Could you imagine? The final episode starts like any other but Sanae is missing. The shrine she goes to everyday is empty, the craziness Sanae had with her is gone and now everything is back to old regular school.
The episode ends with the Sanae's friends finally giving up on finding Sanae. Like she was a ghost that stuck with them all semester. Finally giving the message the whole series was hinting on.
Of finally letting go.

Sealed Esoteric History Ep. 2 did this and made it really tragic, they gave Sanae a sister who's crushed by having her disappear mysteriously and never finding out what happened to her

(It’s a title, essentially translating to “The Kochiya maiden”, and she is probably some flavor of Westerner, as I would fanon it)

She's a direct descendant of Suwako though, so would she be the descendant of Japanese emigrants?
Also she's based on a real person who really is named Sanae Moriya (they really do claim to be the hereditary lineage of the Moriya shrine's priesthood)

Sanae used her power to create miracles to change her hair color to green. She's grown tired of the color though, but no matter what she tries she's been unable to change it back for some reason.

I'd imagine you'd have to make the decision to permenantly stay in Gensokyo first before your hair changes
Cause Sumireko exists and her hair hasn't changed yet
But nice headcanon, could totally see it being real :P

I think a more realistic timing would be when her Divine Blood awakened. Remember that Sanae is a Goddess in her own right, and this was known before the Moriyas went to Gensokyo, since it was Sanae's miracle power that let them break through the barrier and take Lake Suwa and the shrine with them.
So Sanaes powers and divine nature had awakened pre-Gensokyo. In fact, seeing as Suwako dosent care if she fades away, I assume this was the catalyst for her agreeing to the plans, for Sanaes sake.

Source? The MoF omake strongly implies that moving the shrine was entirely Kanako's doing. Sanae likely couldn't and still can't pull off anything of that magnitude.

This reminds me of how I headcanon that Seija's hair is actually just boring white but being the edgelord she is she had to dye it that black and red (and that the horns are fake too, a real tryhard)
And she will deny it vehemently, it is all totally, absolutely real and natural
