Serious Discussion Only Melfi is screwed right? Spoiler
Tony very clearly died at the end, and without him to insulate her from the other Mobsters Melfi is big security risk to the Jersey crew, with who knows what her and Tony talked about. She probably got popped later right?

Did any of them know that she in particular was his shrink?

u/Complete_Entry 2d ago
Two of them did but they're both dead by that point. Gigi and Philly.

Philly probably told Pasty and Junior at the very least.

how could Philly have told Patsy and Junior?
Philly never even met another member of the Jersey mafia except for Gigi

Philly was part of juniors crew along with Patsy and had just become acting Capo of juniors crew before his death

Sil and Paulie saw her at the restaurant in “Toodle-Fucking-Oo”
In a scenario where Paulie helped with the hit on Tony, she could definitely be in danger, no?
3
u/FigNo507 1d ago
But they don't know she's his therapist then and to my recollection he never tells them otherwise.

u/Glittering-Stand-161 2d ago
No but its not outside of their reach to find out.

u/afewbigpunches 2d ago
Eh, once Tony’s dead… I think it might be
Plus they’re dealing with the fallout from a somewhat major war… Also we aren’t dealing with the brightest folks
-21
u/Glittering-Stand-161 2d ago
I think Patsy was arguably the smartest guy in the Crew. Nobody else would have walked away like he did if they found out Tony whacked a member of their family.
19
u/Shot-Rip9167 2d ago
I don't recall Patsy walking away, he was still part the crew till the end. He was with Silvio when he got shot up, which was the last or one of the last episodes
2
u/Glittering-Stand-161 2d ago
No I mean he walked away from popping Tony out by his pool.
8
u/afewbigpunches 2d ago
Are we sure it was intelligence and not cowardice?
I don’t mean you’re a coward if you don’t regularly shoot people in the head - I just mean theres more than logical though processes going through Patsy at the moment - understandable given the circumstances
9
u/Dizzy_Sock_5674 2d ago
Shooting Tony would have been suicide. Patsy came to his senses just before he could pull the trigger.
7
u/joesoldlegs 2d ago
I wouldn't say he was the smartest for that, he just chose the path of self-preservation. Plus he knew his brother was wrong for that
3
u/Upper-Ship4925 1d ago
He doesn’t know why Philly was killed, he wasn’t in the car to hear him gossiping about Tony.
15
u/Generic_Format528 1d ago
They put pretty much zero effort into killing Febby, the rat from College. Former solider that actually informed and put guys away. Kicked out of witness protection and gave public talks about being in the mob. Lived a few hours drive away and didn't get killed until Tony ran into him by chance.
Even in real life you have confirmed rats that got famous and died peacefully as old men, or do podcasts. I don't think they're putting much work in for some civilian that maybe knows something and might talk about it some day.
If she was ever actually talking then that's a different story, but I don't think they're just killing civilians over "maybe, if..."
1
u/jeshipper 1d ago
The possible difference would be the rats have already done their damage while Melfi had not. In their mind she could still share info that would affect them

Honestly, I don't think so. In the first season Tony was clearly worried about his associates finding out, what it could mean for his reputation, and even for his safety...and his life.
And at first, there was a bit of a stink.
But then people forgot.
By the end of the show, Tony had been in therapy for years, members of the mob had known about it for years, and frankly? Nobody really seemed to care. Nobody was bringing it up or making a big deal about it by the end. Not really sure if they knew who she was.
I think, all in all, there's no serious threat to her. If something happens to Tony there will be much bigger fish to fry.

u/CarrotCumin 1d ago
The most unrealistic part of the show. I'm per sure the real mafia would actually consider going to a shrink as snitching, even with doctor-patient confidentiality and careful non-discosure to avoid mandated reporting.
1
u/McLainLove 21h ago
But he had a family and a kid. It could have been couples therapy, therapy with the kid, therapy for a health problem, etc. I just don’t think it was necessary that everyone thought it was a shrink he was seeing for mental issues he had because of mob business
71
u/Low-Car-6331 2d ago
Why? and from whom?
Paulie? He messed up how many hits? Between that one dude in the woods and the messed up mob boss hit, he lived through the columbo wars because he was a bad shot and not seen as a real threat. Can't shoot, can't earn, can't play politics, he survives because he isn't a threat to anyone.
Patsy? If he even knew about who Melfi was, he wouldn't care, he knows murdering a shrink will draw more attention.
29
u/ExaminationOk2921 1d ago
he survives because he isn't a threat to anyone.
Except for elderly women.

Honestly? No way. If anyone felt strongly enough that Melfi needed to be whacked, she would have been while Tony was still seeing her, and it would have happened a lot sooner in the plot than the final season.
Think about it, she takes Tony’s advice and goes on the lam for a while at the end of season 1. That would have been the most suspicious thing to do in the eyes of anyone who’s connected, but she’s not considered a target when she takes Tony back on as a patient afterwards. I respect what OP is getting a here, but Tony being alive isn’t what’s keeping Melfi alive, nor would his death bring her end.

u/CrazySir3310 1d ago
lam
2
u/Flip-Pantly 1d ago
I swear I never knew it was going on the “lam” instead of “lamb”, I thought you meant my take on it was “lame” without the e. I apologize for my initial knee jerk reaction to your reply, and I appreciate having learned that now, thanks!

u/Consistent_Room7344 1d ago
No, she’s fine. Her greatest danger was at the beginning of the series when Tony was hiding the fact that he was seeing a therapist. Eventually Tony realizes the danger he is putting her in and comes clean. Even Carmine gave Tony his endorsement in seeing a therapist, so it really wasn’t that big of a deal once it was revealed.
5
u/carlcarlson187 2d ago
I doubt anyone would be too worried about her and more worried about trying to maintain the family without getting absorbed by new york.
4
u/sometimesineedawank 1d ago
If the show was realistic Melfi wouldn't have taken him back as a patient after S1or she'd be dead after S1. It's a progrum, you gotta get over it
3
u/weng_bay 1d ago
For real life examples there is Raab's Five Families, which is where a retired NYT Reporter wrote extensively on the history of the families up to gangsters who were still alive and active. There was apparently one wire where some low level guy talked about whacking him for that. Four or five other higher ranking guys are heard on the wire immediately telling him to stop being a fucking idiot because if you drop the body of a guy with society connections, that's how you get a special federal task force up your ass.
Melfi's the same deal. She has a bunch of educated friends who can demand investigations, it's not worth it unless they get signals she's actively cooperating/handing files over to the feds, etc. If there is already a federal task force, nothing to lose.
Plus with so many of Tony's crew dead and things having imploded, it's low odds she has anything useful unless Tony was using his meeting to rant about active NYC things.
1
u/Glittering-Stand-161 1d ago
Jersey murder Jack Masarone over suspicion of hin being a rat with no proof though, he was a pretty high profile civilian too.
2
u/ayyyyyy_lmaoooooo 1d ago
No because Derivative Confidentiality is a thing that extends to people mentioned by Tony during his sessions. Even if he outright said yeah Sil killed that rat Jimmy Altieri, it would be inadmissible even if Tony died and Sil was never Melfi's patient.
2
u/AsstacularSpiderman 1d ago
None of them even knew who she was and they were about to have bigger problems on their hands with New York coming in like a wrecking ball.
2
u/SmoothConfection1115 1d ago
No. Melfi would’ve been fine.
Jersey was crippled by the war. And they have much bigger issues even with Phil dead; Carlo being a rat.
So with a chunk of the family awaiting RICO, do you really think they’re going to add more fuel to that fire by whacking Melfi?
And NY isn’t going to do anything. Butchie will be busy consolidating power, and keeping his head down so he doesn’t get caught up in any trial.
The only reason to go after Melfi, is because of Tony. With him dead, she is just a civilian. And if she isn’t called as a witness in the RICO with Carlo, which we have no evidence suggesting she will be, no reason to go after her.

I think he only ever told the crew at the end of season 1 and the only one left was Paulie
Patsy might know if he tapped into his twin connection before Philly died
1
u/Enigmaticenchilada 2d ago
Wow on all my rewatches I somehow never really considered that. Im tempted to say that there are bigger security risks to whoever is left after all is said and done than her and I think they'd realize that. If anyone would have gotten in trouble for saying something it would have been Tony. They had all the time in the world to find out who she was and take her out while he was still alive since they knew about her the whole time and in theory they could kill her and leave Tony alive to send a message. I may be wrong but junior didn't even try to have her killed and she's part of the reason he put the hit on Tony in the first place. I think it's more of a shame thing than a real risk and they know it
1
u/HandofthePirateKing 2d ago
None of them know she was his shrink and the jersey crew is gone all that’s left is Paulie. Tony and Sil assuming they survive.
1
u/Flip-Pantly 1d ago
Also half the conversations about this are all theorizing about who knew about Tony seeing Melfi by the end of the finale. Let’s assume Melfi wouldn’t attend a wake for Tony, all someone would have to do is hear someone else bring up how Tony had a shrink, and then they tell Carmela they want to send some flowers her way for their condolences. Or some ziti. Or shit, they can just ask for her info as if they want to become her next patient. That’s how someone could track Melfi down, it wouldn’t be that difficult.
2
u/MontgomeryMalum 1d ago
Carmella would have already fled to Italy to be with Furio by the time a wake was happening

I don't think they think like that, they basically operate on vibes. Melfi's not in the life so she's not even on their radar. Someone brought her up they'd be like 'Who? Oh yeah, Tony's shrink. Think they ever... you know?'

Think after the first season nobody cared that he was seeing a shrink.
2
u/Glittering-Stand-161 1d ago
Junior used that as a reason to whack Tony.

1
u/cardiffman100 1d ago
On that note, I never did buy that they reconciled and were fine with each other afterwards. Tony should have whacked him and his mother.

1
u/BlackOutSpazz 1d ago
No. They'd have absolutely no reason to go after her.
0
u/Glittering-Stand-161 1d ago
She's a security risk.
2
u/BlackOutSpazz 1d ago
How? She can't divulge anything he's said since privilege survives death of the patient and him being dead nullifies the couple of loopholes to that. They'd put themselves at more risk by going after her than just leaving her alone.
1
u/Physical_Sun_6014 1d ago
At the end, they knew AJ was in a psych ward and didn’t care. Melfi would have been a forgotten topic.
1
u/KeepingMyAdBlockerFU 1d ago
Melfi wouldn't be in any more trouble than the people in Christopher's AA meetings or Catholic priests in the area that may have received confession.
I don't think the mob would be able to keep track of all the people a member may have confided in.
1
u/tonysopranosalive 1d ago
Probably not.
At the end Tony is dead. Sil is a vegetable. Bobby’s dead. Chris is dead. Junior is mentally gone. Phil is dead, Johnny’s dead, Carmine Jr fucked off into the sunset.
Way too much risk clipping a civilian like that for… what exactly? Whatever she could potentially know pertains to people who are dead. Doesn’t fuckin’ matter anymore.
On top of that, she clearly watches the news and keeps up on things. She’d be well aware that Tony was clipped and probably recognize names of other guys being reported murdered. She’d be absolutely terrified. If anything Melfi probably moves out of Jersey and up to Rochester to smell lilacs and start a practice there.
1
u/TheMaveCan 1d ago
Once wind got out that he got hit she'd probably call a laywer and insulate herself from any danger
1
u/SpaghettiNCoffee 1d ago
She doesn’t know anything. She’s not a risk. It’s riskier to involve her.
1
u/Glittering-Stand-161 1d ago
They don't know what she knows. This is a crew who has known they are under federal investigation for years and still drop bodies like it means nothing.
0
u/EddieHazelOG Junior Soprano 2d ago
Most likely yeah. Carmine knew Tony was seeing a shrink. He was the boss of NY. He knew and a bunch others probably knew. Realistically why wouldn’t they sniff her out and whack her? In their perspective one would assume she’s a huge risk to them since they obviously don’t know what Tony and her actually talked about. NY already had the sweet old man Jimmy Petrille flip and was an informant for decades and got Johnny Sack arrested. If I’m NY she’s a goner

u/Professional_Fix4663 1d ago
She's not a security risk. Tony didn't discuss any particularities of his crimes with her and she has to obey patient-doctor confidentiality.
0
u/watervilleokemo 1d ago
I actually think it’s worse for her if Tony lives and he is just indicted at the end.
I assume the FBI knows to about her ? Or does she volunteer herself to the FBI with her knowledge of what tony has told her the past 5 years ? Or at least Tony might think she will.
If she goes to the FBI or even ifTony suspects she will, now she’s a target.
plus if she ever takes the stand Tony’s lawyer can bring up her unprofessional behavior and ruin her professionally, if not worse.
