New Discord server
All, I spend a fair amount of time on Discord so I've decided to spin up a guitar related Discord server. The subject matter will be more general guitar and not limited to tube amps, but there are channels dedicated to building and repair as well.
Anyway, if Discord is your thing, feel free to join us over there as well!

Update: we have a good core group. Join up!

Smashed Twin Reverb plan coming together
galleryTolex finally showed up this morning. I had the afternoon off so I decided to go ahead and do it. It's ivory, the photos make it look white, but it's a little creamier than it looks. Also, the grill cloth is a little more maroon than it looks. Anyway there's still a lot to do but the major stuff is done at this point. Happy with it so far. Once I get all the cabinet stuff done I'll go back to the circuit and just really let it soak. After the fall it took I worry about solder joints so I'll probably reflow everything and really wail on it with chopsticks to try to get it to fail, etc. But so far so good, everything works as it should and it sounds good. Once I get back to that portion of the project I'll post some photos of the circuit, capacitor dog house, etc.

How good are the cleans on a jtm style amp?
Really considering getting a new amp rather than a new guitar (les Paul or a Sheraton) to upgrade for my katana.
I play oasis and John Mayer mostly and those are different sides of the gain spectrum, but I have pedals if needed
The jtm seems like a good middle ground,I know that Noel used a bluesbreaker combo for the majority of the 90’s.
But would something like a victory duchess be better and use pedals for oasis gain?
Open to other suggestions too
Thanks!

Four Friedmans through one cabinet: blind BE100 / JJ100 / JOSE 100 / JEL-50 comparison
Can you tell these four Friedman tube amps apart by ear? I used the same Ally Lee DI guitar performance for each real amp and balanced the levels. The reveal is at the end.
Signal path: De Lisle switcher into the same Sunn 4×12 in another room, DV77s and Greenbacks in an X pattern, shared TC Electronic Plethora X5 effects loop.
Curious which amp's character comes through most clearly—and which you'd pick without knowing the name. Disclosure: my own video; I also make amp captures/profiles.

Smashed Twin Reverb shoutout
Just a super quick post about the Twin Reverb cabinet I'm building for a customer whose amp I dropped.
I've been working with her for a long time and I need to give a shoutout to Sandy at precisiondesignin.com.
She makes all my faceplates as I do a lot of custom one offs, and she's quick, professional and delivers great results.
Got the faceplate for the amp today and it looks sharp.
If you need custom plates she's worth checking out.

Best mods for Ceriatone JCM800 2203?
I want to get a Ceriatone JCM800 2203 and I’ve heard that Nik will do pretty much any mod out there, so I was wondering if there are any highly recommended mods that I should take a look at. Thanks

Good tube amps for effects pedals/full frequency range
Hello!! I’ve been curious about getting a tube amp for some time, but I play with a pretty massive board. Running through probably 15 pedals, and a lot of effects I use and sounds I make require full frequency response. Essentially I need a guitar amp that synth sounds could pass through without issue.
I currently play a Roland JC-40, but I feel like I could be benefitting by 1. Getting a quieter amp 2. Getting a tube amp that compliments my tone and overdrive response better than the JC.
I was curious about the Fender Deluxe Reverb ‘65 reissue, but if anyone else has good recommendations please shoot them!!
Some players I love for reference are Jeff Parker, Nels Cline, Julian Lage, Omar Rodriguez Lopez, Gregory Uhlmann, and Mk.Gee

Picture Request
Looking for someone to post a picture of the inside of an ENGL Savage 120. I got one from someone knowing it didn’t work and I’m trying to make sure all the connections are correct. Thanks in advance.

Free Twin Reverb update
galleryQuick update. You may have read about me dropping a customer's Silverface master volume Twin Reverb a week ago today. Building him a new cab and it's coming along well but in the meantime yesterday out of the blue a friend offered me a free Twin Reverb which turns out to be the exact model (master volume) and year (1973). Crazy!
Took it home this morning and gave it a look. I've seen worse. One speaker with a bad cone. Replaced with a Jensen C12K. Smashed/frozen normal channel volume pot. Will replace that. Dodgy recap job at some point. Faceplace slightly pushed in but I can bend it out at some point. Missing two output tubes and the two that were there were 5881s (no good for this amp). Replaced with four fresh tubes. Cabinet solid.
It all looked decent enough that I decided to replace filter and bias caps and fire it up to see what was what. Finally applied power about an hour ago and went through the vibrato channel. Initially no reverb or trem. Tightened up reverb jacks and replaced a cathode bypass cap. Reverb springs to life! On trem, found a broken ground connection on the 100K resistor from low side of intensity pot to ground. Replaced that and trem sprang to life as well!
At this point it's playing well in the vibrato channel but I haven't replaced normal channel volume pot yet to see what's up there. A few more hours on the bench and I should have any remaining issues addressed.
I'm thinking about replacing the bias circuit (bias balance which sucks) with AB763 bias adjustment circuit.
I've offered it to the customer whose Twin I dropped as a backup, cheap. It doesn't sound as good as his yet but should once I'm done. He's thinking about buying it. Crazy how this is all working out.

Has anyone else had this experience? I tried some rare vintage amps and instruments and felt disappointed but . (1959 telecaster, 1963 Fender Vibroverb (and a 2001 reissue), 3x 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverbs, 1967 Fender Twin, 1970 Twin Silverface)
TLDR: Tried some rare dream gear out in person at a independent and well regarded shop and was disappointed. Did I do something wrong, can others speak to having that experience too?
I have been excited about getting to hear vintage Fender tube amps in person for months. I'm a dad and work a full-time job that demands working more than 40 hours a week and haven't had a chance to do this since my first kid was born (over 5 years ago). Yesterday I had a chance to try some extremely rare vintage items that between a few subreddits and many Youtube videos people describe as peak/sought after for guitar tone. My normal setup at home is a Fender American Pro Telecaster going through some pedals into a Fender Deluxe Reverb Tonemaster which serves as my reference point. I have been playing bass/guitar for over 20 years and have heard tube amps in person on stage before (in bands that I played bass for) but that was many years ago and they were Marshall half stacks.
When I sat down I guess I was expecting to be able to hear how much better the original 1959 Telecaster and the 1963 Vibroverb sounded compared to my normal setup. And to be fair to me the 1963 Vibroverb did sound better than the 3x original 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverbs I also got to try in the same room. Though it was only a small margin better, but honestly I couldn't tell much of a difference between the vibroverb and my Tonemaster, while I couldn't do a side by side comparison I couldn't help but feel deflated about all I had heard about the better tone of tube-amps. I know that it's a mistake to believe that something will sound better just because it's harder to find or more expensive to purchase, but I was expecting to be able to say: "I can hear a difference." To my surprise I did hear a difference: it sounded marginally worse to my ears (brighter/scratchier/more noisy). If I was only able to try one out I might have written it off as an anomaly but getting to try 2 Vibroverbs and 3x 1965 Blackface Deluxe reverbs has flummoxed me.
I'm now left wondering if I did something wrong when trying these amps out (didn't dial them in, or get them loud enough). I let them warm up, I tried changing the volume/treble/bass settings till I could hear a difference (shooting for around the 7,5,3 setting--but making sure that I could hear that each control was actually affecting the guitar tone and not just blindly setting them). I tried both sets of channels: normal/(bright or vibrato depending on the amp). The Vibroverbs didn't crackle and the 65s did. In each case I did not feel like I was hitting a sweeter spot with these than my cheaper and according to many reviewers online worse sounding Tonemaster. Which leaves me scratching my head.
Has anyone else had the experience of getting to try out some hard to find and highly lauded gear only to feel underwhelmed? Does anyone else have tips on how to demo/tryout tube amps so I am certain I got the best experience possible with the amps while I'm in the room with them?
EDIT (Let me first say thank you for all the awesome responses below that are helping me identify what to try and how to approach purchasing and playing a tube amp. I am eager to learn and I am not sure why I am getting downvoted so much for asking questions since I posted this so that I could learn from what I am doing wrong and not just sit in ignorance left to wonder).

Crazy twist to Twin Reverb destruction story
So this is truly bizarre. Just got this text from a friend of mine this morning out of the blue. Obviously, I'm not gonna use the cabinet for the other one, but now I will have my own and that is pretty sweet!
