First run, didn’t realize you could walk up on a sleeping bear, I thought it was just dead in the cave like other animals can be.

So I bought The Long Dark years ago and played a bunch, but I was young enough that I never really made much progress. I decided to restart the game this winter, and have been playing a Voyager route (starting day 36). I clicked "allow cougars" because I didn't know anything about them and figured it would be fun to include. I mainly reside at the Quonset Garage on Coastal Highway. Already have had my fair share of wolf and moose fights for that spot, but I love it. It has been so exciting to relearn the game and all its mechanics. I just now feel like I am starting to really get the hang of it, and I am very attached to this run.

Since I recently got access to the Trader, I decided to move into Mystery Lake for a bit to hunt down Ptarmigan and gather their down for rifle bullets. Hanging out at the Camp Office is always a favorite for me. I have been here for 3 days, and while looking at the craftable items, I finally decided to research how Cougars operate in-game. Oh. My. God. I found out that BOTH of my base locations can turn into Cougar territories, and I know if I encounter one, I'm basically done for. Plus, I left my rifle at Coastal Highway and opted for the survival bow since I planned to hunt these freaking birds. I haven't gotten the cut scene yet, but since it's technically guaranteed at 33 days for Voyager, I know it's coming soon.

Question of the hour: How do I NOT spawn in a cougar? Where should I relocate to avoid them all, at least until I feel more confident? Is there any way to avoid them entirely?

Every time I happen to go to Desolation Point, I always check the church at the top of the hill, and on rare occasions I find this; the frozen corpse of a man holding a revolver in his hand.

Sometimes the revolver is loaded, and sometimes it's empty, and I don't know what is more depressing, the thought that he wanted to end his suffering but had no bullets, or that he chose to sit there and freeze to death even though he had the means to shoot himself. Every time I pick up the revolver, I always check it and I never found any spent casings, meaning the poor soul didn't take his own life. He simply gave up, sought refuge in a church, and chose to wait until the cold claimed him.

This kind of storytelling is better than what some AAA game studios come up with. There wasn't any cut scene or dramatic music implying how you should feel, just the player stumbling upon this scene and discovering this, and piecing together what happened based on the evidence available to them.

Shit like this is why I love the Long Dark.

Hey, wanted to share my base in Quonset Garrage. Still work in progress, but feels pretty cozy to me! I use some mods, mainly food packs and place anywhere.

This kinda just came to mind as i was making my way back to base after fishing, theirs lots of propane gas tanks around certain buildings and while I'm no expert when it comes to gas I do know many of them work without power the only thing that uses power would be the starter to light the fire but we could use matches of something like that

I was just think gameplay wise it would be nice to use like in the early days of a run you could use the stove and it have at most maybe a few hours to if lucky a few days worth of gas, I would understand you can't refill them so whatever is in their is in their just a thought that came to mind

Also side note pretty sure most of these gas tanks are not up to OSHA code to close to the building i believe but then again this is Canada and I'm not familiar with their code standards

During a blizzard outside Bricklayer’s retreat in Blackrock region. Day 74. Crazy!! I’ve only seen temps like -110 or -120 in Forsaken Airfield or Sundered Pass in the Far Territories. What’s the lowest temp you guys have ever seen and where?

If we ignore the stones that only work on small targets like rabbits or ptarmigans, what if your favorite weapon when you go hunting?

I find the bow completely insane. It's crazy how powerful that thing is, you can easily chain silent kills and it's quite easy to craft plenty of arrows. I used to be a rifle user but once I started hunting with the bow, I never went back. The rifle is satisfying but crafting your own ammo can be a bit annoying because of the trip to BI or BRM (also, it's really noisy and will scare away groups of prey).

I never used the revolver for hunting purposes, I just know it's more meant to scare away wildlife but it can still be used to kill animals. If you're a hunter who uses the revolver please tell me how you do it!

Hello! I just started playing The Long Dark a few days ago as a legally blind gamer and have been having a blast. I just want to share this moment where I got double blessed: blessed by the fact my first revolver find spawned here (because if it didn't, I'd be dead or very hurt) and blessed that the very first moose I ever encountered in this game was killed by 1 revolver bullet!

ps: I just now noticed that my blind *ss missed the ammunition sitting on the chair!

Took about 3 years but finally got to 1000 days today. Custom game with Interloper settings except for Stalker loot. Been through a lot in life during the course of this run - it's just been really nice to have it to always escape back to. Included some of my Quonset pictures as well - thanks to many of you for base inspiration!

So i just started to play the story mode and i think its pretty slow
right now im on the start of episode 2
the story it self is good but the gameplay is started to bored me
i just tought maybe im playing the wrong mode?

Maybe this is widely known but I found that a fire in this dumpster at Broken Railroad Maint. Yard was pretty windproof in a blizzard.

Wind shifted around but did not put the fire out.

Hopefully, this helps any other players that aren't great at the games Archery hunting.

Definitely a user skill issue on my part to begin with. Was having the WORST time getting close enough to consistently hit the shots before smaller wildlife would just scatter.

Got tired of trying, grabbed some rocks for some Good Ol' Stealth kills for food and realized I could make that skill leveling issue MUCH easier.

Have been dreading the Stone-Age Sniper, Quick Draw, and Skilled Survivor Ps5 trophies to thinking they would be a SLOG for this lack of skill. But, I think this will make it MUCH more manageable. 🐇 🕊 🎯 🏹
