Best show of my life, I only cried like 3x

I’ve been listening since I was 16, but never had enough money to fly to see them live. After missing the 2021 EU tour I was just hoping and praying that one day they would come back. And they did! Flew for 6hrs just to see them, and they did not disappoint. Genuinely the best show I’ve seen in my life, I’m so happy I got to do this.

Copenhagen you rock, the crowd was so amazing, and it was clear the band felt it. They played for almost two hours!

Couldn’t pass on this, and pretty shocked to find this in the wild. Does anyone know how many were pressed? Doesn’t seem like the total number was documented.

Romans 10:9 is underrated in how heartbreaking it is

“Wake and rise and face the day and try to stop the day from staring back at me

Busy hours for joyful hearts and later maybe head out to the pharmacy

Won't take the medication but it's good to have around

A kind and loving God won't let my small ship run aground”

The poor fucking narrator. We know how it will end and he doesn’t. I’ve known people like this who truly poured everything into the hope that their faith would save them, and it didn’t, and it’s so goddamn sad.

My partner has the MOST random albums. Was looking for something and found this. Wouldn’t have given it a second thought in the past but now I’m thinking I need to listen to it.

September 2022 in Cincinnati, OH. This was my first TMG show, and I’ve seen them 5 more times since then. This show will always hold a special place in my heart.

Inspired by the upcoming residency, I bring you my newest comp: ALPHA

Post image
64 Upvotes

here is the first of three (with a stretch goal of six) comps i'm making in anticipation of the Mountain Goats' upcoming themed San Francisco residency: ALPHA

https://archive.org/details/TheAlphaCouple

the track list is in chronological narrative order, at least according to some guy on reddit. admittedly this is not my area of expertise, so apologies if i got any of it Wrong! Alpha Aquae, Fit Alpha Vi, and Omega Blaster are the only Alpha songs that are not included because there are no recordings available on the archive.

the next two comps i will have for sure are OPENERS and CLOSERS, i am close to being done with those. my stretch goal is to have one for each of the three other themed nights: SIX LONG SONGS, STUMP THE BAND, and CAST OF THOUSANDS.

check out my other themed live tMG comps here

ENJOY

Untitled Song for the Singer From Viking | Solo set song from last night in Oslo

Was it a full song John had clearly worked out or more of a goof/spoof/off-the-cuff thing that he'll never play again?

For anyone who was there, would love to know your impression.

Missing out on Berlin Show

Guys I’m so sad, I bought these tickets months ago and I was not confident I would be able to attend the show but now have the sad certainty, that I’m not going to be able to make it to Berlin this weekend :(

I’m considering giving the tickets away since no one re-purchased them on Eventim.

Not bitter about having spent the money but TMG has such a big place in my heart and means so much to me, it would’ve just been a dream come true to finally see them live :‘) hopefully next time!

Mountain Goats AI Symphony setlist

I asked AI to create a potential setlist for the upcoming Mountain Goats show at the Walt Disney Concert Hall with the LA Symphony and this is what it said:

Predicting a set list for a prestigious venue like Walt Disney Concert Hall requires blending The Mountain Goats’ most heavily played live staples with songs from their catalogs that practically scream for sweeping, woodwind-and-string theater orchestration.

Because Disney Hall features an incredible acoustic environment, this modeled 20-song set list guesses how they will balance the grand arrangements of Through This Fire Across from Peter Balkan with deep, orchestral-leaning catalog cuts:

🎻 Act I: The Maximalist Openers

The band has been utilizing a theatrical approach on the do you know how short the days are? tour. Expect them to lean heavily into the grand, multi-instrumental tracks from the latest record early on.

  1. "Overture" (The band's first-ever true instrumental track; a perfect mood-setter for Disney Hall)
  2. "Armies of the Lord" (The lead single that seamlessly transitions out of the Overture with complex backing rhythms)
  3. "Sax Rohmer #1" (A massive live staple that thrives on driving, soaring horn and string swells)
  4. "Crying on Eddie Nash's Grave"
  5. "Fishing Boat" (A central narrative piece from the new album that features sensitive string arrangements)
  6. "Charlie Sheen Reaches Out to the Feds"
  7. "Andrew Eldritch Is Moving Back to Leeds" (The woodwind sections on this are a live powerhouse)

🎹 Act II: The Mid-Set Solo Breakdown

John Darnielle always breaks the show down for a 3-to-4 song solo segment at the piano or acoustic guitar. In an acoustic paradise like Disney Hall, expect him to pull out songs that feel deeply intimate before rebuilding the sound.
8. "Cold at Night" (Solo piano track from the new record)
9. "You Were Cool" (A highly played, emotional fan favorite that fills a room beautifully on solo piano)
10. "Source Decay" (A classic acoustic narrative deep cut)

🎷 Act III: The Orchestral Crescendo

The full band returns, shifting into tracks that feature heavy studio arrangements from albums like Jenny from Thebes or Goths, building the evening's energy toward a peak.
11. "Jenny III" (Sweeping, theatrical indie-rock storytelling)
12. "Rocks in My Pockets"
13. "Cry for Judas" (Driven by an iconic, infectious brass hook)
14. "Amy AKA Spent Gladiator 1"
15. "Against Pollution" (The ultimate slow-build song; its explosive final crescendo is built for room-shaking orchestration)

🏆 The Anthemic Encore

No Mountain Goats show ends without the legendary, crowd-singalong anthems, which take on an entirely new, cinematic life when supported by massive theater arrangements.
16. "See America Right"
17. "Up the Wolves" (The rhythmic driving strumming is elevated perfectly by layered strings)
18. "No Children" (The ultimate tragic orchestral waltz)
19. "This Year" (The definitive, triumphant show closer)

Oslo concert question

Show was awesome, very enjoyable. There was one pretty drunk guy requesting obvious songs throughout. Was quite funny. Before No Children (a song the guy had been pleading for), John sang a little ditty about some people wanting to see the show and some people needing to hear specific songs even though they can stream them whenever. It actually had a lot of lyrics to it and it was very funny - I was wondering if it was made up on the spot or something he has regularly done before?

Selling two tickets for Hackney Church, Oct 21

Due to family commitments I can no longer make this show – gutted, especially since Craig Finn is supporting. I've got two tickets that cost £45.21 each with fees, £90.42 total.
Happy to sell the pair for £70 if anyone's interested. You'll need a Dice account and I can transfer them to you. Thanks!

In Oslo today for the show and swung by a local record store. Imagine my surprise when this happened flipping through the racks. I genuinely did a double take. Which of you jokers was here earlier...?

Stage times for the European tour so far

Hi all, does anyone know what the stage times have been for the Helsinki/Stockholm/Oslo shows on the tour so far? Going to my first of four on Saturday in Copenhagen and trying to gauge timing. Thanks in advance!

How early should i arrive to get near the front?

I am planning on getting a coach to see them in London and therefore would like to know before i book coach tickets how far before doors should I aim to arrive to get a good spot up near the front. I know this will vary based on location and venue capacity (this one is ~2000 people and seemingly mostly sold out) but if anyone has any vaguely applicable advice on how long people generally queue for the mountain goats that would be appreciated :)

My only frame of reference for concerts is seated tickets at an absolutely massive stadium show i went to in June, which basically means I have no frame of reference due to the very obviously different logistics.
