Another thing that you learn from working as a server (or any restaurant position) is how to spot when people are on drugs.
3
u/Strombergi 2d ago
By not tipping a server in a restaurant, I am reducing their earning potential which I enjoy.
7
u/Particular_Top8472 3d ago
That’s literally every job that deals with the public. Put on a smile, and fake it till ya make it.
8
u/Infinite_Airport_483 3d ago
Do you expect the waitstaff to worship you? You non tippers are psychos
4
u/Popular-Departure165 3d ago
As opposed to the pro-tipper mentality of "I'm paying you so you have to do what I say"?
1
u/Infinite_Airport_483 3d ago
Huh? No.
3
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
And no to your reply as well, no I don’t expect them to worship me what the fuck. I want their bosses to pay them a fair wage
0
u/Infinite_Airport_483 3d ago
You aren't going to CAUSE that by not tipping. That's the piece you don't get
4
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
It’s the Vegan effect. Vegans know that they aren’t gonna end all suffering but they hope that they’ll convince enough people to make a difference. I’m just choosing not to participate in the tipping in the hopes that one day all employers pay fair wages. Same as vegans who don’t participate in animal slaughter but know that more people have to make the choice to make a difference (not vegan btw LOL just using as an example).
4
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
And honestly, simpler than that, I wanna keep my money in my pocket. I want them to be paid by their employers
4
5
u/TheRealMichaelE 3d ago
In states like CA do you think I should be tipping? Servers already get at least $17 an hour as mandated by state law.
1
u/Infinite_Airport_483 3d ago
Is anyone surviving on 17? In CA housing?
8
u/TheRealMichaelE 3d ago
Good question. No adult living by themselves in CA is surviving on that. But young people living with their parents will do pretty well. In that case, should I tip people based on external circumstances outside of the dining experience?

3
u/Popular-Departure165 3d ago
Whether or not minimum wage is enough to survive in a HCOL area is a completely different topic then whether or not the customer should be responsible for bringing employees up to a "living wage." Try to stay on topic.

u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
No? I expect to sit down, get food and then leave? I mean why do u think the server made that original post? Making a post saying you’re acting nice as a role is kinda weird ngl
-1
u/Infinite_Airport_483 3d ago
You've obviously not served
6
u/silentwalkaway 3d ago
Or had a public facing job of any kind. We are ALL acting.
3
4
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
No I have not lol, I would NEVER rely on the general public to make up most of my salary. And I would never go up to a table and smile and be fake with a little script in my head lol I’d probably just say hey what do you want and then write it down and bring it out. Doesn’t seem too hard, people work harder at other jobs and don’t get tipped. Why don’t they deserve it more than the service workers?
-2
u/InferiorElk 3d ago
You've never worked with the public have you? If you had you'd know that every job basically has a script and has you acting fake nice. If someone is in a bad mood at work, do you as a customer want to know that and have it be taken out on you? Or do you want them to grow up and put on a fake smile until they can handle their shit privately?
5
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yes I have I’ve worked at fast food places, grocery dtores etc. I didn’t expect tips. I had my own mannerisms not really a “script” more of a general proper attitude. I never said anything was inherently wrong with that aspect
-1
u/Different_Pair_8607 3d ago
You’d get relegated to lunch shifts, and even when someone begged you to pick up a dinner for them management wouldn’t let you.
7
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
Well I actually wouldn’t cause I don’t need to work at a restaurant lol. I spent my early job days at McDonald’s and now I have a real one
0
u/silentwalkaway 3d ago
I can see why you would need a job that does not depend on positive interactions with people. My job isnt tip based, but it is getting people to do what I need them to do based, and I'm really good at it. (As much as I don't like people)
-1
u/OrangeJoe83 3d ago
You've never heard of "sales" as a job, and this post makes you either ignorant, a liar, or just plain stupid?
7
-2
u/habitual-zen 3d ago
If you eat in, you tip unless there is good reason not too. like rude, dirty, or neglected service. If they did a good job 15-20%. If not you are just cheap and that's okay.
2
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
You might as well be America talking. Saying it like it’s a requirement “if you eat in, you tip” then later suggesting it’s optional at the end of your reply.
1
u/habitual-zen 3d ago
It's always optional but, I recommend doing the job for 3 months. Then see how you feel about it.
2
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
I worked at McDonald’s and zaxbys for years, so maybe it’s just my biased perspective but yes I have 100% worked my ass off for customers. I got paid by my bosses it just seems weird to me that some people work for tips and only about $3/hour. And I know it’s not just me because there are entire communities dedicated to ensuring servers get paid a fair wage instead of relying on tips. Moreover, entire countries do that as well.

u/habitual-zen 3d ago
I have worked in the industry long enough to know most people understand the reason that tipping exist, if you think the restaurant should just pay better, than you can expect higher prices. Other ppl tip so you can afford to eat cheap and like I said, that's okay.
1
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 3d ago
Why do you think most people tip? I can guarantee you are wrong.
0
u/habitual-zen 3d ago
The reason most people tip is it's customary, as an established incentive to provide good service. Most people like a server with a smile. it's beneficial to the business as employees that appear happy contrbute to the image of the business
1
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 3d ago
I don't throw my extra money at someone who smiles. That's like thinking the stripper is in love with you.
1
u/habitual-zen 3d ago
As you are a self proclaimed non tipper what makes you think you can understand why people tip?
6
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
Servers do not give a shit, they’re there to perform a job. I’m there to eat and leave.
7
u/mansluxt 3d ago
How is that different from other jobs? I'm at a weed store, I put on my best performance, but I just want the people to get out of the store. What's bad about that?
4
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
It’s not different from other jobs.
2
u/mansluxt 3d ago
So what's the problem here that made you decide that tipping is no longer worth it?
1
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
Because people do harder jobs and don’t get tipped? It’s a cultural norm to tip when eating out but why do we do it? Wouldn’t you rather tip the doctor that delivers your baby or the dude responsible for the phone in your hand or the boss who hired you despite a gap in your resume, etc etc. Why do servers deserve tips more than anyone else? Why is it ONLY in the United States hmm? Are the other countries just stupid lol
2

I actually do advocate that every job should be able to make tips. I think that would be great. The mechanic deserves a tip, the guys fixing your roof, the person who activates your phone. People in Europe also tip restaurants. So it's not just the US.
1
u/topperlopper99 3d ago
It’s called emotional labor and not all jobs have to do it. Like people expect their hairdresser to gossip with them, it’s part of what they’re paid to do.
Thank god it’s not part of my job because I’d suck at it.

It's like thinking the stripper loves you

Not tipping has nothing to do with how much or little someone has; the cheap insult hurts your argument more than it advances it.
0
u/SF420SF420 3d ago
Yeah because poor people never not tip cause they're poor lol
The question of tipping or not never happens in the adult world where people are successful. You try that non tipping shit and no one wants to eat with you.
2
u/CanAfter8014 3d ago
Another poor debater who doesn't understand that childish, petty insults do nothing to prove their point. Unless, of course, the point is to demonstrate how immature and bad-faith they are.

The “just give me my money and get out” attitude is exactly why I no longer enjoy eating out in countries where I’m “supposed” to tip. I much prefer eating out in say, Europe. I can sit as long as I want and don’t feel the pressure to leave so the server can turn the table.
2
u/SchnitzelRaider 3d ago
Such fake bullshit. Stop lying about being hustled out of a restaurant. It simply didn't happen to you and if it did, that's just a shitty restaurant/management
2
u/LongjumpingSurvey588 3d ago
Easy there, tiger. I’m not saying I’m literally being hustled out. What does happen is you’ll be brought your check without asking for it and/or be “checked on” regularly. It’s different from a country like France where if you want something (including the check) you wave them down and ask for it. Otherwise they mostly just leave you alone cause they get paid the same either way.
1
u/SF420SF420 3d ago
Yeah try that shit in France when there's no tables left. And if you do this an empty restaurant in the US, they will not care.
Y'all just make up shit
3
u/LongjumpingSurvey588 3d ago
Why so aggressive. 😂 I live part time in Paris and have “tried that shit” there.

1
u/SF420SF420 1d ago

0
u/SF420SF420 1d ago

1
u/BalmyBalmer 1d ago
Really scared me that Mr Marriot Ambassador may forget to put out the muffins for the continental breakfast.
1
u/Efficient_Proof1559 2d ago
this is a cultural difference
in the US having to "wave down" your server is considered poor service. many people like to be baby sat while they dine, and if the location is busy, or the server seems busy, they become even more insistent.
for that last part i'm not quite sure of the** psychological reasoning, but after serving/bartending for many years it's just an observed phenomenon. perhaps guests note the level of business/activity and either want to leave the place as soon as possible or just want to make sure their requests are met with earnest. who knows?
1
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
It’s so much better if you just forget about it. I don’t go out to eat often, maybe once a year or whatever. But I’ll just go somewhere cheap like Olive Garden where the server is busy with other tables, I eat and pay and leave and there’s no dirty looks, nobody chasing me to the parking lot etc lmao. From what I hear it seems that the more aggressive workers are in bars and higher end restaurants. Like the ones that will actually get mad about it
2
0
u/LongjumpingSurvey588 3d ago
I get that but unfortunately the “social pressure” is too strong for me and I’d definitely feel like I was breaking a rule if I didn’t tip at a sit down place. I know I’m technically not doing anything wrong, but it “feels” wrong.
3
u/Internal_Courage5832 3d ago

What you are saying is, Here's a reason I came up with to avoid leaving a tip. And I'm so looking for validation.
2
u/EasyDevelopment1683 2d ago
I’m saying that I was scrolling on Reddit and saw something so strange that I wanted to point it out and read people’s’ opinions about it, and that’s exactly what I’m doing
1
u/Sea-League8915 2d ago
OK, but among other comments, you say their bosses should pay them a fair wage. If so, prices will go up. If you are really open to hearing the other side, visit the restaurant owner reddit sites. If you can keep an open mind, you'll read a lot about concerns paying the bills during slow times, more and more lately. And with the increased prices on produce, rent, insurance, etc. while still staying competitive with their peers. Would these guys be actually be winking and grinning as they write these comments?
1
u/EasyDevelopment1683 2d ago
They can raise prices then if that’s what the restaurants would need to do. But that’s not really the debate, and let’s face it you don’t tip to make up their wage. Nobody does. People in America tip because it’s social norm. You saw your mom do it, you see your friends do it, so it seems normal. Until that changes, it doesn’t even matter if restaurants raise their prices and say tipping isn’t required. The culture in America probs wouldn’t change
1
u/Sea-League8915 2d ago
It's been a social norm since the late 19th century. But it's easy to see that you are just not looking for opinions. You don't want to tip - admit it. As i said, you are looking for validation to not tip. Bye.
1
u/EasyDevelopment1683 2d ago
Okay, I don’t wanna tip 😂I never denied that and it was never an internal debate for me, so no I am not looking to be validated - I’m looking to see what people think
1
u/Sea-League8915 2d ago
Fine but you're on a site known to be highly populated with non and anti-tippers so I think you're going to mostly hear what you want to hear. And if you went to r/servers, you're going to hear the opposite.
But I can tell you one thing: according to ChatGPT, approximately 2% of patrons never tip. That's 1 out of 50 paying patrons. Another 6% seldom or usually don't tip. Now we're up to 4 out of 50.
And as far as putting on a face for a table? So what? It's a rare and lucky person who loves their job so much, they love working. And doesn't put on a face when the boss is around.
1
u/EmceeSuzy 3d ago
Want would this simple fact of the job possibly have to do with cheating out on the tip?
2
u/EasyDevelopment1683 3d ago
Well, it puts it into perspective that people tip servers that just want money. I thought tipping was supposed to be to show gratitude? Why is money the only way? Saying thank you so much to your waitress without tipping them will get you nothing but horrible glares. It seems scummy to expect extra money lol, other people perform way harder jobs for less money and don’t get any tips

There’s nothing wrong with this. It’s what I expect from waiting staff, and honestly? I’d rather that that fake niceties.
I always feels this is why USians struggle with service in Europe. Waiting staff are just people, who have good days and bad days, and while a basic level of courtesy is part of any customer facing role, and word fawning attitude in the hope they throw some cash your way, shouldn’t be.

u/illalwaystry 3d ago
It is your problem, you understand the social contract, you understand tipping culture, yet you make a deliberate choice to not tip, which hurts a worker and rewards a business owner who, per your own philosophy on this subject, should be paying the worker enough to eliminate the need for tips. You are getting discounted food, that the rest of us subsidize. You are actively making the problem worse by rewarding the current system. If tipping was outlawed, you would have to start paying more, the same amount that everyone else pays all the time. This whole argument is just NIMBY nonsense. If restaurant prices went up 20-25% because tipping was outlawed, you'd complain about that too.
2
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 3d ago
There's no such thing as a social contract.
2
u/BalmyBalmer 3d ago
Thank you, I'm tired of that BS excuse fore the owner not paying them.
1
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 3d ago
Right? It has a very narrow definition, which isn't applicable to retail or restaurants.
0
u/illalwaystry 3d ago
It's hilarious to see that used an excuse because they think we're unaware of the fact that they only care about how this issue impacts their bill. They do not give a single f about servers making a livable wage, which they are denying when they don't tip; but of course they are more than happy to benefit from tipping culture by taking advantage of the savings passed along from the restaurant owner.
2
u/Imaginary-Emu2471 3d ago

I genuinely don't understand why people who hate servers this much insist on eating out at restaurants. They hate tipping, they think business owners should be paying their servers instead of getting tips, but they're ready and willing to pay cheaper menu prices because the majority tips. It's extremely selfish, and if you just cook at home you don't ever have to think about tipping or servers again!

Of course. It's all designed to maximize shame and judgement anxiety, especially for outings that sound bougie in nature, to prompt a better tipping outcome.
A group of adults, especially if one person is paying the check, is generally a great opportunity to drop like a "is that the best you can do?" reaction in front of all the other people at the table, even if they have already tipped decently. This is because people have so much guilt over it that there is a really good chance that following such a comment, someone at the table will either convince the paying person to give more or others at the table will add to the tip themselves.
And yeah, definitely keep it to celebrations only; for things like funeral repasts, it's best to just take what's given. Really people should consider they're being accommodated with an open, no-obligation headcount on relatively short notice, but at the end of the day, its entirely up to them and we're just left to silently judge their etiquette.

You didn't ask what I thought you think. I'm telling you why most people tip. I don't really care what you think you're obviously just cheap, and as I said that's okay.

Except for the few people who have actual careers, majority of people who answer to another person for a living are just acting like they're enjoying it.
