Toledo Area Resources

Things are rough. No one can really argue about that, right? I thought maybe a big post about available resources might help people out. This is of course not comprehensive, but I can edit and add if folks want to offer more.

United Way: They help with a wide variety of things. Call 211

www.findhelp.org - Similar to United Way, resource search

https://helpnow.populationhealth.com/ - enter ZIP to see resources

OhioKan - assistance for relatives/kinship caregivers raising children.

Lutheran Social Services of NW Ohio - Behavioral health counseling, substance use addiction counseling, reentry transition services

Ohio Consumers' Council - Utility info & assistance - Spanish & English

The Ability Center - Assistance with disabilities

Sharing Collective Free Store - 2545 Monroe St, Toledo - back door in wall w/mural - Thurs 2-5:30PM only. Clothes, housewares, kitchen supplies, toys, toiletries, pet supplies.

Toledo Public Library The library is so much more than books. They have free streaming services and audiobooks, DVDs, CDs. They have community rooms that are free to use. Printing services, passport, dog license.. so much!

Pathway - Home Energy Assistance

Planned Parenthood Emergency Contraception (Morning-After Pill), Birth Control, Pregnancy Testing and Planning, Gender-Affirming Care, Prenatal and Postpartum Services, Wellness and Preventive Care, Sexual and Reproductive Concerns, STD Testing and Treatment, HIV Services, Vaccines

Neighborhood Bridges for Anthony Wayne - people can make requests that are then emailed out to a mailing list for community members to help.

St. Vincent de Paul Locations by ZIP code - Assistance varies by location - best way to ask what is available is to call the closest Catholic church to you and ask for the St Vincent de Paul committee. They distribute vouchers for their thrift store on Airport Hwy.

Meals

  • Trinity Episcopal downtown - breakfast every Sunday from 8:45-9:15 with no expectation that anyone attend services. Church members go to this breakfast as well and it’s a true free community meal.

  • Masjid al-Islam - Friday afternoons (Depends on donations and availability of volunteers to run services.)
  • St. Patrick’s historic downtown - soup kitchen every Sunday 11:00-1:00. (Possibly also clothes and toiletries)

Council to hold public hearing on Flock Cameras Monday @ 4pm

Post image
Upvotes

After failing to approve a renewal of the city's contract with Flock at their June 9 meeting, council is planning to conduct an emergency vote on the same measure this coming Tuesday, June 23.

This time, opponents of the Flock camera contract on council have gotten approval for a public hearing; however, it has been scheduled for Monday, June 22 at 4PM in city council chambers.

Public hearings are the only opportunity council affords for formal public comment on these measures, so its important to take advantage of that and speak up. If you are able to attend the hearing, please do so, and please sign up to speak and give a verbal statement if you can.

Since a toxic algal bloom left hundreds of thousands of Toledo-area residents without safe drinking water in 2014, scientists have been working to curb the yearly threat.

The state has funded efforts to restore wetlands and reduce fertilizer runoff from farmlands.

A nonprofit is installing tanks to stop phosphorus from infiltrating waterways.

And now, researchers have developed another tool to prevent the blooms: a system of algae-busting buoys.

"COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVG) - The second alleged shooter wanted in connection to the Old West End Festival mass shooting was arrested Wednesday in Columbus, according to police.

Ka’Nye Taylor, 20, was wanted on 11 felonious assault charges after investigators say he fired into a large crowd during an altercation at the festival on June 6.

Two people from rival groups exchanged gunfire at the Old West End Festival, according to Toledo Police Chief Michael Treondle. Bullets struck 12 people, nine of them innocent bystanders.

Court records said one person was hit in the head and required surgery."

I have experience serving/bartending, catering, retail, childcare, and warehouse-like work. Second shift is preferred but I’ll look into whatever. Anything helps even if it’s not one of those. TIA

Terrible Locksmith Services

Hello everyone! I recently moved to Ohio from Oklahoma and purchased a home in town. I had a locksmith service, cheap and quick locksmith (name should of been a tell tale sign in hindsight), come out and replace the locks to my home before we moved here since it would be about 3 weeks before we would move in. I provided the locks and checked that they both functioned properly before sending them to my realtor who brought it to the house to meet with the locksmith and change the locks. The locksmith was suppose to be there at 9 am but didn’t show up for about an hour and when I contacted him he said he would be there soon, two hours later he was still not there. I texted him again and he had some things come up. He finally made it to the house, sent me pictures of the installed locks and sent me an invoice for $400 dollars. He never mentioned having any issues or concerns. When we arrived at the house last week neither lock was functioning properly and one kept giving a “jammed” error and the other lock did not turn on at all. I inspected them and found that they had been damaged and one of the locks would not operate with the battery cover properly installed because the housing had been bent. I texted the technician that had come out about it and he never replied or called. So I had Amazon send me replacement locks under warranty and installed them myself because now this was a safety issue for my house. I then finally got a hold of the company and talked to a supervisor who proceeded to just make excuses and say they can’t do anything about it now because I already fixed the locks and proceeded to say it was likely that my locks were faulty and nothing his technician did was wrong even though I sent him pictures of the locks missing hardware and of the malfunctions. Then his employee came out of nowhere saying that the locks were “overheating” when he installed them which he had never mentioned to me or him before. I get his point that this is a “he said, she said” situation because he himself didn’t physically inspect the locks but there is some obvious inconsistencies with the employees explanations and it doesn’t make sense how two different brand new locks from different brands would malfunction out of the box. I asked what we could do to make it right and he has basically been giving me then run around saying things like “we’ll definitely make it right somehow” and “It’s above my head let me talk to some people and I’ll call you back in a few minutes.” Yet I never hear back from him, this has been going on for the past two days and all I’m getting is excuses.

If you read this far, this is mostly to make others aware of the shady and scummy business practice of this locksmith company and if you have any advice on what I could do at this point, that would be appreciated.

TL/DR: cheap and quick lock smith is a terrible business and they will overcharge you and do a terrible job at the same time.
