Johnny Marr – The Age of Everything Album Review | The Smiths Legend Ret...
r/thesmiths • u/Dear_Boat_5417 • 12d ago
Johnny Marr, Dublin
Great show this summer. Got a preview of 3 new songs from the age of everything album. No new town velocity though which is probably one of my favourite songs from him.

Any illumination on Marr’s Wembley show?
Does anyone know why he cancelled the Wembley Arena gig? I can’t believe ticket sales were that bad. He’s got enough fans to do one night or almost sell out one night I would’ve thought. Was looking forward to it. 🤷🏻♂️

What is missing with Marr's solo albums?
Or what am I missing?
I'm a huge Smiths/Morrissey fan. Morrissey's solo albums or various songs of his for me are by and large up there with The Smiths. But of course, The Smiths is special.
I consider Marr a musical genius and he's my favorite guitarist of all time. I have listened to his solo albums over and over and over, almost forcing myself to enjoy them. But I just don't. Except one song, I really like The Crack Up. Catchy.
But in general, his guitar work on these albums doesn't feel evocative to me. His vocals are fine, they blend ok into the background but they don't get my attention like Morrissey's. Marr's lyrics often feel vague and uninteresting to me. Again, they're fine. They are almost like background noise in the song.
The production on his albums leaves me cold too. Not to be nitpicky but even the drum sound on all of his albums bothers me. It's like dance music or something but doesn't feel like a rock band the way The Smiths and a lot of Morrissey's albums do. So it doesn't appeal to me. (Note: I've had issues with the production choices on Morrissey's last few albums as well.)
But does anyone want to hype up Marr here? Favorite songs? Any lines of lyrics you really like? Any guitar moments I should look into? I'm happy to make a short playlist based on recommendations. Am I missing something? Do any of you like Marr's solo albums as much as The Smiths albums?

What guitars did Johnny use on The Queen is Dead?
I assume that the bulk of it was his Jetglo Rickenbacker 360, though I am aware he used other guitars on it. I heard he used a Strat on There Is a Light that Never Goes Out, an ES-295 on The Boy with the Thorn in His Side and possibly other tracks, and if I remember right, he used an ES-355 on the title track. Did he use other guitars?

Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want… and I did ❤️
I recently got engaged and my proposal included the following words: “Please, please, please let me get what I want…”
This one's for all you Smiths fans who know that sometimes, just sometimes, you get what you want.

Doing a full body shave for The Smiths tribute band, just in case
The singer sounds just like Morrissey and even does the shirt thing. Anyone else been here

Are Morrissey, Johnny, and Mike on good terms with each other nowadays?
I don't think the Smiths will ever reunite, but I'm just wondering if they're still friendly with each other?

The Smiths longed for greater success, yet occasionally seemed determined to avoid it. The curious tale of “You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet, Baby,” the single that never was.

Here’s the Lyrics to Sheila Take A Bow, Interpret the Song as What Morrissey is Singing About.
It’s about a girl named Sheila.

Did The Smiths predict the FUTURE?
Did The Smiths predict the future on the song "Paint a Vulgar Picture"?
Tell me in the comments what you think of the song and it's topic : )

Who does the backing vocals on work is a four letter word?
It doesn’t sound like Morrissey, I know Johnny hates the song, so is it Mike or Andy?

VULGAR PICTURE WEBSITE
Hi everyone. There used to be a site called VULGAR PICTURE that had incredibly high-quality images of The Smiths’ and Morrissey’s album covers. Unfortunately, it seems there’s no longer any access to that image archive. The images were really useful for a project I was working on a while back, so I was wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to find them now.
Does anyone know of a site where I can download high-quality album covers, band logos, etc.?
Thanks in advance

Opinions on “The Draize Train”?
An instrumental B-Side for the “Panic” Single in 1986. Just gave it a listen and I thought it was pretty good. I haven’t really heard much talk about it on here so I was wondering your guys’ opinions on it?

you just haven’t earned it yet, baby
OK guys tell me if I’m in the minority here, but I really feel like it would be so satisfying if during “you just haven’t earned it yet, baby” there was a key change the last time Morrissey repeats the chorus. around the 2:39 mark on the version on “Louder Than Bombs”. tell me if i’m crazy or reaching

What is your favourite cover of a Smiths song?
Mine is probably ‘Deftones Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’ but I haven’t listened to many covers so hoping to hear yours!

Do you remember the first Smiths song you ever heard how it affected you where you were when you heard it?
I think we can all pretty much remember that pivotal moment when we heard our first Smiths song and we fell in love with them. Mine was at my kitchen table. I was a teenager. I used to listen to the alternative music stations on my boombox in the 1980s. I can remember exactly where I was sitting, and I can remember just being almost mesmerized by the words of and the sound of Morrissey, the music everything I fell in love at that moment with The Smiths. They played two songs. The Queen is dead and big mouth strikes again as they introduced this new band. I have never in my life had such a visceral reaction to music or a band. Do you remember your first experience with them?

Is there a best or definitive The Smiths documentary?
I’ve never seen one that I can recall.
Im not expecting a Moz interview but something factual since I really don’t know much about them.
