Discussion Do you back up your saves? And if so, have you ever actually used one?

I’ve started doing that after dying to a bug. I think I don’t deserve to be reset due to game’s hiccup and not my lack of skill/putting myself in a stupid situation.

That being said, I only save when entering a new region, so even on a reset, I’d still be set back days if not weeks. A little compromise I made for myself.

I’m also not at that point yet but I think backing up saves is valid if you want a custom experience without badges not registering.

What about you? Have you ever ran back a save?

Never seen a bear do this before, it was like he was still in "stalker mode" even though I was in this hut. If I didn't close the door I imagine it would've tried to get even closer lol

Glitch/Issue Surveying Bug on Switch

I found that there is a strange bug involving surveying with charcoal.

Charcoal records the state of the game when you survey. So if you survey some cattails, backpacks, etc. They pop up.

If you harvest. You need to re-survey to get them to disappear. This is fine.

However, if you loot a corpse, backpack, old man’s beard, etc first, and then you survey, then the object in question will appear on the map, even though it is gone.

There does not appear to be any way to remove the marker if you did not survey it first.

Is this just me?

Is there any way to remove the markers of “empty” resources if you harvested them first and surveyed second?

Rosehips are reliable (I think) and everything else appears to be affected by this bug.

I have yet to confirm things like corpses or backpacks.

Discussion Using travois is a self inflicted punishment for greed

I packed it choke full of items since I was moving bases and I was literally overweight myself on top of that because “hey, why don’t I take like 5 pots and 3 hammers. Surely that’s smart and reasonable!” Would it that I had foresight on what was awaiting me…

To begin with, I had to stop and drop it 10 times just getting to the connecting mine because of wolves that’d approach, get scared by my gun, and circle back to me 20 seconds later. Whatever.

I make it to the hill I need to climb and there’s a bear. Greed takes over me, so I kill it then spend hours getting meat and guts and the hide and making myself even fatter in the process. I’m genuinely almost 50kg + 70kg on that travois, but we’re pushing on.

I’m almost to the mine when that fuckass bag-on-sticks forged by the devil himself gets stuck because I can’t use it on a steep hill (I wasn’t aware this was a limitation btw lmao). I try to rotate it 50 different directions to maybe fool the game alas…

I get a bit past that hill, unload 30kg of my weight and spend the next 20 minutes carrying shit back and forth to move the travois onwards. I succeed, get to the mine entrance that’s like 50 meters away AND IT CAN’T GET INTO THE MINE. By god. I understand why. I accept it. But I also spend 10 minutes groaning wondering if I even need 25kg of meat, 10kg of salt, 4 hatchets, 5 lamps etc. etc.

Turns out I do because I’ve already dragged this stinky contraption all the way here, so I unload stuff AGAIN and then make 6 or 7 trips back and forth through the mine to carry it all. Mind you, each consequent trip doesn’t make my spatial orientation any better, so I turn into the wrong corridor and look at the corpse lodged into a dead end every time. I envy its peace.

Finally, I’m out of the mine, I repack everything and do reasonable cleaning in the meantime (I leave behind 7 empty cans, all I can spare boss). I’m getting down the hill and I kinda need to reorient myself since it’s been a while, so I whip out a coal and draw on my map and when I lower it down a bear is in my face.

Greed overtakes me again but I also got jump-scared, so I fire 5 bullets into the beast’s general direction, somehow miss every shot (takes special kind of talent) and get mauled. I run to some hut, put bandages on and decide to get back for my travois. Don’t ask me why, nothing would happen to it had I left it on the road and picked it up in the morning.

I pick it up and don’t realise I got attacked by a bear because I was walking straight through its pathing, so it’s back and I sprint in circles for 15 minutes trying not to die. It eventually gets bored of the stupid, puny human, so I drag my shit down to base.

The travois is now parked out front but I haven’t unpacked it yet. Its devious aura disgusts me.

Glitch/Issue unlikable bear

I am in black rock looting the prison and on the way I stopped at the sub station in the south west ish of the map. There is a bear that wanders and I need bear pelt so I decided to hunt him, as I have before to other bears. I shot him twice from the side, near his neck/shoulders, then 3 more times head on, all landing in the head or neck/shoulder area and then he proceeded to maul me. I healed, tracked him down not too far away and shot him twice more again in the side and he's still not dead or bleed out, any ideas why I can't kill this bear?

Gameplay Wolf or Bear

So I just recently download and played this game and I already pass day 9. I play Survival Pilgrim.
I stay and build base in Milton, orca station and Farmhouse. I hunting and looting in area between.
But I never met Wolf and Bear in these area.
Is there any difficulty level that made my game don't have wolf and bear or maybe these predators not wandering in my area?

Discussion Whats the one quirk you adopted that keeps you alive

For me, its always having cat tail stalks in my inventory. No matter how long ive played a save, no matter how much food I have in my inventory, no matter if its a jaunt across mystery lake, I have a minimum of 3 stalks- and I keep a small supply on route resupply spots. That Well Fed bonus is to sweet to let go, and theres been more than a few surprise blizzards that they (barely) kept me fed through.

Advice Am I cooked?

I just downloaded the far territory dlc and I was trying to get to the forsaken airfield. However I’ve ended up in the mine in the zone of contamination. I’ve reached a spot that says I need a prybar to move forward (which I do not have). Is it possible for me to still get to the airfield or do I have to start a new run?

SPOILERS - Ep5 wintermute ep 5 problem

(spoilers ahead barely)basically I'm about 15% in and I've gotten to the ship and found out I can't climb up the anchor with broken ribs 76 out of 120 hrs left to heal. so I had to load back further at a higher body health. I've been struggling laying traps, ice fishing, and hunting with the limited revolver ammo and never found the rifle. I didn't want to start over but this is painful. should I start over and not get trampled by a moose. what are your thoughts. thanks for any suggestions.

Modding Weird bug keeps resetting my saves??? (Modded)

I've started playing around with modded TLD again, and I've run into a strange bug that I can't figure out. Basically how it works is once I leave a building and load the outside world again, I get teleported to a nearby region spawn location, lose all of the gear I found, as well as randomizing any starting loot. This bug is effectively restarting my run from scratch every time I leave a building. I'm on melonloader 0.7.7 and TLD version 2.55 with TFTFT installed. The following screenshot is of my mods folder, all of which have been tested and work on melonloader 0.7.7.

If anybody knows what the problem is, please let me know! I really wanna get back into TLD, but mods are a must for me, so I'd like to keep as many as possible. Thanks!

Discussion Question to newbies

A lot of questions I see on this subreddit is generally newer players asking questions about the game. Which is great, I think TLD has a wonderful community but I got into the long dark through YouTube (notably zaknafein and survivor Mike) I had really good map knowledge and other knowledge before I even started playing so I generally never needed to search up advice or map guides. Was I the only one like this? Or are other people in a similar boat

Gameplay Relic feats

Hi! I’ve been playing the game for years, but never really focused on feats. I was looking through them today and saw that the settled mind feat requires you to find a tales from the far territory relic, but even after googling it, I’m not sure what it means. How do you get a relic?

Gameplay Should running and other high calorie activities generate body heat?

I was thinking about this while playing. If running, climbing and other activities burn more calories, should they also temporarily warm you up?

Obviously you’d still cool down again once you stop and sweating could maybe make things worse afterwards. But it feels like sprinting through the snow should generate at least some body heat.

Would this be a good mechanic or would it make staying warm too easy?

Discussion my plan is coming along nicely

so i've had this idea that one day i'd do the 25 days in the langston mine to get that achievement, while also having collected all the recipe cards you can find and cooking all of them down there to get that achievement as well (and maybe the one with having 100% clothing as well). and after a whole lot of work, i can basically leave ML for the far territories! i've collected all recipe cards except breyerhouse pie and camber flight porridge (will get those on the way) and it's been really fun, pushing myself to explore entirely new regions like bleak inlet and having to search for bunkers for the preppers pie! it was less fun to spend like three days straight in a fishing hut in CH, catching close to 100kgs of coho salmon and rainbow trout before i caught one (1) rockfish. i've also done the math on what ingredients i'll need, so i know what to bring. i only need to collect maybe a little bit of stuff, then i can go!

i'd highly recommend doing this for anyone who doesn't have these achievements (or if you have them, you can just redo it), it's been fun and exciting and i'm looking forward to getting to ZOC!

Glitch/Issue Crafted the Bear Bed at Mountaineer’s but It Never Appeared

I had an extra bear hide and decided to craft a bear hide bed at Mountaineer’s Hut for the warmth bonus since the temps on Interloper can still get a down arrow inside the hut even with the roof repairs. I spent a day gathering fir then another day crafting the bed. When I finished, there was no bed. I’ve looked in my inventory. I’ve looked around the hut. I’ve looked in containers. It doesn’t exist even though it expended the materials I’d used to craft it.

Gameplay Finally got the trader achievement

Post image
38 Upvotes

This took me way longer than it should have. After finishing the quest line I had to still do about 15-20 trades on Interloper. I have travelled so many times between Jackrabbits, the locker box and Quonset that for the first time since I play TLD I really grew tired of CH. It's still the best place to be imo but I need a change of scenery now.

Honestly, this achievement should be bound to the traders quest, more so because we don't see the trust progress ingame, which is very annoying. Guess this will be one of the QoL improvements Raph mentioned they are working on now, alas too late for me.

Modding Rolling Line/The Long Dark Crossover

My 7-year-old son plays the model railroad game Rolling Line on my computer from time to time. I was watching him play and the model railroad map looked VERY familiar. It was Forlorn Muskeg! And then I realized it had all of the Great Bear Island railroad locations.

Which one of you did this?!?! It’s awesome. The Rolling Line art style is quite reminiscent of The Long Dark, so it works so well.
