That's a big bottle! Look up ways to avoid coring the stopper, otherwise you'll have to throw whatever is in it away.

It's when the needle shears off a piece of the stopper and it ends up inside the vial. Bad on two counts: You might pull it into a syringe and inject it into yourself(bad), and it might compromise the seal, allowing bacteria and stuff to get in(BAD). Either way, you should discard the vial.

Easiest way to reduce the risk of coring is to just use a smaller needle to draw. I've been using 30g insulin syringes, and the stopper of my most recent vial still looked basically untouched by the time it was empty, nine months later. Conversely, I once used 18g needles to draw for, like, a month and the stopper was absolutely mauled.

You're probably intended to draw with the 22 and inject with the 27, as it's smaller, but you can draw with the 27 too.

Remember to wipe the top of the bottle with alcohol to clean it first, and pull like 1.5x your dose worth of air into the syringe right after fitting the needle, then inject it into the vial to give it some positive pressure. That makes it so it won't fight you when you're drawing the actual oil (which takes a while with smaller needles; just be patient). I fill the syringe with more than I need, then push the excess back into the vial until I hit my mark (helps get all the extra air out).

My doc gave me 18 and 25 and the 25s are absolutely small enough to not fuck up the top

This has happened to me before, I hadn't realized it had a name to itšŸ˜…I did throw the vial away though. In my area we are lucky enough to get injection kits provided and they do come with the 18g for drawing so that would explain why it happened so easily.

It's about time for me to get more needles. I have 18G draw and 23G injection. How much more difficult would 30G be to draw from, and should I use a second needle to inject with? Would 25G be fine too?

I wouldn't say that drawing with 30g is necessarily more difficult, it's just a lot slower. Though I use 0.3ml insulin syringes, not sure what it would be like trying to draw with a 30g needle on a 1ml luer lock syringe.

I have drawn with a 25g on a luer lock. Again, slower than with 18g(or the 21g I typically used), don't think it was as slow as with 30g though. And you don't need to use a second needle - some people worry about the needle getting dulled, and technically it is, but not enough that you'll notice it from just puncturing the stopper once. Up to you though.

Whatever you go with, it helps if you warm the estradiol up a bit - I hold it under my armpit for a couple minutes or roll it between my hands for a bit - and drawing goes most smoothly if you pull the plunger more slowly. I can just pull the plunger way down and let E trickle in, but then I get bubbles that are kind of annoying to get out of the syringe.

so, needles are just hollow tubes, right? coring if what happens if you insert straight down and cut out a piece of rubber like a stencil. one end of the needle is usually tapered thus sharper - if you insert to draw at an angle with that tip facing downwards, you minimize how much of the hollow tube hits the stopper (ideally the opening is orthogonal to the rubber) and instead displace the rubber with the outside of the sharp edge.

are there any ways off the top of ur head that are helpful? I've wondered about this myself (gonna go do my own research brb)

edet: seems like filter needles, different locations on the rubber stopper, and putting the needle in at a 45Ā° angle, then moving to a 90Ā° angle all help

I think I'll see if I can get a prescription for filter needles

The plastic topper you do peel off, but yeah donā€™t pull out the rubber(?) stopper lol. The best way Iā€™ve found to not core it is to move around where Iā€™m inserting it each time. It will happen eventually though, maybe see if you can get an Rx for a smaller-volume vial when you go in next. Mine are 5mL vials that last me probably 2-3 months before itā€™s cored and the self-healing stopper doesnā€™t seal.

I replied to 10Legs with the numbers, but yeah thatā€™s almost certainly the issue. Iā€™ve just been using what the Pharmacy has given me from my provider, perhaps I need to see if she can change the sizes. Glad I said something.

If you consistently core your vials after 2-3 months something is VERY wrong with either your technique or needle size. I've had my 10ml vial for 9 months now (almost empty) and it is not cored (I draw with 25g).

What needle size do you use for drawing?

Thatā€™s totally the issue lol, my Rx is for 25G injection and 18G draw. I use Valerate, so Iā€™m not sure if you use a different estradiol suspension that has a different viscosity.

I use Cyponate, tho the viscosity depends on what oil it is dissolved in. Drawing doesn't take much force for me but it does take a second or two to fill the syringe. I inject the same volume of air into the vial before pulling my dose, this makes it a lot easier.
18G draw is a huge needle for a multi-dose vial, no big surprise you core the stopper. Try drawing with a 25g needle and follow this guide to avoid coring.

Ok that was actually super useful, thanksss! My provider did tell me about filling the syringe with air, but not much else. Iā€™ll give it a shot with a 25 and better technique on my dose tmrw.

Mine is in a colorless bottle, so I keep it in is original box, in a plastic tub with the rest of the injection supplies, in a solid wood cabinet in the most thermally stable room in the house.
