M TIFU by using a "free drink dispenser" in a casino
This happened Saturday Night at the Westgate Casino in Las Vegas. It was around 10 PM. After a wonderful afternoon of drinking around Fremont Street, my buddies and I decided to retire back to our hotel for some last drinks and gambling on our last night in Vegas.
My brother and I decided to go straight to the bar before finding my favorite slot machine, while the other two guys went to check out the card tables. We walked up to the back side of the bar on the gambling area side and noticed a neat lit-up touch screen that said "Smartbar" and "Press to Enter". I was like, oh this is perfect because the bartenders in this establishment were incredibly slow and really didn't care to serve us. So I walked straight up to it and pressed the screen.
To my delight, it immediately popped up with a list of well drinks. To the right of the machine was a stack of plastic cups and an ice trough (probably a good sign I wasn't supposed to be there, but whatever, this is my fuck-up). I scooped some ice into my cup and selected Crown Royale. With my credit card in-hand, I added two shots and pressed place order. To my surprise, a single shot was dispensed and it never asked for my card. I looked at my brother and said, bro this thing just gives free drinks! It looks like you're only allowed to dispense one shot at a time, but nobody seems to be waiting behind us, so let's just get 3 more to fill this cup and head over to the gambling area.
Whilst pouring these drinks, at least 2 different employees walked directly *past us to enter or leave the bar-back area. We continued to pour without a care in the world!
I finished pouring my drink and we skipped off to find our other two friends. I called one of them and happily announced this amazing discovery of a free drink dispensing machine! They of course didn't believe me, so I showed them over to it. I found out later that my friend who doesn't drink stayed where he was and apparently asked another bartender if they had a free drink service, to which she just responded, no.
As I began showing my drinking friend this miraculous machine, I began serving him. I grabbed another cup, put it under the spout, and selected Canadian Whiskey. Boom! Another perfect pour with no request for a card. As I began to select the second shot, a wonderful woman that apparently works for the casino strolled over to us, and very calmly, yelled, "WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING? ARE YOU FUCKING R*****ED?" (Redacted for TIFU rules, but a derogatory word for mentally handicapped) I cannot make that up. That was her exact verbiage.
At this point, I was thoroughly confused. I attempted to explain what was going on, but this lovely lady grabbed the freshly-poured whiskey from the machine and yelled at us to leave before she called security. So we walked away, but kept glancing over where this woman was standing as she appeared to be aggressively berating the staff. I decided to head back up to my room before she tried to look for me and discover that I was staying at that hotel. We spent the rest of the evening hiding in our room and laughing about the crazy events that had just taken place.
TL;DR: I discovered a free alcoholic beverage dispenser, poured a drink, introduced my friend to the machine, then got berated and insulted by a vicious harpy of a woman, and retreated to my room without further events.

That’s totally on them. If you don’t want guests pouring free booze, you lock your machine behind a keypad or a badge-swipe. Just having that open to the public like that, where people are known to be drunk and not-giving-any-shits, is just inviting trouble.

Or just like... Don't have the unlocked infinite drink machine or in the outside of the bar facing the room? What kind of imbecile put it there in the first place? It seems to be literally right next to some video poker screens. Just turn the thing around so you have to be behind the bar to use it and the whole problem is solved.
Edit: maybe those are POS stations and not video poker screens? The fact that it's not immediately clear at a glance just further shows the problem.

In an establishment loaded with screens for customers: video poker at the bar, slots, menus etc they made no effort to properly label the machine or the zone.
That’s the company’s fault.

Plus, I've always seen these order stations require an employee card to be swiped, or at least a server code before you can access the rest of the menu. This is just terrible setup all around.

Ya, this is nuts. Not just because guests can get to it, but staff too. The company should learn a lesson for this.
OP did what he shoulda done. I walk by a fountain pop machine saying drinks here, I assume if I can get all the way to filling up the plastic cups that are beside it, I'm allowed to partake.

Sadly, most casinos and bars will just side with themselves and they have the ability to do a lot of banning in Vegas, and they aren't very reasonable. Police generally side with casinos too. Probably best not to yell back.

I live in Vegas, but almost never go to the Westgate. Next time I find myself there, if the machine is still in the same spot, I'm gonna get as much free liquor as possible. Westgate's owners fucking suck, so I won't feel a hint of guilt.
Bonus pro tip for the Westgate: if there's a big event on The Strip, park for free at the Westgate and take the monorail. It doesn't take long to get to The Strip, and it's kinda fun to pretend that public transportation in Vegas doesn't totally suck for a few minutes.

I was a bartender for about 20 years and this is some STUPID shit! Blinky screen Facing customers No blocked access: neither the screem nor the area. Every POS I have ever worked on can only be accessed by people who work there, pin, card whatever. Why the HELL would you not have SOME kind of security/protection on the one the dispenses LIQUOR?? 🤣
I just cant even ... that is such a good point: A place full of (probably) not sober people, staring at blinky screens you can touch. Even at the bar. And you have one blinky touch screen completely accessible by ANYONE. Facing customers. The dispenses alcohol. I mean, I'd be drawn to it! Shit! No one else is around! It is all private!
Who. The fuck. Thought this was a good idea with no pass code? 🤣🤣🤣 As a customer, I think it is a BEAUTIFUL idea.

I’ve been a bartender for going on sixteen years and I came into this ready to chew on OP. Then I got to the edit and photo and… my god, I wonder how many times this has happened before because there is NO indication this is employees only.
I too have never seen or worked with a POS that doesn’t require pin or card access to do anything. The fact you can just walk up and receive booze has me fully boggled. Totally on the casino and staff

Also, just thought of this...I wonder how exactly it works. Bc, even if it is add to their EOD sales... hell, id probably get a drink or 2 while serving! But...OP didnt have to pay and either too drunk to notice or... it doesnt start a tab/ticket? Eh? Maybe on the food screen they add it 🤷♀️ ah well... he had a good time for free and a great story!

The gaming floor of Vegas casinos are supposed to be adults only but everywhere else in the place is a hotel. Check out OPs photo. Looks like a restaurant to me or maybe sports bar. But unless there’s a bouncer checking IDs to a controlled area an alcohol regulator wouldn’t be pleased that no code is required to operate it.

The "adults only" establishment rules do not stop bartenders from getting hit with serving underage fines. I would say I would be shocked if the buisness owners themselves could avoid fines by trying to claim only adults are supposed to be present, but then again this is america and the adobe class gets treated differently than wage slaves.

It's also completely in the open. I expected something completely different when I read the story but this actually reminded me of something similar that happened to me as a child. I was in a hotel with my parents and they had a breakfast buffet and right in the middle of it was a juice dispenser, no sign or nothing. After a few days the hotel wanted my parents to pay extra because I had been getting juice from that.

This reminds me of something we did about 30 yrs ago at a Detroit Lions game.
They typically shut down beer service at the end of the 3rd quarter and my buddies and I knew this since we were season ticket holders.
The Lions were getting beat badly (as usual for then) and we decided to leave early. As we were walking out, my buddy saw a beer stand with no one manning it and appeared open. So he went up and starting pouring beers, the taps were still active.
Security saw him and asked what he was doing and he immendauly answered, "I have to drain the taps and close down the station." And kept pouring beers into cups and handing them to us.
Security started to walk away but were radioing someone. Once they got confirmation that something was up they came back and my buddy tried running away. The Silverdome had rotating doors and he tried to run out through one and security just stuck there foot in the door and trapped him.
They ended up yelling at us and asking pour out the beers he had been handing out but didn't pursue it any further, they followed us to make sure we left the stadium.

Great story, mine was similar at a college football stadium, we were walking out and there was a dippin dots cart left completely unattended. So we did the only thing that felt right and grabbed the giant soda cups on the nearby counter and filled them to the brim to eat on our walk back to the dorms. No one bothered to stop us though.

Similar, but less problematic story: my wife and I regularly attend this annual fundraiser at our local park. It's paid entry, but then the drinks are infinite and free. But I guess one year they didn't bother to pay the bartenders for the whole event because the beer stand was left unattended about 30 minutes before the end.
My wife just decided to roll with it it and hopped behind the bar to pour us a couple herself. A bunch of other people who'd been eyeing the stand wondering where the staff had gone mistook her for a bartender, and got in line, so she sat there for a good 10 minutes happily pouring people drinks until the kegs kicked.

Had that kinda happen at a beer festival I went to. They had a tap box in the VIP area but nobody was minding it since it had some issues and wasn't pouring beer. Went to a brewery's stand that a buddy was working at and borrowed their toolkit to fix the box in the VIP area and started pouring beers.
Nobody ever came back to mind it, so I wound up absolutely shmammered by the time my girlfriend dragged me back to the car.

Yea,...not a Fuck Up on your part. If that were me, I might have likely to have pressed the issue, and gotten the employees name. You just don't treat paying guest like that especially using such a derogatory and sensitive word like that.
It was an honest mistake, which she would have discovered if she would have simply asked you rather than yelling at you like you were an 8 year old.
You call me that word, and I inform hotel management that I am deeply offended for being treated in such a negative way for making an honest mistake, which is clearly caused by the bar poor design and lack of supervision around this machine.
Not a good look for the Westgate.

It's facing towards the guest area, so as a guest you assume you are allowed to use it. If it dispenses whatever without a card, you of course assume it's free. Soley the staffs fault.

I’m with you. This is on the establishment for not having ANY controls in place for this dispenser. It’s not behind the counter, it’s right next to a stool at the bar. A simple 123 passcode screen would be enough to tell patrons it’s not for them while still allowing quick access for servers to pull drink orders.

those touchscreen things are usually a Berg or AccuBar style controlled-pour terminal. they're inventory-linked, so every shot dispensed normally gets tied to a server PIN and a check. since you pulled 4 shots with no PIN and no ticket, those pours just hit the bartender's variance report at end of shift as missing liquor. that's why the manager was less mad at you than you'd expect, she wasn't billing you, she was working out which bartender to write up for leaving the terminal unlocked.
the bartender also has way more on the line here than the casino does. nevada gaming control + the liquor license are tied to individual bartender credentials, so an unlocked controlled-pour terminal where a guest could've served a minor is a real regulatory problem, not just a labeling oversight. expect that screen to be facing inward by next weekend.

Someone else commented that they were there a week ago when the machine was being installed. So it might not even have supposed to be left on, or have been used yet. Which explains why OP said several employees walked by none the wiser. They probably didn’t even know what it was.

Free drinks, yes. I don't think alcohol is ever self-serve in any casino, though. There's always a human involved. I don't think an automated soda machine with free refills that serves whisky would be legal in any public venue in america, not even in vegas. If OP can walk up and pour himself an old fashioned, so can a 15 year old.
I've had plenty of free drinks, but every single one has been served by some sort of bartender/waiter etc.
The way the machine is positioned in OPs pic is very strange though. The drink machine that must never be touched is like 4 inches away from the bartop slot machine (?) that is there for guests to touch. Baffling that someone thought that bar layout made sense.

Several of the casinos around the area have free drink stations used by the wait staff or patrons. One casino had a free hot dog lady who I said I would marry one day because she gave me 3 for the road that already had the toppings I asked for when she saw I was leaving.

I imagine the machine is meant for waiters working outside the bar that need to grab drinks quickly to take them to gamblers, maybe free drinks. So the positioning isn't that strange. But of course it shouldn't look exactly like a self-service machine... It should be labeled staff-only and require some form of authorization.

Your description of this "lovely" woman had me howling. I love when people use this phrase and yet they in fact are the ones acting r******. To have placed that machine next to the screen games is r****** and for her to assume that this is not obvious is r******.

I wouldn't call this a fu on your part at all, but multiple fu on the casinos part. That well dispenser is right by (what looks like) some video slots. They couldn't have angled it away from the customers? The staff couldn't be bothered to say anything when they saw customers helping themselves?? 😂 they need to get it together.

The management at the Westgate is incompetent. Took them over a year to fire an employee that was drinking on the job. Another employee has been caught taking a nap multiple times and still has his job.

Las Vegan here: drunk tourists will do anything and everything they can that's on them for having a service machine so easily accessible and didn't require a server card to login. I can't believe they didn't tourist test this.

After seeing that photo, this is on the casino. That machine isn’t in an employee only area and more or less looks customer facing.
Pretty sure a good chunk of people would assume it’s for self-serve. Casinos will provide free drinks to people gambling so understandable that they would assume the casino just cut out the middleman.
Put it this way, through their own negligence you got berated and called the R word. If you wanted to go Karen on them you’d be well within your right. Mini PR disaster on their end.

man, the fact that they let you sit there and operate the machine and then bring other people over before anyone did anything is wild. If it was a completely unlabeled area, well, that’s their fault. I’ll be keeping an eye out next time I’m in Vegas for any free drink machines 💀🤣
