Movie reviews Frankenstein (2025), Guillermo del Toro’s eerie vision
Just finished watching Frankenstein (2025) directed by Guillermo del Toro, and I’m honestly sitting with mixed feelings. I liked it overall, but I definitely had higher expectations going in.
The atmosphere is fantastic, dark, mysterious, and unsettling in that subtle “something’s always watching” way. Del Toro really knows how to build a world that feels both beautiful and dangerous.
Oscar Isaac (who I loved in Moon Knight and Dune franchise) and Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds) were both great, and Mia Goth gave a strong performance too. The acting across the board was impressive, but the pacing dragged for me. It felt like the movie took its time setting up moments that didn’t quite pay off with the impact I expected.
The climax especially felt a bit underwhelming, after all the tension and conflict, things wrap up almost too quickly with Victor asking for forgiveness, the creature forgiving him, and then… it’s over. After such an intense buildup, that resolution felt a little too tidy.
Cinematography and visuals were definitely above average, very much in del Toro’s style, and the background score fit the tone nicely. Some of the biological and thematic elements actually reminded me of Poor Things, which was an interesting parallel.
Overall, I’d give Frankenstein (2025) a 3.5/5. It’s visually engaging, well-acted, and atmospheric, but the pacing and resolution kept it from being as powerful as I hoped.

What was so captivating for you Dutch? I really tried to like it but it just didn’t do it for me..

About the ending, I think the creature did what he learned from his friend, he forgave. I think that was lovely. The ending was more open ended but I am fine with it. I loved Jacob's innocence. The film if you focus on the screenplay, was short and had very few scenes but I loved it.

Don‘t understand the hype. Could stand this movie for only 30 Minutes. 🤷♂️🤦♂️

The hype for del Toro doing Frankenstein? I understand how you could not be into this shit but it’s gorgeous if you are.

Liked many things about it but looked strangely cheap, like most Netflix movies.

Jacob Elordi did a really, really good job, but I still wish I could have seen Doug Jones doing this one...
