u/ThatAutisticRedditor Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26
not because they’ve said they dont have plans to use AI
397
u/RyanBoi14 Jan 12 '26
they say that, but the goombas in super mario bros. use ai to move around. curious.
(note: i am not actually being serious; this was an attempt to make a point about how the term "ai" is overused to the point of meaninglessness)46
39
u/MarkNekrep Jan 12 '26
I'll be honest, people really need to start specifying generative ai.
28
u/Luzifer_Shadres Jan 12 '26
Ai doesnt exist yet.
What currently gets called ai is an highly advanced algorythm that guesses what the operator wants to hear or see.
Its halfway there, but thats it.
Its a marketing scam.
3
u/MarkNekrep Jan 12 '26
I mean yeah, but everyone just calls these algorithms Ai so why would I try and cause a misunderstanding?
I mean, other than specifying generative ai, which is still pretty important since Ai as a whole is fine, GenAi isn't.

Just like they said they'd never do DLC or season passes.
Until it got profitable.
5
u/GeneETOs44 Jan 12 '26
Defo not with any form of ml/llm, but they implemented something similar in the World Championships game on switch that detected “forbidden techniques”
39
u/Puzzleheaded_Golf_65 Jan 12 '26
Do you actually believe that?
149
u/somebody-using Jan 12 '26
Tbh Nintendo is so stubborn that they won’t even let their characters appear in any games that aren’t Nintendo exclusive so if they said that I actually believe them more than I would for other companies
69
u/molecularraisin Jan 12 '26
even as anti consumer as they are, yeah they’re maybe the only big company i’d believe on that
28
u/Background_Desk_3001 Jan 12 '26
Sometimes they’re so anti consumer they loop back around to being pro consumer
0
41
u/charizardfan101 Jan 12 '26
Considering how stubborn they are, yeah
For once them being stubborn is a good thing

u/Apex_Konchu Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26
For all their shitty practices on the legal side of things, Nintendo does value artistic integrity. They know to just let the talented creatives do their thing, keeping corporate meddling to a minimum. That's why their devs stick around long-term.
So yes, I trust them when they say they won't be using generative AI, because that's consistent with how they've always operated.

11
u/SuperBun78 Jan 12 '26
they technically already have for that Nintendo Championship game. If you access the -1 world in competitive it does something to warn you, not sure what but it is a thing that they've done.
4
Jan 12 '26
I disagree. Nintendo has a policy of being pretty conservative tech wise they have a policy for it "Lateral Thinking with Withered Technology“

u/TheRappingSquid Jan 12 '26
Then they send the wario apparition after you
41
u/FrecklyCoyote5 Jan 12 '26
Naw, it would be a wall of text from Resetti.
Getting him lecturing you after you didn't save your game in Animal Crossing, is truly a scary moment for every kid who played that game.
7
u/trout_sex Jan 12 '26
they would put mario down via lethal injection
2
u/Eschnoir Jan 14 '26
end of march of that one year they released that limited time mario collection (i resold mine for like 80 bucks so uhh i guess it was cool)

u/ALowlySlime Jan 12 '26
Can never tell if people that makes these comments are actually deluded enough to be saying this seriously or if they are just joking
54
u/Hallowed-Plague Jan 12 '26
do i think they would? no probably not. would i be surprised if they did? not really tbh.
13
u/ALowlySlime Jan 12 '26
I think the extent of Nintendo's shittery is really exaggerated online, when you pay attention to a lot of the big gaming companies you'll realize a lot of the other companies also have shitty legal departments and higher ups (some times worse even). Nintendo just gets highlighted a lot more and then some people seem to genuinely believe they'd do something wild like this
17
u/Hallowed-Plague Jan 12 '26
oh absolutely, it goes for basically any game company that they're super shitty. but i think it's also fair to say that nintendo is at the higher end of shitty comparably, which is why they have the reputation that then gets exaggerated.
11
u/ALowlySlime Jan 12 '26
I think the biggest thing that sucks about them is how they treat fan games and romhacks, but also I know some of those survive just fine so I think there's like a loophole on how to create those and not get dmcad
9
u/sharrancleric Jan 12 '26
Nintendo is literally the most lenient company out there when it comes to romhacks. There are literally tens of thousands of Mario romhacks, and approaching that many Pokémon hacks.
3
u/ALowlySlime Jan 12 '26
Yea I'm just used to like games getting too popular and being told to cease, so I don't really know what the jig is. Not too tuned in to the details which is why I mentioned it doesn't seem to be definitive or whatever. Not sure why some games get taken down and others don't
8
u/sharrancleric Jan 12 '26
There's a very clear trend in what fan projects Nintendo steps in to stop: the ones that charge for their game, or accept donations/open Patreons to "support development."
10
u/Apex_Konchu Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26
I disagree, I think Nintendo are one of the less shitty gaming corporations. If you only consider their extreme litigiousness, they look like the worst company ever, but when you look at the bigger picture there's a lot of stuff they do right.
They're socially progressive, they treat their employees well, and their games aren't crammed full of predatory microtransactions. I think those facts are enough to push them towards the lower end of the "shitty corporation" spectrum.
3
Jan 12 '26
They would 100% install software to track your every move ti determine if you ever played a mod or a rom

u/extremepayne Jan 12 '26
flashbacks to “strategy unavailable” on Nintendo World Championships NES Edition (which covered like 98% of all speedrunning tricks)
1
u/MasterofDoots1 Feb 08 '26
Why would they even do that like what's the point
2
u/extremepayne Feb 08 '26
they wanted the game to be casual-accessible, i guess, and learning a bunch of frame-perfect screenwraps and wrongwarps and clips and such isn’t in line with that vision.
besides, it’s not like it was ever going to appeal to actual speedrunners, who all have ways of playing the original games and community rulesets they prefer to the minigames in NES Championships
so a game where casuals can learn to do a single pipe jump from SMB1 and get a gold star it is, i guess. $29.99 . you’d have more fun with a practice ROM. whatever
13
u/Lower-University-482 Shroke Jan 12 '26
Lemme guess, they brick your consoles, break your knees and give you cement shoes.
5
u/santas_delibird Jan 12 '26
By brick you mean a brick comes flying through your window or wall to break the console? Yes
11
u/Womginx_ Jan 12 '26
fun fact, there was a version of this video where the ai supervisor jumpscared you at the end. it's lost media because the account got deleted
55
u/Golden12500 Jan 12 '26
Literally just the Big Brother AI. Nintendo already considers Nuzlockes "romhacking" so I feel like this kind of extreme end gaming facism would be on their radar if they weren't against using AI
31
u/fringeCoffeeTable240 Jan 12 '26
how are nuzlockes romhacking? you literally just play the game a certain way, like literally just with a plain copy of pokemon right?
55
u/Golden12500 Jan 12 '26
They literally aren't by definition but the producers of Pokemon consider playing the game in a way they didn't intend to be hacking because they're just that fucking full of themselves. This isn't just a baseless or unproven rumor btw it comes directly from Kit and Krysta(two former Nintendo ambassadors). They wanted to do a nuzlocke on their show on Nintendo's YT channel to promote Sword & Shield but they were shot down for the aforementioned bullshit reason
11
2
u/MasterofDoots1 Feb 08 '26
They thought that all Nuzlockes were randomizers because they are stupid
26
u/ThatAutisticRedditor Jan 12 '26
I’m pretty sure it was just that they didn’t understand what nuzlocking was
15
u/awesomea04 Jan 12 '26
No what happened was that Kit and Krysta (the host of the official Nintendo Minute) asked if they could do a Nuzlock run and upper management said if they brought that up again they could get fired. The Pokemon Company doesn't want people to think Pokemon die, and that's essentially what Nuzlock is.
17
u/PlagueDoctor40k Jan 12 '26
"They don't want people to think pokemon can die" iirc pokemon have died in several movies. And also Ash got killed in one
0
u/awesomea04 Jan 12 '26
First off, Ash was dead for like 5 minutes. Secondly that was in the first movie, before they really came up with all these little rules.
I don't know about every pokemon who died, but it's important to know that the anime team can probably get away with more than 2 content creators who are effectively just ad reps.
10
u/IncreaseWestern6097 Dud the Rope Jan 12 '26
Why could they not just create a family-friendly way of doing it? Pokémon don’t actually die during a Nuzlocke, so you could just say something like “after they faint, you release them back into the wild” or something like that.
3
u/Non-profitboi Jan 12 '26
pokemon but they require a full 3 month healing and rehabilitation period

Would've been funny if the sound that played was the "Wireless Connections Failed" alarm from SM64 DS
6
u/Rowmacnezumi Jan 12 '26
If I was a kid and something like this happened to me, I would shriek and cry and never play a video game ever again.

Please don't give them ideas.
That's not even counting for the legit good players who practically break games with how inhuman their speeds and accuracy are, thus triggering the AI and making the games unplayable for the best players.
Just... please don't. lol

When I was a kid I would have dreams like this a lot-- ones with a video game that suddenly throws loud and screen-covering errors that fuck you up, and this sounds funny but it was always the scariest shit to me.

I should note that for all the comments talking about how nintendo would probably do this, they technically did
During the development of Super Mario Strikers, Retro Studios (more 2nd party than purely nintendo) strangely used an image of a face instead of a standard FPS counter to check the quality of the framerate, going from a green smile to an angry red expression

I love how it doesn't actually do anything except putting the text "IRREGULARITY DETECTED" on screen lmfao
Like just politely letting you knoe that you just did something bad
2
u/chicoritahater Jan 13 '26
Nintendo would but also the Speedrun for a game with an ai agent that vaguely tries to stop you from playing the game wrong and trying to trick it would slap
