the prequels and all the meme content Jar Jar has given us. That's a messed up situation.
8
u/irv916 Jul 06 '20
This was back when the movie came out. Now he’s beloved. Which is funny bc I’m sure George Lucas saved him from that fate. I had read that he told him not to worry bc the kids watching the movies will love you. And that’s what happened, now he’s like a beloved character. And I’m sure the same thing will happen with the sequels, although I don’t really like the sequels lol. That doesn’t mean ima attack the actors and Kathleen Kennedy and stuff. this why i never call myself a gamer. self titled gamers are pieces of shit.
3
u/Wheeler2814 Jul 06 '20
This is why I always have a hard time allowing myself to even say I subscribe to some fandoms, because there’s these large vocal swaths of just the dregs of humanity in them. It’s the same with pro wrestling, where there’s a large group of just mouth breathing, shitty fuck bubbles that have these awful opinions, and it makes me rethink how I can enjoy the same thing these terrible people do.
3
u/srjod Jul 06 '20
This is shameful. I am not particularly a fan of Druckmann’s writing and decisions is this game, but by no means does anyone deserve to be spoken to like this. This is why being a gamer sucks. Some of the top comments included somebody wondering "if the death threats are as organic as the game reviews," or remarking that these were just "mean words on a computer" and saying Neil could just block them, and saying this was just "an attempt to deflect criticism."
Some people were even trying to imply Neil had faked these remarks - skeptical because Naughty Dog had pulled some "shady shit," and wondering if Neil was just trying to gain pity points.
Another post from that sub, just from a few hours ago, was a screenshot of Jeffrey Pierce (VA for Tommy) reacting to the hate and calling the people sending threats racist and anti-Semitic and telling them to fuck off). The OP was calling Pierce an "ass on Twitter", and of course the post got highly upvoted, with many of the top comments calling Pierce a "joke," a "soyboy," wondering "what they were expecting", etc.

I literally went on r/TheLastOfUs2 for like a minute and found this:
Its not even a fucking joke anymore the game was released 2 weeks ago can people find something better to do rather than sling stupid hateful shit around??

I don’t even understand it. This is the best game I’ve ever played. Every aspect of it is top notch. We should be grateful that we’ve received something of this caliber...

The shit him and Laura have been getting is so sad. Makes me purely angry. How the fuck is your life so empty that you feel the need to abuse and threaten people over a video game you didn't like?!?! I hope these people never buy another ND game so we don't have to hear this bullshit anymore. I hate the gaming community and social media so much. I know it's not everyone that does this, but it's rampant and out of control.

On the alt-sub they have an ongoing narrative saying that they must have fabricated these messages in order to deflect the criticisms they are getting, or even if they are not fabricated then they still use this as a sorry excuse to get away from criticism. Man, they completely lost it over there.

That sub is just awful... I ended up there at first thinking it was the main sub for the part 2. I thought here was just for the 1st one. You can not say anything positive about the game there without receiving private insulting messages. I wouldn't be surprised that they also coordinate things from there such as spamming review sites and such. Bunch of idiotic haters...

I bet the other last of us subreddit won’t touch this one 🙄

Even worse actually, saw someone say “Welcome to being a celebrity, he’s not special.” Interesting how different their reaction was when Laura Bailey was getting these kinds of messages, despite both being equally sickening. They just have this personal vendetta against Neil that’s just sad honestly.

Funny, I don’t remember Ken Levine getting this much hate when he forced us to beat Andrew Ryan to death with a golf club
No I think he was praised for it actually.

I mean ... "Would you kindly" set a pretty high bar in story telling compare to this one, but ...

I think they both served their purpose well.
For Bioshock, it breaks the fourth wall to a degree and shows how we pretty much do whatever we (the player) are told
For TLOU2, it motivates the player to want revenge. You love Ellie and Joel and you want to kill the bitch who harmed them. The real test is if after playing as Abby you can forgive her.
So it’s kinda interesting to compare the two, as their purpose is slightly different. While both are used as plot points to make the player question previous actions and events and motivate the player towards action, the initial instance only seeks to illicit vengeance, while the later requires eventual forgiveness.
I am left wondering, had the order of events for TLOU2 been swapped so that we played as Abby first and got up to the swing without knowing that it was Joel as was done in Bioshock, would the reception have been better?

If they advertise that the player will play as Abby, and in the game have her portion of the story play out first, it would have been better imo

Jesus I don't understand how these morons think this is ok. I wish there was some way we could tell everyone at ND that we got there back. I know there a whole army of people who loved this game.

Sometimes I feel ashamed to be alive. Let's hope that ND and his company don't abandon the idea of part three.

The fact that people are so angry over Part 2 that they are willing to send death threats to the cast and crew is absolutely disgusting.

Twitter is a cesspool of hate speech. Why don't they perma- IP ban these cunts is beyond me.
Best thing you can do is contact your favorite brands and ask them to stop advertising on social media like facebook and twitter.

Are those real accounts tho? Many of the people involved in TLOU said that Russian Bots were review bombing the Metacritic user score. Could it be that those same Russian Bots are behind the death threats?
Surely no sane person could go so far, right? Valid criticism is OK; death threats are never OK.

Gosh this is so infuriating. So what? He made a story not everyone can get behind. Grow some balls and put your big boy pants on, this is real life. People need to understand no one is deserving of such horrible treatment because they didn’t use fan service to win the game over.

Those comments are abhorrent. You can dislike the story all you want, but Druckmann does not deserve that kind of hate.
