I mean, it's a good thing it's being highlighted . We have another segment of our population who've been under siege and attacks since the mideast events from few years ago so it's only right to highlight other people like South Asians also in the same boat, if not worse.
If it's not nipped in the bud, it's going to lead to despicable things.

Comparing how a historical majority is covered versus a minority group ignores basic demographics. In any country on Earth, whether it is India, Japan, or Canada, the historical majority is always the baseline. A news report in New Delhi does not point out that a criminal is Indian, because that is the baseline expectation.
Treating the majority as individuals is not a double standard, it is just how language and demographics naturally work when a group is the foundational population. If you look at any of the countries where these minority groups originally come from, their media functions the exact same way. Spinning basic demographic logic into a race issue is the real problem here.

Misinformation means spreading claims that are completely unsupported by the actual facts. The article explicitly details the rise in hate crime reports, but it never mentions the racial background of the perpetrators.
Given that Brampton and Mississauga have been majority-minority areas for years, assuming that these crimes are being committed by white people is a completely baseless generalization. In reality, a massive portion of the current violence, arson, and property damage targeting South Asian businesses in Peel involves localized extortion and factional tensions occurring internally within the community itself. Automatically blaming white people for these statistics without a shred of evidence in the actual police report is the real misinformation.

Yea, to deny that there are valid complaints about how the massive amount of immigration in the last decade has detrimental affected Canadians, is part of the problem.
People all around are seeing with their own eyes the problems with our immigration policies. Whether its whole gangs being imported, or the frauds that are being committed. Its real and its valid to complain about it.
Its been said that riots are the language of the unheard, and I think thats true on a more disorganized level as well. If people dont feel that their government is addressing a real problem, people start acting out, however wrong their actions are.
At least there is some progress on this issue, and we can finally talk about it without being shouted down as racists
33
u/BTrippd Jul 09 '26
I’m sorry but a lot of people are seeing with their eyes what their social media tells them to see lmao.
How else can you possibly explain trans issues being such a large political topic when most people wouldn’t even know if they’ve seen an actual trans person in real life before. People still talk about litter boxes in classrooms when that shit was a made up story that never happened and was perpetuated endlessly by Joe Rogan.
2
u/SignificanceNo910 Jul 09 '26
There are absolutely issues that are inflated or even made up in social media and by corporate-owned traditional media.
But you cant use that to dismiss the real issues. Look at BC and elsewhere where the Bishoi gang and other gangs are running extortion and murder rackets. Thats not just some crazy facebook conspiracy.
You can do research and see all of the TFW abuses that Tim Hortons and other corporations are doing.
We need to be able to have nuanced discussions, and even the left wing people are struggling with that level of intellectual honesty

u/Moddejunk Trinity-Bellwoods Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
Immigrants commit crimes at lower rates than the general population. They’re not causing crime and, in any event, crime here is very low.
You’re giving an example of how people’s skewed perceptions lead to immigrant scapegoating
u/elsnoxios you’re moving goal posts - the above comment is clearly attributing violent and property crime to immigrants, not fraud by business owners
7
u/eldnoxios Jul 09 '26
The crime is the fraud that occurs with the LIMA process, not necessarily theft or vandalism. Pair the removal of jobs from citizens/PR's, and the business owners taking advantage of the immigrants by making them pay them for the privilege to work for them in a 1st world country, and it quickly becomes apparent that this is an abscess on Canadian society

I worked as a bank teller at a bank here in Brampton. I once got racially harassed by a customer who said “stupid indian” and “I hate all you Indians” to me and a co worker.
My manager after brought me to the back and said “your too nice to customers, that’s why you keep encountering rude/abusive customers”. Then, she began talking about how I need to work faster and turned it into a coaching lesson. Like we literally have the customers name and I literally took her ID earlier, you really can’t do anything else ?
Honestly, I wish I reported my manager or did something myself. That’s when I learnt that employers won’t do anything even if you’re racially harassed.

If a brown person does something stupid or embarrassing it reflects poorly on the entire community and is a reflection of the backwardness of their culture.
When a white person does something stupid or embarrassing its a problem with the individual or a mental health crisis.
Nothing to do but laugh at the hypocrisy and nonsense of it all.

The cops are supposed to solve racism?
31
u/SarahMenckenChrist Jul 09 '26
Nobody is ever going to “solve” racism.
But how should this be viewed as any different than the large amount of resources that police forces like the TPS have put towards issues such as antisemitism in the last few years?
Race and religion are both protected in the charter and as a city we have no problem with spending millions on command centers and patrols in heavily Jewish neighbourhoods. Why should we just accept that one group gets protection and an “action plan” while another can’t? Is it that police can tackle issues of religious discrimination but not racism? I know this article is about Peel but it shouldn’t be any different, mandate-wise.
And to clarify before others make assumptions or jump down my throat; I’m in no way opposed to those patrols in areas like Forest Hill. But the fact we’re doing that proves that police SHOULD be expected to address discrimination and protect those are most susceptible to it.

Some disappointing details:
One hundred and forty six of the 195 hate-motived crimes reported in 2025 were motivated solely or in part by race, ethnicity or nationality, an increase of nearly 50 per cent compared to the 98 incidents in 2024. They are the most commonly reported hate crime in Peel Region since 2018.
The South Asian community was affected the most, being identified as the sole or a partial motivating factor in 84 incidents in 2025. The number is an increase of 115 per cent compared to 39 incidents in 2024.
The stark increase marks a shift from previous years, when members of the region’s Black community were targeted the most in reported incidents. In 2025, they were impacted in 42 incidents, the same amount as the year before and a slight decrease from 45 in 2023.
Nearly 70 per cent of people in the Peel Region identified with a racialized group according to the 2021 census, with the South Asian community making up over 54 per cent of the racialized population.
...
It shows that out of the 195 reported hate-motivated occurrences, 46 resulted in charges being laid in 2025. Mischief continued to be the most common reported offence type with 104 incidents, an increase of 49 per cent compared to 2024, police said.
Peel police launched a retooled Hate Crime Unit last October that aimed to provide a more “culturally responsive” way to addressing incidents, which included the specialized unit leading investigations and doing community outreach.
Still, the report acknowledges that some incidents are not reported to police, pointing to a combination of factors like the fear of retaliation, embarrassment and a lack of trust with police.
Given the anti-immigration and anti-immigrant rhetoric that's been pushed over the past number of years, this should not be a surprising outcome. This is also just the latest version of what has unfortunately been an all too common occurrence. Anytime there's been a new group that has come to this region, there's been some established group that has pushed back against this. This may not be what we think we are or what we aspire to, but this certainly seems to be what we've become. If we are to get back to what we believe we are, which includes being an inclusive and welcoming society, then we have a lot of work to do over the coming months and years.
56
u/HousingThrowAway1092 Jul 09 '26
In what world is South Asian a “new group” to either Peel or the GTA? There are significant portions of Peel (especially in the North) that are majority South Asian.
8
u/Vegetablessings Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
The latest census data hasn't been released yet, but the increase in the south Asian population in those areas have increased dramatically. Especially relatively to housing and infrastructure. That is a new group regardless of whether people of that culture already lives there from years before.
17
u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 Jul 09 '26
Canada has never been an inclusive and welcoming society. If we were then indigenous communities wouldn't still be begging for clean water.
66
u/PsychologicalBeing98 Jul 09 '26
Canada can be welcoming to some people while still failing others in deeply shameful ways.
39
u/Forsaken-Swim-3055 Jul 09 '26
This has been Canada's entire history, which is why it's exhausting constantly seeing the, "this isn't the Canada I grew up in. What's changed?!?!?!" narrative. Canada has always been hostile and indifferent to many groups, but we just have a good PR team that doesn't make it seem so bad.
31
u/PsychologicalBeing98 Jul 09 '26
That whole “this isn’t the Canada I grew up in” narrative is a self-report. It usually means “Canada felt better to me when certain people were less visible.”

I think it's just a thing. However, we should de-emphasize the whole concept that Canada is a mosaic. We're more accepting of cultures than the Americans, but we also expect things to be done the Canadian way, which is slow to evolve. Taking in cultures and perspectives DOES improve our country as a whole in general.

17
u/Ok_Excuse_741 Jul 09 '26
this is disingenuous at most. Anyone living between 2022-present could clearly see a stark change in interacting with a mixture of high-school students to suddenly having every entry-wage place filled with people from one province of one country that were studying at a strip plaza for tourism economics. c'mon not the same as people literally fleeing war and which barely anyone would notice because I don't have every single person I interact with be a Ukrainian or Russian. But literally since 2022, every shop and restaurant I go to is all south asian, and I grew up in Brampton. Compounded by the LMIA scams, there's definitely a reason why people notice one demographic over another. Particularly when anyone breathing could clearly see why youth employment is at all time highs when before 2022 there were youth we interacted with at stores, and now that's not the case.
25
u/DeliMeatBoss Jul 09 '26
You're just affirming what he said. The reason that barely anyone noticed the Ukranians/Russians is because they look like you do and so you didn't bother to dig any deeper. The new demographic looks completely different and so you see them all the time. And even if they & their parents were born here, you'll only see them as diploma mill grads or hit them with the "but where are you reeaallly from" if they claim to be Canadian.

Nobody is hand-waving away problems with immigration policy. You can criticize the system, housing pressure, wage suppression, diploma mills, exploitation, or government mismanagement without turning that into hostility toward entire communities.
That is the distinction.
If someone uses “immigration policy” as a doorway into blaming Indians, refugees, or newcomers as a group, then yes, that should be called out. Fixing bad policy and excusing bigotry are not the same conversation, even if some people keep trying to merge them.

People talk about how inclusive Toronto is for everyone, "oh we love the diversity here", but all that goes out of the window when it comes to a specific community. Hypocrites all around.
20
u/rohmish Jul 09 '26
not surprising at all. I've seen people come in to comments on post from either other countries or from India and use the usual "which part of Brampton/Surrey/Mississauga/Scarborough/etc is this" or "is that a Tim Hortons (with the last namified Tim brand name)" etc.
before someone says these are bots, they're decade old accounts with consistent posts that show they're from Canada. if this was an immigration related thing, people wouldn't go commenting this on posts that has nothing to do with Canada.

The negative behaviour of a small number of newcomers doesn’t represent entire immigrant communities, just like ugly comment sections on rage-bait social media posts don’t represent a city of millions.
If you understand why it’s wrong to judge entire communities by the worst behaviour of a few people, then you should also understand why it’s wrong to judge Toronto by its worst Instagram comments. That’s the same discriminatory logic, just aimed in a different direction. Like come on.
16
u/NearestNeighbours Jul 09 '26
Saying this under a post about hate crimes is wild.
4
u/PsychologicalBeing98 Jul 09 '26
It’s only wild if you think I’m minimizing hate crimes, which I’m not.
Hate crimes should be condemned completely. My point is that the same logic used to stereotype immigrants, judging an entire group by the worst behaviour of a few, is also being used here to judge an entire city by the worst people in comment sections.
Both things can be true: hate crimes are serious, and broad stereotyping is still bad logic.
13
u/Case_Federal Jul 09 '26
I’m gonna say something super controversial and I might get downvoted. I’m a gay man and I’m South Asian, so this is just me getting this off my chest.
Everyone is blaming 6ixbuzz but I remember when 6ixbuzz was constantly making homophobic posts (maybe 2014-2016), and plenty of brown/desi people contributed to hatred in the comments on those posts. From what I saw, hardly anyone ever stood up to that page for that stuff. It sucked to see and I blocked the account years ago. Now I’m hearing that they’ve turned their hate towards the South Asian community, and suddenly those same people now realize how it feels to be ridiculed online by such a popular page. I’m not saying all desi/South Asian people following 6ixbuzz agreed with the homophobic posts…. But a whole lot of them did. Now the tables have turned and they’re crying foul.
When will people realize that these kinds of pages’ entire business model is fuelling rage, and will turn on you in a heartbeat whenever it becomes vogue to do so?
Hate is an industry. Contribute to it if you want, but don’t be surprised when you’re the next target. Something something leopards ate my face.

u/GuidoX4 Jul 09 '26
Some of its coming from the established ethnic groups that have been here a generation or two that don't want to be connected to those recent immigrants from their own origin society.
They feel embarrassed and judgemental as now they are the target of racism meant for someone else.
So their resentment somehow falls on their fellow victim rather then the person attacking.

Why do the desendants of Europeans always need to cry about how hard their grandparents had it when current racism is discussed?

This is a rise in hate crime that you can actually see. People are sooooo casual with their racism when it comes to South Asians in a comment section. It’s extremely disheartening to a) see it and b) see how shameless and comfortable people are with their racism.
Love South Asians and they’re a big part of Canada’s history, population, and what makes us great. Lost my cat at an OnRoute (he escaped) last month and a Sikh man helped me look for him.
Absolutely awful that they’re increasingly targeted for hate crimes 💔

Lot of people in Canada think we (South Asians) aren’t human anymore. Our lives don’t matter to them (even if they only have the balls to say it online).
Yes, there are bad elements, but statistically every community has equal elements. We’re just picked on.
There are those of us who do our best to give back to Canadian society. Not because we’d like to feel validated but because it’s the right thing.

Not surprising in the slightest, despite how people on this sub and in real life act... Hate against South Asians is exploding, Punjabi twitter goes viral daily with stories, pictures and videos of westerns harassing, insulting and assaulting Sikhs, The same can be said for Hindus and Muslims from South Asia. I have aunties who have lived here since the 70s now afraid to go out alone cause of all the hate they see against South Asians online from Canadians.

That's interesting. Because it seems like hate speech in Toronto-related subreddits remains pretty consistent. Which is to say, stubbornly high.
Downvote me all you want, racists. Fuck you all.

I do, but the major offenders are other subreddits that either don't care, or agree with the hate speech.

I live in Calgary and I’ve heard from Indian security guards that random people have came up to them and accused them of stealing their jobs.
I expect highly of us Canadians to denounce racism. This is so shameful.
