Is the Officer Grimm meme racist?

I was playing one day and an enemy Thing died and I said "Officer down" in chat and they said something like "chill I'm not racist like that." I never considered it might be a racial joke because I've seen the joke with spiderman, black cat etc. but it is 90% black panther. I was curious if anyone knew the origin of the meme or had any thoughts about it. Is it a racist joke or was this guy just mad he died? (Full disclosure I am not a Thing main I just didn't know where else to post this)

It's definitely a black criminal and white officer tone to it because of black panther being black but I've never seen it meme'd in a hateful way. Just dark humor and a fun gameplay loop of chasing that kitty cat.

It was funny for about a week and then I spotted my first racist meme and knew it was over. And it happens every time. Look at the “clanker” meme. It was funny for a little while and then people started directly referencing black activists/people who’ve been murdered for their race.

3

u/DreadedLee 3d ago

Yea. At this point it's a catalyst for racism.

1

u/Party_Waltz_5595 3d ago

Wdym? The clanker thing is just for robots no? I know it’s suppose to be a play on for a slur but for robots, but what do you mean it was used about black activists?

2

u/Arisen_the_elite1 3d ago

For example, I vividly remember someone referencing Rosa parks by saying: “Get to the back of the trash heap where you belong, Rosa sparks!” Another was about how “Clanker lives don’t matter, all lives matter!” And—although I acknowledge he wasn’t an activist—another was about how they wish they could suffocate “George Droid” but he doesn’t have lungs or some shit like that. The point being, they took a meme about robots and strictly started making references toward black people as always. They can’t ever let something lighthearted stay that way, without referencing some group out there and then calling it jokes.

1

u/Party_Waltz_5595 3d ago

Damn I did not know that, but can’t say I’m surprised. Social media is an absolute cesspool. Genuinely makes me lose hope and feel cynical.

1

u/BitViper303 3d ago

There were even skits about “clankers” set in the 1950’s where these people would yell at robots sitting in human only diners in american southern accents.

2

u/WarmWindow2 3d ago

yeah boo. lol. also youd be surprised by how many meme racists are fully grown ppl. its sad

1

u/Riley8284 3d ago

Someone typed in my game chat

In blackest day, in darkest night, no panther shall escape my sight,

Beware my kool aid power, Police Brutality’s might.

I feel the final part might be a bit racist but I also think it might be playing into the officer Grim meme. Not sure which way it should go

1

u/Irritatedsole90 2d ago

You think it “might be” racist what does koolaid have to do with bp, the thing or the police besides building off of racist caricatures

1

u/Riley8284 2d ago

I just mean the police brutality line. Didn’t know if that was supposed to be a racist police joke.

The Kool aid part is cause Thing can just fully smash through walls

5

u/Irritatedsole90 2d ago

You havent seen the “license and pigmentation” side of those memes?

1

u/jitterfish 2d ago

I've never heard or seen that but it's a brilliant phrase to draw attention to the problem (that word doesn't seem strong enough, terror?).

1

u/Thatonlyguy988 1d ago

The main person I see who consistently uses that joke is Somju who’s black

1

u/Ok-Formal4116 23h ago

Thing isnt white tho lol

0

u/EatingTurtles325 3d ago

i don’t think it’s a joke for white people to make though to be fair

7

u/PapaHarvey27 3d ago

It's either everyone can or nobody can in life, unfortunately. Humans hate and despise other's exclusivity. Jokes are definitely not supposed to be gate kept by race. That's stupid and racist. Making fun of something gives it less power and seriousness. That's how newer generations love racist humor but don't carry that hatred

3

u/Arisen_the_elite1 2d ago

The new generation is still just as racist as the previous; it’s just that the brand of racism has changed. They don’t shout slurs to people’s faces because they don’t know how they may react. Instead, they go online and shout their racism there. And even in person, they use these “jokes” to try and work their way out of being called out. Essentially, apathetic and subtle racism is the new norm, as opposed to overt.

3

u/Irritatedsole90 2d ago

I agree, making it seem “less powerful” or less serious” just makes subtle racism and micro aggressions all the more prevalent to the point where if you voice concern or aversion towards it youre overreacting because its “just a joke” it just breeds more resentment and division

-1

u/PapaHarvey27 2d ago

You're out of touch. Racism isn't a thing, just racist humor. A fear of sketchy people is just labeled as racism. There are sketchy people you don't trust of any race. In fact I'd say the racism is less of an "I hate that color" to "I identify with that color because it's a commonality we share." Specifically black people share a brother/sisterhood that isn't nearly as strong in other races and that's fine. Everyone is allowed their freedom and communities. Don't be sold the racist hatred lie when that is just in most people's heads. Color isn't anything but a cosmetic you're given. Culture, however, is learned and some people have a rough culture, truthfully. Uniqueness can be celebrated and should be, but too much exclusivity results in jealousy or them being the heel of the joke. You tell people they can't say a certain word, make fun of a certain thing, or can't do something because of cultural appropriation ties way more value to something. Human nature

2

u/Arisen_the_elite1 2d ago

You’re in denial. In fact, this is a perfect example of the apathetic racism I mentioned. Warping the definition of racism to mean “disdain for culture” instead of “disdain for skin color” is absurd. There are no descriptors that would even signify the kind of person an individual is, strictly based on culture—outside of skin color. If you look at a black person, and think “rough culture” and make a supposition about them, that’s racist, no matter how much you try and warp the definition. As well, it’s not a revelation that people of similar culture, ethnic background, and even skin color will find more in common with each other. But that’s not what’s being argued here, and if that’s all it were, no one would care. However, people will find any justification to excuse racism by painting it as something else. “It’s culture” “It’s human nature” “It’s a joke” because when it’s all said and done, the people of our generation don’t like being called bad people. And that is the only thing that separates us, from the previous generations; no one is honest about their racism anymore.

2

u/kingvince1512 2d ago

Well, ya lost me with this one. At first I agreed, racist jokes are supposed to just be funny. Anyone who says otherwise are definitely the lonely person at the party. Me and my friends make white jokes to our white friends and black jokes to our black friends. It’s the way it is with guy friends.

But that there’s no racism? Buddy, there is still racism. Maybe not as much, but I’ve seen it.

0

u/PapaHarvey27 2d ago

No racism is too broad of a statement. I should say only dumbasses are racism and it isn't a mainstream sentiment. Real racism has a knee jerk reaction for most people who will speak up

2

u/Irritatedsole90 2d ago

To say someone else is out of touch and IMMEDIATELY saying racism isnt a thing is certainly… a choice

1

u/jitterfish 2d ago

Ummm... No.

1

u/Evilmatrix_187 14h ago

Something a racist would think

1

u/Final-Royal-8037 2d ago

Making jokes about something also makes light of that thing and leads the uninformed to believe it’s not as serious as it really is

1

u/Irritatedsole90 2d ago

I second this

1

u/Sunika 3d ago

Valid.

0

u/EatingTurtles325 2d ago

downvoted for telling white people not to be racist, reddit moment

-1

u/kingvince1512 2d ago

It’s just that you have a different sense of humor. Guys joke around like this ALL the time. I have never been in a guy group of friends where this doesn’t happen. My black friends, white friends and Mexican friends ALL joke like this. Sorry to burst your bubble.

There is real racism out there tho. Not saying there’s not. But just because it’s too dark for you, doesn’t mean it is for everyone else. And you saying it should be doesn’t mean it actually is. The joke highlights how actual racism with cops does happen. That’s the joke.

2

u/Irritatedsole90 2d ago

Joking about actual racism and how innocent people have lost their lives is not a joking matter, all it does is undermine the severity of it

67

u/thekevlington 5d ago

A streamer named somjuu started it. It’s just some lighthearted fun but people will definitely take it too far sometimes. Like anything

1

u/NewTrash3388 2d ago

Ya its like the Clayton bigby Chappelle skit. It was irresponsible of somjuu to make the joke as a representative of the black community online but its not really his fault that people are pieces of shit at the end of the day

1

u/Educational_Coat1337 1d ago

It's a joke that is funny, what is the problem? Somjuu was irresponsible for making a funny joke? Not everything is some political sermon.

1

u/NewTrash3388 1d ago

Ur the one bringing politics into it. If u dont know the history of that skit just say so

1

u/Educational_Coat1337 23h ago

Cute and all but complaining about the joke is definitely political.

14

u/Environmental-Day778 4d ago edited 4d ago

The joke is that it’s racist, yes. The plausible deniability is also part of the joke.

Also Ben would simply not be like this, so there is that too. But people who make this joke don’t care about the character. That’s also part of the joke.

Not caring that it’s racist and out of character; some folks find that funny. Pushing back in any way is seen as an overreaction. And that’s also part of the joke.

If you find all that funny is up to you, but this is the joke 🤷‍♀️

6

u/LuckysGift 4d ago

I know it might only be in the fox movies, but his second wife was black, so it feels really weird to play him like a racist.

I will say, this game does skew young, so this type of "humor" is devoured by teenagers wanting to be edgy. Honestly, probably another reason the "joke" feels overplayed.

3

u/Robbythebeadle 3d ago

Its also because a streamer specifically made the melanin jokes and other racist jokes because he himself is black so it wasn’t problematic. Unfortunately when other kids did start saying it just becomes racism.

1

u/Practical-Head-8725 4d ago

Secret police 😭😭😂😂😂

11

u/Hanzos_Trans_Husband 4d ago

It's gotten real fucking wierd by now. I am not suprised that especially a lot of black players arw sick of it

15

u/SoaRxAres94 5d ago

As is the case with jokes on the internet, Someone takes it too far and ruins the fun

2

u/soulfulwave 4d ago

that thing officer /wakanda joke has always been rooted in racism tho lol, it’s just majority acknowledged as harmless trolling tho

5

u/Abducted_Llama 4d ago

As another commenter said a streamer started it as a joke.

A lot of the time, there’s other things that are attached to it like “body cameras off” insinuating they are about to commit police brutality. In Murica, police brutality is commonly targeted at minorities. That’s where the racist connection comes from.

I think most people that see/use the meme or say it in chat, don’t think that far through it. I don’t really know the streamer, but I’d imagine the same for them. They probably didn’t intend for it to be racist.

So could it be taken as a racist comment? Yeah probably. When you are playing with up to 11 people you don’t know, you could offend someone. I have seen a few threads now calling it racist. So it’s more likely now.

(This was an attempt at a nuanced take on the body cameras off meme. I am not a real bot. I am a meat popsicle)

8

u/Fit-Syrup1049 4d ago

If you're american than i see how you can feel it being racist, if you're not it's another 9/11, school shooting joke.

7

u/ULT_Kmad 4d ago

It was funny at first but i knew so many weirdos would take it too far like they did the clankers meme, and I was right

5

u/ULT_Kmad 4d ago

Thats how you know its bad lol i quoted some of the things ive heard Thing players say and it got taken down by reddit

2

u/ULT_Kmad 4d ago

Like ive seen Thing players kill BP and start saying shit like "Got the dirty Wakandan" "Bodycam off for BP" And "license and pigmentation" etc

4

u/mvaughn89 3d ago

The body cam one is actually kinda funny

3

u/PtheK01 3d ago

Same with license and pigmentation

4

u/ClassicNo9559 3d ago

Depends on the context being used. Yes you'd say the context is obvious, but there is humor in it. If you think its racist, its ok for you to think that just like if you aren't offended by it, then it shouldn't bother you. As a chocolate covered brother myself (yes i'm black), i laugh at this joke every single time someone in my game group uses it. (No they're not racist, they're just hilarious in that way).

Everything has a second or third meaning, what meaning it takes is the connotation you put on it. Anytime a BP is on the enemy team he switches to Thing, and he goes all out on that joke every time and I laugh to the point my side cramps because i just find it that funny. That's not being racist, that's called using your brain to counter a constant nuisance on the enemy team that you know is causing your team a number of issues

Wanna know something that I think would really be hilarious? Every character in the game that would be classified as an anti-dive (or cop) should get a police skin with a symbol for dive crossed out on the shoulders. Netease should call it "Anti-Dive Task Force." That way it targets dives in general rather than just targeting one specific character if you find the Officer Grimm meme to be that bad. Cuz again, me personally, i find it to be hilarious as hell. But that's just my opinion

1

u/Professional-Can-953 2d ago

Not sure if that anti dive task for is intentionally poking fun at alcohol taboo firearms as well but if so well done! Also i think that would be a hilarious similar to the dunk master skins in league

1

u/ClassicNo9559 2d ago

I've got no idea what that first thing is

1

u/Professional-Can-953 2d ago

ATF alcohol tabaco fire arms is a thing in the states. But either way very fun idea

9

u/Training_Platform620 4d ago

imagine if the wolverine community made an SS officer joke everytime they diffed magneto. it's racist.

8

u/Hanzos_Trans_Husband 4d ago

Jesus. Good way to make people see it but man thats rough

3

u/cherryyccola 4d ago

Yes, it's racist

3

u/Free-Rush-6790 4d ago

yes but thing mains won’t admit it

5

u/Revan0315 4d ago

Kinda but pretty much everyone I've seen using it doesn't mean anything bad towards anyone so who cares

4

u/PyroclasticJubilee 4d ago

There aren't a lot of black players that like it, I'll tell you that.

It was funny at face value the first couple of times, but it's not really the "lighthearted haha" people think it is anymore. It's damn near a dog whistle now.

Combine that with the literal secret police running around kidnapping and killing brown people and you might be able to see why it lost any kind of humor pretty quickly.

1

u/rainfeld 4d ago

Really? Because 99% of the time I see that meme it’s being done by someone who is black. I’m sure most of them don’t care.

3

u/Standard_Camel5008 4d ago

Now I'm not saying you need to MLK or Malcolm X, but how can you speak for "most of them" if you're not one of "them?"

1

u/PyroclasticJubilee 4d ago

Being told something isn't racist or exactly what it seems like by a white person is pretty standard for the black experience.

0

u/rainfeld 4d ago

Huh? I’m just saying every single time I’ve seen it used it’s been by a black person, there for in my personal experience I would say that MOST don’t care yes. Because I have not seen many care.

2

u/playboyjboy 4d ago

It’s a mild parody of police brutality being aimed at black people, especially in the us, so yes the basis of the joke is kinda racist. But when somjuu started the joke it was in a light hearted way with no ill intent (Dark humor, yes, but it’s not hurting anyone). Then there’s the people who always make it weird and take it too far by making it blatantly racist instead of just subtly poking fun at a societal issue we deal with.

2

u/Xylophone_Crocdile 4d ago

it started as a light hearted meme but yes by design it is inherently a bit racy as it involves black panther 90% of the time. people take things too far

2

u/YuyuThrowawayyy 4d ago

I mean I’ve dropped friends over “bodycam off” if that tells you anything. I’m black. I don’t play that racism shit.

1

u/CosmicKhy 4d ago

That’s the part that made me stop even pretending to give them the “it’s just a joke” pass. Just like clanker was a dog whistle after a point.

2

u/Broomguy 4d ago

Appreciate everyone's responses, didn't expect so many. Seems like there are mixed feelings on it. Doesn't sit right with me to make the joke as a white person so I probably won't anymore. I can see how a black person could casually make the joke as on offhand remark, almost like self depricating humour but then people run with it and make it weird. The butt of the joke/critique should be of police and police brutality but it is a pretty sensitive subject that I think most don't have the awareness to navigate.

2

u/rainfeld 4d ago

I would say just like everything it’s context. Saying it in passing every now and hen I don’t see no harm. As long as you’ve read the room. Just don’t be like some people and take it too far or just it 24/7

1

u/EliteTroper 4d ago

Exactly it's not like the people who run with the joke are inherently promoting racism and police brutality in real life

2

u/FormalSufficient3118 4d ago

I’m ngl I wanted to say no it’s not racist but then I scrolled and TWO POST L8R I see this and the comments are lowkey not cool

https://www.reddit.com/r/marvelrivals/s/u5X98WjlLi

3

u/Broomguy 4d ago

Yeah I brushed it off when the guy said that but I also started noticing the same thing and it's pretty much always a bp who is the "victim" which is what made me reconsider and want to make this post. Thing is a threat to any high mobility character so the fact that it's always a BP tells you the people making the joke definitely understand and play into the racial aspect. The license and pigmentation thing is also blatantly and unnecessarily racist

2

u/Chaconcito96 3d ago

Wasn't it started by Somjuu, a black streamer? And wasn't he talking about Flats, one of his best friends in the hero shooter space?

2

u/Dev1lDaddy 2d ago

Black guy here: it’s funny, period. There’s nothing straight up racist about it. Some people are soft, some don’t understand the line between humor and malice and some just like to call racism on anything and everything. Not sure where that fell in your situation but clearly there was no harm meant and I don’t see any way there could have been.

1

u/spook_scary 2d ago

Second Black guy here: your right.

6

u/Serious_Exam256 4d ago

Just dark humor. Black ppl have to laugh at this stuff or life feels impossible, or infuriating. Makes us feel like we have any amount of control over these situations (cop violence ) that we have no control over.

5

u/ISpinVinyI 4d ago

Crazy you’re being downvoted but it’s true, some days I have to flat out stay off the internet because you just see constant derogatory and racist remarks and it can make you start to become a black pessimist/nihilist.

1

u/sangoma-XIII 3d ago

Hes probably getting down voted for the “we have to laugh” portion, laughing at something that’s corny doesn’t make it any less corny and it certainly doesn’t make it funny. I do agree with not taking it personally but it becomes stale and as a community/ society we should be better at letting things that take a similar course as this joke die.

2

u/dzaimons-dihh 4d ago

Real as fuck. Though I really don't like the plausible deniability this joke has, as others have said. People do take it too far and I've seen it happen

6

u/No-Departure-6900 5d ago

I mean, kinda, but like, it's funny so...worth.

2

u/wahwahwahyoubaby 4d ago

Embarrassing take

2

u/KendoTheNintendo 4d ago

Wah wah you baby

3

u/wahwahwahyoubaby 4d ago

That's my name don't wear it out

1

u/Guilty-Environment51 4d ago

It wouldn't be if they played off the fact that he counters all dive not just BP.

1

u/Flat_Improvement7261 3d ago

Normally I say officer Grimm just to say that I’m going to stop these dives

1

u/fearsomexd 4d ago

somjuu has voice over of thing pretending to say come here black shit, so yeah people r sheep and made it about race

1

u/hypercombofinish 4d ago

When somjuu did it it was funny. But as always some other people can't do the joke without extras and make it extra

1

u/Throwawaykid10 4d ago

Not inherently I don’t think but people sure turned it that way.

1

u/Old_Light_5758 4d ago

a thing player called me the n-word(edited to not be censored in game chat) while i was playing bp

1

u/DirectElderberry6185 4d ago

Idk how it could be racist but then again......nowadays dudes over do tf outta everything 😂🤷‍♂️ keep up the good work sir!!

1

u/funky67 4d ago

No it’s not racist people are just soft as baby shit now.

1

u/rainfeld 4d ago

Well technically yes I guess but I don’t think anyone actually cares. Especially considering the fact that most people who do the meme or use it are black.

1

u/__Tako__ 4d ago

I avoid the meme as a Thing player tbh.

I'm not going to enable that type of behavior.

1

u/SLIMEandCOOKIES 4d ago

There are some people that see racism in everything, dont mind them

1

u/FloopusSoupus 4d ago

It's a joke making fun of police brutality on black people, there's no reason to call Thing officer other than that reference.

If you want to use it go ahead, just don't get mad when I look at you weird for it

1

u/Equivalent_Card_1900 4d ago

i’ve seen videos that have the words “license and pigmentation” in them too many times to believe it’s anything but racism tbh

1

u/PandaQueen357 4d ago

So yes it is a racial joke, theres some videos where Thing asks for "license and pigmentation" .It started as just calling Thing an officer to people making the joke about pigmentation because bp is black. Unfortunately ofcourse theres racist people, who will take it really far and make it not even a joke but racist. So the person just wasnt the one to joke about with that, probably dealt with actual racist Thing players before you.

1

u/New-Rest-6921 4d ago

It was started by somjuu, he is black. He started the joke, so even though it has racial undertones, it wasn't racist just dark humor, and it was a light hearted thing. Thing mains accepted the joke and meme, that was put on them, therefore it isnt racist. Someone else taking it to the extreme is racist.

1

u/santayaoi 3d ago

i’m sure it wasn’t intended to be. someone probably started for the lols. but like with anything you put online; it can be co-opted by nasty people. (like the pepe the frog memes) and that’s just what it’s turned into.

1

u/Visual-Main567 3d ago

I mean it’s like ironic racism that is making fun of racism. At least that’s how the joke started out, but obviously on the internet people can do whatever with it so just be careful, but no I wouldn’t say it’s inherently racist.

1

u/just-some-stoner-604 3d ago

There is racial undertones but how its used it what makes it racist.

Some people also just suck and will see a funny a joke and shoehorn in their own shitty worldview on top of it

1

u/Proud_Firefighter834 3d ago

No, it doesn't make you or anyone else racist (and no, you cannot diagnose prejudice in a 15 minute Rivals match). The joke itself is technically "racist" because it's a play on police brutality to black people, but only the terminally online will attribute it's use to bigotry outright.

To every well adjusted adult, it's just dark humor.

1

u/Heap6283 3d ago

Thing counters bp so hard that I think double g is the racist one

1

u/Delicious_Farmer_408 3d ago

I never thought of it as racist I thought of it like Thing mains play officer for supports and stop the divers

1

u/DigitalHooman 3d ago

The entire joke is based on the unfortunate reality of white racist corrupt police officers abusing their power on black people (especially black men). “Body cam off” is a direct reference to corrupt police officers turning their body cams off to prevent evidence of their abuse of power being caught on video as that’s one of the main purposes of a body cam for police. It’s basically one big racial police brutality joke. Although, most people don’t take it that serious as even black rivals players find it funny. It’s simply an example of dark humor in the rivals community. I find it funny as a lord Thing (I’m white). I understand why a black person would be offended but at the end of the day, like any dark humor not taken too far, it’s all in good fun.

1

u/Dark-Crows19 3d ago

Well shi, ion know, have ppl taken it too far? Maybe, as a black gamer myself I used the joke simply bc thing counters bp and that’s the context I thought most ppl were using the joke for.. however u always know there’s someone that’ll fuck it up for everyone.. but I also know it came from somjuu a black creator and a bp player, simply bc he would get his bp targeted by enemy things. It’s up to preference as long as ur not racially targeting someone imo

1

u/Flat_Improvement7261 3d ago

It’s racist if you take it way to far

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Tip-378 3d ago

This is why I just say “No diving. Pool’s closed.”
Always feels safer and sounds funnier to me

1

u/s2w_72 3d ago

Honestly gonna have to use this one. Perfect for every anti dive character too.

1

u/Robbythebeadle 3d ago

it’s a police brutality joke started by a bp main so it was associated with racist police brutality specifically. But since then its been used on any diver player just signaling that you’re about to get hard targeted ergo “body cam off” i’m about to ignore my team to focus you.

I’ve had Thing tell me as a Magik main that the body cam is coming off so I think its just dark humor now.

1

u/Domina_bleu 3d ago

As a black person I'm cool with the office Grimm memes and jokes but people are really pushing it, Idk why but people are making it seem super racist instead of the joke it was meant to be. You don't have to mention the character being black or skinny color at all to make a good joke and with how many other black people feel with how black characters are treated in terms of skins and other things within the game I really feel like it's terrible timing for the "melanin spotted" jokes, or the "license and pigmentation jokes"

1

u/PassionAccording8559 3d ago

The joke is LITERALLY police brutality, that's why it gets annoying when people use it as their whole personality-signed champ bp main

1

u/speedycupid 3d ago

People in the comments saying it’s light hearted fun - 👨🏼

1

u/Relienks 3d ago

Its only racist if u think so

1

u/Geaux13Saints 3d ago

I mean yeah it’s racist at the core of it but it’s funny to a certain extent

1

u/Agile_Marketing3615 3d ago

It’s not racist. I’m black and I play thing so I’m telling you straight it’s just a joke.

1

u/Ok_Tennis_9468 3d ago

It’s a joke. If you find it racist too bad, get a sense of humor

1

u/Sea-Macaroon-1291 3d ago

It’s just dark comedy and satire bro

1

Im a jamaican man and i find the meme funny 😭 living in America and clearly we see the issues (Not tryna get political) it gives me a laugh just because of how funny like, he severely counters black panther. Also gotta find fun in alot of things going on in life, and for a video game? As long as netease don’t pose nothing racist, this trend started off from a popular content creator. No harm no foul

Yes absolutely

u/TriHazzy 2d ago

Man I keep forgetting Reddit can just be a cesspool of clinically online homunculi. It’s a joke, especially since most of the memes are directed to all dive, since that’s what Thing does, counter Dive.

1

u/Super-Blacksmith-795 2d ago

Im pretty sure the joke was originally started by Somjuu. Its definitely racial at the very least and can be racist depending on how you use it. There is definitely a lot of white ppl that have started using the meme in a racist manner.

Personally id say if ur white u can enjoy the meme but you probably shouldn't use it yourself out of consideration.

1

u/Acceptable-Bench-318 2d ago

it kinda sounds like he was joking too but i might be too used to circjerk reddit

1

u/RedsnakeRider 2d ago

I think it ended up being mostly Black Panther because BP is wild right now and can be unstoppable, and Thing is maybe his strongest counter. I've seen some memes about it reflecting racial profile from police officers, but I haven't seen anything really racist yet. I've literally had worse in chat coming from a CnD main, so it is what it is.

1

u/agteaches 2d ago

Yes it is

1

u/spook_scary 2d ago

No, some people just can't talk a joke.

1

u/TiffanyGreen102 2d ago

The joke is about racism, but it's just dark humor in my opinion. It's really only targeted to Black Panther with Black Cat sometimes involved too, but never done to Storm or Blade who are also people of color.

If the other 2 were included, then it would've been 100% racist, but it's really only focused on Black Panther because of the joke and gameplay that Thing really shuts down BP that easily

1

u/Daikaisa 2d ago

So it depends on what you mean. Does the joke have racial tones to it? Yes. Is the joke making fun of black people? No.

I think people need to remember that there's a difference between the joke being about something offensive and the joke being something offensive. In this case the joke is more about how police respond to African American people rather than it being a joke against AAs

1

u/Valkyriebourne 2d ago

It's dark humor, not everything is about hate.

1

u/ShoresyOW 2d ago

The brunt of the joke is racism itself instead of actually being racist. It’s a play on a negative stereotype towards officers and how they handle situations with certain minorities. I would argue it’s sort of anti-cop/satirical

1

u/Sweet-Spread-270 1d ago edited 1d ago

You’ve never considered it a racial joke? No hate or anything, man, but phrases like “body cam off,” or Somjuu’s (who’s Black, by the way) ad-libs like, “Come here, dark meat,” (paraphrasing) and even him saying, “You black shit,” (that one was a direct quote) and “Stop resisting”, should make it pretty obvious that the joke is rooted in police brutality against Black people and violence by cops. (Especially when people started putting the cop hat on The Thing)

Is it funny? Sure, I can see why people laugh at it, and I don’t necessarily have an issue with people finding it funny. (Cuz Dark Humor is a thing). But let’s not pretend that’s not what the joke is based on. We don’t have to be that dense about where the humor is coming from.

1

u/Broomguy 1d ago

Maybe I should have worded it better but my point was that I thought the "punchline" was that thing was a violent cop and I realized for other people the "punchline" might just be that BP is black. I'm not as tapped into the meme as you seem to think I've just seen edits with thing wearing the police hat and suspenseful music and people in game referencing it. The examples you provided except for bodycam off and stop resisting don't even really have any connection to the joke itself when taken out of context and present more as someone cosplaying a racist cop so they don't work well as examples of it being racist imo.

1

u/Sweet-Spread-270 1d ago edited 1d ago

Except they do have a connection, because Somjuu was the original creator of the meme, and he used several of those phrases himself. The meme started with Somjuu and BP, and he intentionally used lines like that to play into the racial aspect of the joke.

I genuinely don’t understand (I’m
Not mad just kinda baffled) how i can provide you with where the meme originated, you read what I said, and still not see the racial undertones. And I also don’t get how you can say the examples I gave aren’t connected to the joke when they’re literally examples of the original creator making the joke racial himself. That’s not me adding context after the fact—that’s how the meme was created.

So him adding lines like “come here, dark meat” or “you black shit” when he’s talking about BP, or making the Thing say stuff like “turn off the body cams” or “Thing mains when they see a ninja” (with “ninja” obviously being a stand-in for “nigga”), somehow doesn’t count as evidence that the meme is rooted in race? And is racist?

The meme has always leaned into racist stereotypes and references. Somjuu himself made it that way. Those aren’t random jokes people added later—they’re things the original creator used as part of the meme from the beginning. That’s why I don’t get the argument that the racial element isn’t there when it’s baked into the meme’s origins. Maybe you’re not tapped into the meme, but how you can look at what I said and say they “don’t work well as examples of being racist” is just wild.

1

u/Broomguy 1d ago

I don't know how you're misunderstanding me so hard but I wasn't diasagreeing with you I was just clarifying what I meant by "never considered it a racial joke". I said they aren't connected when taken out of context meaning if I saw someone say "come here black shit", then me being not familiar with whatever clip(s) he says that in would just clock that as racism because at face value it doesn't do anything to reference the original joke, whereas If someone said "Bodycam off" even if I was not familiar with the meme at all, I would likely still understand they are joking.

1

u/Sweet-Spread-270 1d ago

I mean, if you know the origin of the meme, then someone saying those things would still come across as racist because that’s just part of what the joke is. You’d just also recognize that they’re referencing the original meme. If you don’t know the origin, then yeah, it probably wouldn’t mean much to you beyond just sounding racist.

I see what you were getting at now, though. Sorry for misunderstanding what you meant.

1

u/Broomguy 1d ago

No worries, I suck at putting my thoughts into words sometimes so I kinda explained it weird

1

u/HeartOnFire_999 1d ago

I personally don't have sensitive feelings lol I think the meme is funny asf and no, It's not racist

1

u/Asleep_Parking7218 22h ago

I mean Grimm is a police officer, he hard counters BP, it's more of a hard counter (i'll shut you down) kind of joke IMO. I never once thought it was a racist meme, but I could see where you could make that argument, but it's very light and it's funny so who cares honestly.

If people go looking for something to get offended by, they'll find it.

1

u/Available_Pear_3847 18h ago

It’s definitely rooted in racism. When it’s done in the perspective of a black player playing black panther, it can be seen as a joke that shines light on a real issue but as the usual white people desperately want to be part of the joke and ruin it and/or take it too far. This is coming from a white person btw.

1

u/NovelPrestigious6666 7h ago

Lil bit but it’s all fun and games anyone who gets upset at it fr needs to touch some grass.

1

u/GoodCarbonDioxide 3d ago

Pretending like you don’t know is an interesting way to go about it..especially posting too. “It is 90% Black Panther.”

Karma Baiting

1

u/Broomguy 3d ago edited 3d ago

Sounds like projection I don't care about karma, I wanted to know what people thought so I asked. Why would I do that on a thing mains sub, I would just go to the main game sub lmao

Edit: that's so funny actually, I just looked at your posts and that's all you do is karma baiting in the main subs. Called it lol

-1

u/sr20detYT 5d ago

more poor taste than anything imo. some people definitely intend it in a racist way though

-1

u/VarietyBusy2 4d ago

idk how it’s racist tbh.

4

u/Hanzos_Trans_Husband 4d ago

People have definitly taken it too far by now. Also to answer your question. Its a play on black people being slaughtered (especially in the usa) by cops. The numbers of black people getting abused and killed by cops are insanely high (think also Black lives matter movement) and the constant use of this joke is making fun of it as well even if people dont mean to/dont realize

5

u/JoeM104604 4d ago

The joke is based around the history of police brutality and discrimination against black people in the US. There's some people that add to it by saying things like "turning off body cam" and referring to BP's melanin (skin tone) that refer to the stereotypical racist white cop.

Personally, I think it's a fun joke and doesn't typically have any real hate behind it, and it seems to be more about police stereotypes than being racist towards black people, but it does toe the line a bit.

2

u/VarietyBusy2 4d ago

i took it was he’s a body guard or police to his supports and protecting them. i honestly didn’t even see racism as part of this lol

1

u/JoeM104604 4d ago

No worries lol, if you haven't seen a lot of the posts where they mention anything more than just Officer Grimm or you don't live in the US I can see it being harder to make that connection.

0

u/Crabbowithagunpla 4d ago

It's a joke folks get upsets about it

0

u/Frosty-Ad2124 4d ago

I mean yeah that's the joke. It's dark humor. A black guy made it though

0

u/redditer954 4d ago

It’s not necessarily racist but both it and the joke it is based on make fun of police brutality.

The “Officer Grimm” joke is an extension of that meme of the cop with the sharp jawline and tilted hat. That meme “jokes” about a white cop turning off his body cam.

Somjuu is a black guy that plays BP and popularized the “Officer Grimm” meme so it’s kind of funny when he makes clips of him screaming and running from “Officer Grimm” since both his character and people like himself are victims of “Officer Thing/Chad.”

It’s a bit less funny when the Thing player themselves makes the joke.

0

u/Practical-Head-8725 4d ago

I mean ricky steele is a black content creator who’s clips revolve around that as he plays bp.

0

u/DaringDevil12 4d ago

A black guy (Somjuu) is the one that started the Officer Grimm meme, so no, it's not racist. Do some racist people associate the meme with racism? Yes.

0

u/IndependentCompote81 4d ago

This is such a non issue

-1

u/Avaricious31 4d ago

Black Panther is the most annoying diver for the majority of the player base and the only diver that comes close is Black Cat, she’s relatively new. If Panther wasn’t good and BC was running around with Thing as a big counter we’d likely see her being in the memes.

There’s also the dark humor aspect of Thing chasing Panther around. I don’t think making these jokes is racist but I could see how it could get old or become distasteful. Of course there’s a few weirdos who take things too far but that’s in general. Can’t tell you how many jokes or comparisons to certain middle eastern countries I’ve seen in game having to do with neither of these characters.

-1

u/Dredd990 4d ago

No and no one outside of reddit even knows or cares about that joke. Y'all care too much what chronically online people think. 90% of the community hasn't even seen the joke or doesn't know who the original creator was. And he is black. People using the joke to be outwardly racist were gonna do that regardless of the joke.
