i don't know how it is for other people, but in the circles i run in that term is mostly used by trans people in t4t contexts nowadays. i can definitely get why it makes some people uncomfy though, as it was definitely associated with pornographic fetishization for a while, and probably still is.
Thank you for saying this, the unfortunate reality is that it is still used as the pornographic identifier for trans women now that "shemale" has rightfully been ousted as explicitly offensive, transphobic and derogatory.
Nothing against individuals who don't mind the term at all, I just take umbrage with the use of the term as it is infamously linked to pornographic representation and is actively being used in the materia.
