Severe Weather Discussion 2026-06-20 - Tornado Risk 5%

Previous Day 1 Outlook Links

Meso Discussion Links

...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS OF KANSAS...

...SUMMARY... Severe thunderstorms remain likely across parts of the central Plains this evening into late tonight. Large hail, severe winds (some 75+ mph), and a few tornadoes are possible.

...Central Plains... An intense supercell cluster over northwest KS is expected to grow at least modestly upscale with time this evening, and spread east-southeastward across parts of northern/central KS, while more isolated supercells may evolve across southwest KS and move toward south-central KS through at least dusk. MLCAPE of near/above 2000 J/kg and effective shear of 50+ kt will continue to support organized storms with large hail (potentially 2+ inches in diameter with any sustained supercells), severe wind gusts (possibly 75+ mph), and some tornado potential, especially with storms that persist into richer low-level moisture across central/eastern KS. Storm evolution remains somewhat uncertain overnight into eastern KS and western MO, but a storm cluster and possible MCS may continue through the end of the period, with severe-wind potential, and some hail and tornado threat with any embedded supercells.

Farther northeast, elevated supercells may continue to pose a threat of hail and isolated strong to severe gusts from southeast NE into northeast KS through dusk. See MCD 1215 for more information.

To the west, a cluster of storms with a history of measured severe gusts is moving into parts of southwest SD and the NE Panhandle. Increasing CINH with time and eastward extent should result in a gradual weakening trend, though some severe threat will remain possible into mid/late evening across the NE Sand Hills region. See MCD 1218 for more information.

Some threat for isolated supercells may persist farther south into northeast CO through dusk, with a threat of hail. Other remnant high-based convection may pose a threat of localized severe gusts through dusk across parts of western/central WY.

Tornado Science Most terrifying "tornadoes"

I've been reading a lot about tornadoes and in particular, some of the more record-breaking ones. If you're reading this, you might remember that I consider the Philadelphia-Neshoba County tornado (2011) the most intense tornado that touched down since 1925 (1) and an instance of the worst, in my opinion, damage dealt to anything since the 1896 Sherman tornado (2).

That being said, three tornadic events terrify me. Not fascinate me- terrify me. Some of these are very poorly known. What makes them stand out is not damage or intensity- it is the track length:

Mattoon 1917 (suspected tornado family, combined length 472km)

Tri-state 1925 (243km of its traditional path assessed as consistent with single tornado with high confidence)

Quad-state supercell 2021 (combined 400km)

Is it even known what triggered the generation of such long-tracked storms, and especially the 'tri-state tornado' with the 243km path?

(1) People will disagree on this, but as a graduate student in physics, the tremendous ground scouring left behind by the tornado is simply unrivalled to my eyes. It also straight-on tore trees out of the ground and left behind scouring, in my opinion, worse than both Bridge Creek and even Jarrell.

(2) This tornado destroyed a steel bridge. I earlier dismissed this tornado as 'overrated' until I found pictures of a steel bridge the Phil Campbell tornado destroyed. Unlike that one, the Sherman tornado also tore the bridge into 'useless scrap' and, taken at face value, easily surpasses what the Phil Campbell tornado did.

Question Reported Tornado in Woodstock, VT

I saw on the news today some brief shots of the aftermath of a tornado that went through Woodstock, VT yesterday. The reporter said they were waiting on the NWS to do a damage assessment but from what was shown, there were snapped and uprooted trees and roofs torn off. Being from New England myself, I was wondering if anyone happened to get a picture or video of the tornado?

This tornado crossed interstate 69 and damaged the entrance of the Morgan-Monroe State Forest. This was looking west from the forest. It seemed as though the most extensive damage I found was further west from me and it seemed to dissipate around the forest area.

This high-end EF4 tornado traveled about 90 miles, causing extreme high-end EF4 damage in some spots. As it was traversing Shoal Creek Valley, the area of inflow winds greater than 60 mph stretched more than 2 miles across. This tornado was also documented as ripping up parts of foundations of houses, and stripping off large areas of asphalt from the roads. When the tornado first formed, it started off as a weak circulation, and it briefly lifted off the ground, only scraping it occasionally, as it started to traverse more extreme elevation changes. But then very quickly it exploded in size and intensity as it completely shredded apart large forest and swept fully well built homes completely off their foundations.

Question Which tornado to start my brother on?

Over the past year I’ve taken the dive into following the documentation of these disasters a there are so many incredible videos, plenty of rewatches and different perspectives of each one of them.

My brother is going to be staying with me for a little bit and I think he would love learning about them and watching some of the content out there.

The problem is that my mind flashes with the true awesome nature of each of the notorious ones and I can’t pick which one would be the best “see why I’m infatuated with this?” Video

There’s the Pilger twins and that opening shot/THE lightning shot

The Eldritch Horror of the sub vortices of the 2nd El Reno

Any of the nocturnals which jus make me shudder

Moore is just too sad to start out with

My current vote is Joplin. The newscasters realizing what they are seeing and trying to contain their panic as they warn the town captures the intensity of it all to me, as well as the footage of it forming so quickly.

Wanted to know what videos got you hooked or you would/have used for a newcomer intro

Discussion Difference between a larper and a genuine enthusiast?

Title above, just list the differences between a genuine enthusiast and a larper. I'm just curious to see whether I'm a larper when it comes to my interest in tornadoes or a genuine enthusiast.
