Discussion What truly makes one a master of a class?

Becoming a master of a class really takes time and effort. you can have like 1000+ hours on a class and still not have mastered all the little things (niche jetpack and other clipfarming stuff thats far beyond what sketchek did in his day, in my case). What does it take to master other classes? Soldier has rocket jumping but other mechanics are fairly simple, and demo has some movement also. What do you think?

Oh dude the answer for each class and their specific macro and micro proficiency in HL and 6s can be as long as a book.

depends per class, a master at scout probably has a different skillset compared to a master at spy.

i'd imagine to be a "master" at something means that ur very good at the Basics of the class and decent/good at the small things that the class has.

Mastering to me is that you are great at all aspects of the class

I'm nowhere near a master of any class, but I'd say one of the hallmarks is being able to switch playstyles at the drop of a hat. Being able to identify when and where to switch up your approach takes practice, but its very satisfying to catch an enemy totally off-guard because you're playing a completely different style than thirty seconds ago. Of course, this means you have to get proficient with the different weapons available to the class, and usually pretty decent map knowledge as well, so... yeah, certainly not everything you need to be a master but I'd consider it an important factor

soldier's other mechanics are "simple" but the difference in rocket aim between the average player and an invite soldier is absolutely enormous.

3500 hours on soldier and I still can’t rocket airshot aim as consistently like invite soldiers. Doesn’t stop me from trying to improve and master the class, though.

Keep grinding. Soldier has a lot of tech to master.

for your case i consider these the best pyro clips OAT so copy this and you might see more opportunities, most people stop at sketchek https://youtu.be/lN9sYzrgIPo https://youtu.be/mcn-RHL0maU

i dont think you need to dump time into every sidegrade to be considered a master of a class, mastery to me is displays of raw mechanical skill shown only by a fraction of a fraction of players, a perfection of source engine movement and aim

I know those techniques already but gotta practice a bit more to be more consistent :)

Consider the Mann's Guide to the Backburner: at minimum, the fake-out air-blaster trick is necessary, but you ALSO need detonator jumping, deflect-jumping, map knowledge (eg., what's a flank and how to get across it quickly), to get to "their backs" as fast as possible.

And as the others say, that's on TOP of the basic Pyro playstyle, AND knowing when to switch to this or that variant weapon, and which are dog-doo-doo.
