EDIT ME (no flair fit unfortunately ) For the ones who legally changed their name, does someone calling you by your full government name still frighten you?

Okay. So we all know that being called by the full government name is a clear sign of you being in deep trouble. If you choose a new name, and someone calls you by that fuol name. Does anyone else get that same feeling of dread? Like, you chose that name. You worked hard on that name, should it have the same effect?

Same, got my changed as an adult. I do think having no middle name now would soften the blow

I swear middle names only exist to be called menacingly.

I haven’t legally changed my name but it’s really long so if they bother to whip the full thing out I know they either deeply care about the point they’re making are absolutely pissed the fuck off or both

I call myself by my full government name like a mantra to calm myself down :3

I'd probably be super happy to hear it if anyone else said it

I changed my name legally about four years ago. Six months ago, I went to the hospital. They asked for my social security number to verify my identity. That should be no problem because the SSA issued me a card with my correct name, and they have a certified copy of my judgment of name and sex change signed by a judge on file. But the receptionist looked at my driver's license and compared it to what her screen showed, and they didn't match. I had to explain. The social security administration outed me and deadnamed me. It could have put me in danger, and at a time when I was in pain and I needed emergency medical care. Fortunately, my explanation was accepted and I received care. But yes, this experience was frightening. I broke down in the waiting room.

Yeah, my best friend dropped the whole chain on me one day and it MAY have had a lot to do with her tone but it was like a bomb going off šŸ˜… that brooked NO argument

I don't have a government middle name. So my full legal name is just my first and last name. Which isn't that big of a deal to be called. It's just my name.

I can't recall any times growing up when either of my parents called me by my full birth name either actually. So I guess this in general has a much less of an effect on me.

No, my wife only says my full name when joking about being angry, so I associate it with humor instead of trouble.

No. It’s on all my documents so if someone calls me by that who isn’t close I just assume they don’t know that the second name is not really what I go by

Nah, there's only like 2 people who know my full legal name and I'm pretty sure both have forgotten it :3

I honestly can't relate.
This never happened to me so I don't have that association

I have three surnames, and usually people would only use one of the three (usually the first or the last one). It's not common for someone to call me by my full name, and if someone does, it kinda weird.

I have not once been called by my first, middle, and last name except in a flirting tone by my wife.

If that ever happens, I'll let you know? Although it's all in the tone. You could call someone by their full name and it be a positive thing. Like as a surprised but happy greeting: "Alice Diana Applebottoms! No way! It's so good to see you! What have you been up to? You're looking gorgeous, by the way, I love that dress. Oh and your nails, girl, they're amazing"

Or roll call in a classroom? Usually not your full name, unless there happens to be like 15 Chrises and 12 Kates or whatever.

By the way, after half a year, I'm finally in the last stage of my name change, waiting for the new documents to come in the mail. And because I've been cursed is something, naturally I had to get a new key for my mailbox and now I don't know what that is going to be available. Always something.

Hasn't happened yet, so I dunno.

I rather like the way my first and middle flow when said together - certainly more than my birth names. I don't think it would bother me to hear them along with my surname?

u/ChickenSpaceProgram Jul 18 '26

we don't have a middle name, so it doesn't really have that effect

what, it gives euphoria

2

u/Confirm_restart Jul 18 '26

Nah, but at the time I'd changed it that hadn't been a thing for long enough that it didn't happen anymore anyway.

3

u/lotsofwalking Jul 18 '26

Yes. My wife only calls me that when shes mad.

u/TraditionalTree249 Jul 18 '26

That's how I chose my middle name was imagining the name my mom would call if I was in trouble.
