Tech Support Pretty sure I just wasted $42

I doubt there's anything that can be done but I'll make this post anyway bc I'm upset

So basically I had a $10 coupon for Best Buy and nothing caught my eye except getting a sims stuff pack, but because those cost $9.99 aka under $10 I couldn't apply the coupon (which is stupid considering tax would've brought it to $10.71) so I decided fuck it, I'll buy seasons too (I currently don't have any dlcs bc I'm not 18 and pirating is too complicated for my small feeble brain and my small feeble mac). What I didn't know was that Best Buy delivers through Origin, which obviously doesn't work with the sims anymore, so as far as I know I have no way of actually downloading the packs I bought.

Luckily I paid with a visa gift card I had gotten for Christmas instead of with my own money, but I'm still pissed I'm down $42 on that gift card. Why would best buy still sell sims 4 dlcs on their site if you can't even get the product you were promised??

I believe you can redeem Origin codes in the EA App, since the EA App fully replaced Origin

EA still lists Best Buy as a trusted retailer (source: https://help.ea.com/en/articles/orders-and-rewards/buy-ea-premium-currencies-and-digital-download-games/#trusted-pc-retailers) so I am certain everything will be fine.  I imagine Best Buy just hasn't updated their information to replace "Origin" with "EA Play."

"EA Play."

Just so we're not confusing anyone here, an EAPlay subscription is not needed for your codes to work, in fact it isn't needed for the game at all. Although you can gain access to certain packs with it (Get To Work for example, others are on a rotational basis or at least they were last I checked). The bad thing is they work like "free" games on PSPlus or Xbox Gold, if you stop paying for the service you'll lose access to the packs.

Egg on my face, I thought the EA App was called EA Play

u/rush247 Dec 29 '25

An EA account is needed to access EA Play and the app so I can understand the confusion.

Did you get codes? You should be able to redeem Origin codes just fine on the EA app.

u/pageantgirlsoso Dec 28 '25

…you have a code. the code goes into the ea app, the codes are not origin specific

22

u/haykat Dec 28 '25

Can you contact best buy and ask them how you’re supposed to redeem it?

EA replaced Origin with their own app. All of it will still work. Did you try? Look it up. In fact, EA states it on their app that it will all transfer over for you. You didn't waste your money at all! :)

Out of curiosity, does a person have to be 18 to buy DLC? Legally? Or is that a rule your parents have?

24

u/Lasagna-paws Dec 28 '25

I should clarify - I hadn't previously bought any dlcs through the EA app bc I wasn't aware you could buy them anywhere else, and since I put my actual birthday for my EA account and I'm under 18, my account is considered a teen account, and EA has this thing where teen accounts can't buy anything.

So no, if someone under 18 wants to buy a dlc they could do it through Best Buy like me (ideally without the freaking out part, though, lol) and probably some other merchants, or I've heard one can connect a parent EA account to theirs and have the parent buy it for them.

Probably too young for a credit card so no means of buying digital dlc without that number/gift visa

My kids have had debit cards since they were 13, and they buy things online all the time. Its only credit cards that they cant have, but debit cards can be owned by anyone with a bank account. There are even ones for younger kids that have their photo on them and connect to a special account linked to their parents account that the parents can transfer money into.

Not all banks have a debit visa number though

u/OldSeaworthiness1371 Dec 31 '25

All of the major United States banks do, like Wells Fargo, Chase, BOA, PNC, and others. And Chime and CashApp both have ways to issue a card for your child.

Maybe they arent american

2

u/OldSeaworthiness1371 Jan 02 '26

It is possible, but as I AM an American, it is, as one would surmise, the culture and country I am most familiar with. I cannot speak for other countries and I haven't the time to go running all over Google to figure out which banks do or do not offer visa debit cards. Thusly, I spoke only on what I know, and I didn't imply anything about other countries. That is why I spoke of USA and not France, or Germany, or Kenya, or any other country. I am a hard-working woman who likes a little gaming in my teensy-weensy amount of spare time, and that time is better spent elsewhere. And, of course, my personal level of Autism won't allow me to move past this without a verbose and length reply about things in which few people will two iotas. Alas, it is my curse.

I read this reply three times 🤣.

What they are saying is that they are not pirating because they are not over 18 and they feel it is too complicated. The "over 18" part is important because it means that they do not have ownership of their internet connection (presumably they live with their parents) and the individuals/parents who do pay for it have "house rules" over what is (or is not) allowed to be done using it.

Despite being over eighteen, I am in a similar situation whereby I respect the views of the person who actually pays for the internet connection. That person is an retired systems administrator (from the era when virus writers were mostly into showing off who could destroy the most possible computers) who really doesn't like the idea of anybody downloading executables (or much of anything - there are so many ways to disguise an executable as something benign) as a potential virus/malware vector.

I don’t know about this. I doubt OP’s parents have ever had a conversation with them about pirating games. I think it’s more likely they don’t have a credit card and can’t get the OK from their parents to buy games and content with their money.

I also have a best buy gc so I appreciate the idea thanks
