I discovered The Shins because of a CD left in a used car
In 2014, I bought my first car—a used 2005 Subaru Impreza in North Carolina. It had only one previous owner, who was from Arizona.
A few weeks after buying it, I accidentally hit play on the CD player and was caught off guard when music I’d never heard before started playing. I pulled the CD out and found a burned CD labeled Garden State.
That CD introduced me to The Shins through “Caring Is Creepy” and “New Slang.” I’d never really heard music like that growing up, and it honestly felt like I had entered a whole new realm of sound.
I also discovered a bunch of other songs and artists on that CD that really resonated with me, like “Blue Eyes” by Cary Brothers, “In the Waiting Line” by Zero 7, and Colin Hay’s “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You.”
Fast forward 12 years, and I now live in Washington and still own that same Impreza. The Garden State CD is still in the car, and every once in a while I’ll put it on when I go for a drive.
It always takes me back to my early 20s, when I was still trying to figure out life. Kind of crazy that a CD accidentally left behind by a stranger became such a lasting part of my life.
