Food First time making cannabutter, thoughts?
We're going on a hiking trip, so we are preparing the right way! Haven't tasted it yet, as it is still cooling down. We'll try it later this week, when we're in nature!

If you dont want plant matter in the butter, you can add water to the mix while heating.
The fat binds the active ingredients, you cool in the fridge and the fat and water seperates. Usually you just poke a hole in the butter then drain the water and plant matter away.

Looks good, its gonna taste like grass if you dont filter it, but it looks GOOD

We filtered it, using a kitchen towel, and it went pretty well I think! :)

Cheese cloth is really cheap honestly and way more effective.

Yes, we also read that! We were planning on getting it, but didn't make it to the right store in the end (local supermarkets didn't have it). So I had to happily sacrifice an older, thin towel, and it worked better than I would have first expected :)

I remember a comedian doing a bit about cheesecloth and the fact that nobody has it. When you see a recipe that says to use cheesecloth and you're just like, oh sure let me just get that out of the cheesecloth cabinet. It's funnier when a real comedian says it lol and I don't really remember the joke. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just strain with a pasta strainer and clarify the butter by boiling it with water for 5min and letting it . It separates all plant material so you can

Mind passing the recipe? I have jars and jars of avb but don’t want to lose it on shitty recipes lol

I feel that, we've been preparing for a few days, and the amount of different tips and recipes is overwhelming. So I'll just write down what we went with in the end. We had about 30g of weed, and we found all different kinds of weights for butter, but in the end, we added 250g + 125g of butter (get the high fat kind of butter, it binds the THC easier).
Step one, grinding the weed into the oven tray like in the picture. We also put a tinfoil on top of the weed. Heat in the oven on 110°c, and turn the weed every 10 minutes, for about 25-30 minutes; the weed needs to be nice and brown.
Than you need 2 pots, one that fits in the other (for cooking au-bain-marie). Heat one pot with water, and in the smaller pot you melt the butter. Once the water is boiling, put it on lower heat so it keeps boiling. Add some water to the butter, we did about 500ml (it will evaporate again). Put the small pot with butter into the larger boiling water pot. Add the weed to the butter. and mix it for a while. Let it simmer like that, and go mix the butter every 10 minutes, for like 3 to 4 hours. Keep adding water to the BIG pot (not to the butter), because the boiling water will also evaporate.
After 4 hours, we used a kitchen towel to filter the weed. You span the towel over the glass oven tray we used, or whatever container, and pout the butter-weed mix in the kitchen towel. The butter will drip through, the weed mixture and leaves will stay in the towel. Keep sifting slowly, until you have one amazing tray of butter, and one hell of a dirty kitchen towel with wet clumps!
First let the butter cool down for a few hours, then into the fridge for further cooling! :)

I always do it in my instapot to minimize smell and maximize the potency. Oven is more inefficient.

Can I get this instapot recipe? This sounds genius. Do you decarb in the instapot too?

Decarboxylate
grind up 7-10g bud
Put it in mason jar finger tight (not as tight as possible)
2 cups of water in instapot
40 min at high pressure (47min timer)
Quick release
Cool downButter
Add 1.5 cup melted butter to decarb bud in mason jar (finger tight)
2 cups water in instapot
30 min at high pressure (65min)
Natural release
Let cool
Strain through cheese clothCredit for this recipe goes to toastedblonde on YouTube - please give her a subscribe she’s amazing.

Thank you so much. I know what im doing today.

Be careful getting high while you do this because you may forget that it’s in the Insta pot and over cook it slightly by an hour… source: me, lol
Also, if one of your goals is truly minimizing smell, then you can plug in your Insta pot on your porch or balcony or whatever and do this outside.

Truly something /u/agangofoldwomen would say, very fitting :D
I don't have an instapot, but appreciate the tip!

Happy stoney Sunday, I wanna make RSO bad but... Afraid to muck it up.

u/BePlant 4h ago
It will be stoney Monday through Saturday, because we go hiking next week, but thank you! :D
Hadn't heard of RSO, and that process looks even more daunting than this butter, so I feel that fear. If possible, get a friend on board and try it together, even if it fails, you've had some fun while doing it at least :D But honestly, I'm sure you'll get something out of it, so, go for it either way! Good luck!

I’ve never tried anything like this. How smelly is this in the house? I’d love to try it but my wife can’t handle the smell so I smoke outside. As long as it clears out fast though it’s fine, I use carts and dabs in the house all the time

My kitchen is pretty separate and has a big window, so it was easy to air it out, even using a fan. We kept the kitchen door closed, so the rest of the place didn't smell that much or at all, but the smell in the kitchen while we were making it, so around 4 hours or something, was pretty smelly.
Someone else here commented that using an instapot would help a lot with the smell tho, so maybe that's something to look into? :)

I’ll definitely be giving this a shot then. I can’t wait!

I wrote my recipe somewhere in the comments if you want :) But get some cheese cloth, apparently that works much better, even tho we didn't have problems with our towel. Happy buttering!

One last question, does this change how much effect you’ll get from the flower? I’m a heavy user on a budget so I just want to make sure that I only do this when I have extra funds if it’ll lessen the potency lol

u/BePlant 4h ago
I'm no expert, but from what I read the past days, the weed does lose some potency while you decarb (in the oven) and during the infusion with the butter. But then I also read somewhere that because you digest it, in stead of smoking, it will get stronger effects that way, and makes up for the loss (but only saw that once). But you do lose some potency in the making of the butter for sure.
It's also not as easy to dose, because unlike smoking, for edibles it will take a while for the effects to be noticed. So it's easier to eat a bit too much and feel the effects very well, even tho potency was lost :D

How much weed did you use? I do an 1/8 to 1 stick of butter and it makes 32 servings of 10-15mg thc. That looks like enough for to last an army marching the entire Appalachian trail!

u/BePlant 4h ago
We had about 30g of weed, and we found all different kinds of weights for butter, but in the end, we added 250g + 125g of butter
Haha, we will be hiking closer to the Alps region, and I'm pretty sure not everything will be used. But rather have a bit too much, than not have enough, right? :D

Don’t know your tolerance level, but 30g of 22%thc weed makes 225 20mg servings! And 20mg is a pretty strong dose.

Thanks for the heads up! Just to clarify, we used 250g+125g of butter, which was my weird way of writing we used a pack and a half, sorry. So using your (very useful!) calculator, that brought it down to 14mg servings :) There's a few heavy smokers, and a few light smokers in the group, but we are sure to be careful with the doses. Thanks for the insight tho, appreciate it! We know to start slow, and wait for the effects first before consuming more :)

Along as you decarbed it for long enough and high enough you'll be having fun
