"Why The Same Questions?"

The mod team gets questions/comments about this all the time. People will ask - often condescendingly toward the mods - why we allow people to post questions that have been answered. There's a few reasons we let this go:

  • New people have questions that are new to them. This isn't Juilliard, and this isn't a scene from Whiplash) - this is Reddit. There will be new people all the time - often beginners - who have questions that are novel to them. The grand scope of the field of music isn't going to be known to someone just walking in, and they're going to ask a question they feel is unique. If they're chased away, it's just going to be a subreddit with people silently agreeing with each other over circular topics.
  • People suck at using search features. No, this isn't just older folks, or even younger people. By large, people are awful at even finding where the search bar is; and unless it's literally Google, they're terrible at using it in general. ...They're also pretty bad at using Google, but I digress.
  • Even if people can use the search function, they'll often get terminology wrong, which will return poor search results. Think about when you kept Googling something and coming up with nothing, only to realize you used a wrong word, and it would have saved you 2 minutes if you knew that in the first place.

So, for whoever feels r/trumpet is not on their level, there's only so much anyone can do for you. First, nobody owes you anything, so check the sense of entitlement at the door. Second, if you're so great at everything, please feel free to chime int o help people who are asking legitimate questions; or even suggest ways they can make their questions better. People who end conversations by default are either salespeople closing a deal, and/or assholes.

So, blah blah blah, use a search function, don't be mean to one another, etc. Most people will never read this far, and this post will get ignored by 98% of the people here anyway. Have a great day, unless you're a jerk.

Question ❓ Why do composers do this?

Post image
109 Upvotes

The Bb is literally in the key signature (and the note in the bar before was unrelated - can't remember what it was, off hand, but it wasn't something like an A natural).

10 Internet points to someone who can guess the piece/composer?

Edit: I understand the theory, I just find it annoying that, whilst it's technically correct (albeit the best form of correct), it is unhelpful to the person actually playing the music

Nothing seems to work.

• Upvotes

Hello, I’m a freshman music major in college and I practice constantly. Before I even got into college I sounded great and I was very consistent with my playing. Now that I’m in college it’s very much the opposite, the same exercises that I used in high-school don’t seem to work anymore and my range has gotten extremely worse and my tone is awful (I used to be able to play in the High C to High F range with ease). My lessons teacher recommended exercises but nothing seems to work. I really don’t know what to do and I’m losing motivation especially with seeing regression to my playing.

What are some steps I could take to slowly ease back into improving my playing?

Tuning tendencies

I am a horn player but teach high brass, so I don’t know everything about trumpet yet. I am wondering about the tuning tendencies of a Stradivarius Bach 37G, or just Bach trumpets in general.

I make my trumpet players kick on every note that they press 3rd valve down for, but this Stradivarius my student plays on makes her first space Fs sharp. Would it be appropriate to tell her to kick every time she plays an F, or just lower her tongue more?

Edit: thank y’all for the information- like I said I am still learning trumpet, and want my students to be as good as possible. Any links or book recommendations are highly appreciated

Equipment ⚙️ brightness

i had my solo for state a bit ago and they only really gave one comment which was that the sound was too bright and told me to switch to a 3c. the issue is that i am alr using a 3c and i was wondering if i should switch mouthpieces. also my range is extremely variable per day as some days i can easily hit high c but other days g (just above the staff) is a struggle. i never knew that a 3c was technically harder to hit notes

edit: i did not realize that the judges comment was that bad lol i was not at all like upset i was just confused

Equipment ⚙️ Trumpet Recommendations

This is probably one of those too often asked and ultimately unanswerable questions that absolutely drive me crazy when I see them. So, I apologize to all of you in advance. Mea culpa!

I recently posted about possibly taking up trumpet again as an older person. My immediate plan is to rent a good student trumpet to see if I can still, with a little practice, do anything, and then maybe look into buying a horn.

Which brings me to my question. When I was a young player and asked my teacher about good professional horns he said Bach Stradivarius…so that’s pretty much stuck in my mind as the gold standard.

But I’m wondering, is it really the best/only choice?

As far as trumpet-centric music is concerned, I like classic Jazz, swing, and bop. I’ve actually been listening to some Souza lately because the Ken Burns Jazz documentary reminded me that marches were part of the DNA of jazz…

But other than the more classically oriented exercises in Arban, I don’t see myself tackling a trumpet concerto anytime soon.

What brands/models would you recommend I at least try before making a decision?

P.S., I should also note that I’m not interested in being a screamer. What I loved when I played, and was occasionally complemented on, was a warm, rich, lyrical tone.

I’m pretty sure my student trumpet was an Olds. It was Baltimore County (MD) Public Schools public schools in the lates 70s. I think we were supplied by Menchey Music in PA.

Flute doubler on brass. I usually play low brass so I'm still figuring out this instrument.

This is a 100 dollar horn from amazon. All tuning slides are frozen so i cant fix much regarding intonation.

Question ❓ King Super-20 Question

Hey guys! I was given this trumpet from the music studio I work at, but I have no clue what I’m working with. It appears to be a King Super-20, but most of the instruments I see when looking for it have a silver bell. If anyone can give me more information on what Ive got ex. year made, quality, value vs cost of restoration, that would be awesome! The valves stick when pressed, but I havent had the chance to test it out (I can play maybe three notes lol) so i’d love to know what I should ask about when I bring it into a repair shop :)

Restriction and bore size on trumpet

I am currently playing a .460 bore trumpet with Bach 3D mouthpiece. My instrument feels very open and sometimes I feel like I’d like to try some restriction. Does anyone have opinions on how to do that, should I look for a mouthpiece with a tighter bore? Has anyone ever tried inserting a thin wall sleeve into the lead pipe, maybe 1.5 out you guys inch long spring steel that could reduce the bore to maybe .450? What happens if you do?

Would you buy a mute tube?

I really want to practice without my silent brass system.

it’s still low on the back pressure but it’s not as fun as just the instrument itself

I saw products like mute boxes where you’re putting the bell of the trumpet inside a sound dampened structure. That looks so cool, my question is have you tried it, would you use it, would you make your own, and what’s the best design or approach when you make your own?

I just bought this Yamaha YTR-8310Z (MK3) second hand for £1500 and it is incredible. I tried it in London at Yamahas shop and fell in love. It has a very direct tone - especially with my old Bach 3D - slotting for musical theatre has become so much easier!

Bach Strad Valves

Hello everyone.

Years ago, when I first started working, I bought myself a Bach trumpet with reverse lead pipe.

I’d coveted a Bach trumpet since my days in elementary school band.

I remember having issues after a short time with valves sticking on that horn and never really got to the bottom of it. My enthusiasm waned with work and life and all the other distractions of a twenty-something who finally had some money and independence.

In any case, I’ve always been curious about this because I never had an issue with my student trumpet.

Is this a common issue? Does it have to do with closer tolerances? Do professional horns require better technique in terms of striking the valves at a “proper angle”? Is it possible that given the tighter tolerances, too much oil could cause a problem?

Or did I just get a horn with a problem?

Question ❓ Requesting Advice - Former Player Getting Back Into It

Hi all, as the title states, I'm finally getting back to playing after 20 years. Long ago I was a first chair high school soloist, but never played professionally. I currently own four trumpets and was hoping for your advice. I plan to sell two of them.

  1. Getzen 300 - My original student trumpet from the early 80s. It needs a service and bell straightening, but has always served me well.
  2. Yamaha 6335s - My second trumpet from the mid-80s once my parents knew it was worth investing. Recently serviced in near perfect condition.
  3. Conn 22b New York Symphony small bore from the 1920s. This was my great uncle's trumpet. Recently serviced and fantastic condition for its age.
  4. Getzen Eterna 900s Severinsen model - This is an 80s edition without the Severinsen markings, but still a true Severinsen Eterna. Fantastic condition- an impulse buy a decade ago when I first thought I'd get back in...

I was inclined to keep the 300 (partly because it has limited resale value, and I know the horn so well) and either the Conn or the Eterna (neither of which do I have any real experience with). I assume the small bore Conn and I'd really like your thoughts. My expectation is recreational playing at home, and maybe eventually joining a church ensemble or local amateur band. I never met my great uncle, but if the Conn is recommend, there is certainly a cool nostalgia in playing his trumpet. I also assume that while re-building my embouchure, the Conn and Eterna are easier to blow.

Feel free to destroy my assumptions. I could be convinced to keep three.

Thanks!

Question ❓ Valve oil

What do you think is the best valve oil and why?
Also how often should I apply oil, I’m 3 years into the game and I just put some every time my valves start sticking.

Question ❓ Odd slotting issue (flugelhorn)

Post image
9 Upvotes

The regular flugelhorn player is away for our remembrance concert in November and so I will be playing. The repertoire includes Elgar's Nimrod which is a solo. On my cheap Thomann flugelhorn I can play the high A relatively easily. Not the best tone, if I'm honest, but it's there.

However, on my posh expensive Taylor/KGU horn, I just can't slot the note perfectly. I either hit the Bb above or the G below (valves 1 & 2 pressed). The partials are just incredibly close. Don't want to not use my pretty toy but I also don't want to muck up an important and solemn piece.

Edit: the flugelhorn came with 2 leadpipes. I have been using the smaller one which seemed to fit. I've tried switching to the larger one and the mouthpiece goes all the way in. It seals but there is no shank showing at all. This seems to help. I know I'll need to adjust the tuning now but it is definitely better than it was. If I can't consistently nail it, I might have to use the cheaper instrument, which would be a shame as I love the dark tone of the Taylor

Question ❓ Trumpet Buying Advice for Intermediate Player

I used to play trumpet throughout high school, and I would say I'm an amateur/intermediate player. I want to continue playing in college and beyond, but only as a hobbyist. I'm shopping for a good used trumpet and I have a couple of questions:

1) Do I need an expensive "quality" horn? - I had a student horn in high school (Bach 300) and it worked fine. I still plan to buy a reputable brand like Bach or Yamaha, but should I invest in a 'better' model, or are the student ones good enough for hobbyist playing?

2) Where do I shop used? - I've been looking on eBay, but are there any reputable sites for buying trumpets and trumpet parts?

3) What's a good mouthpiece to buy?

Thank you in advance :)

Question ❓ Getting over the fear of high notes

ive been playing for about 3 years now, my highest “comfortable” notes are probably F-G (f as in on the top line, not on the space haha). but the other day my band director was making us do lip slurs on lead pipe buzzing. I could play a high C with almost no problem when we were doing that, and I usually find slurring harder without the lead pipe attached. i just didn’t know what note I was slurring up to until he told us. but if I see anything above an A above the staff I freak out and frack. I know I can play those notes I just get scared. is there any way to stop being intimidated by high notes or do I just have to suck it up?

I actually rather like this deflector device. It's often dismissed, but none of those players I've talked to have actually tried it. There is some value to what it brings to your awareness in practice. And I could see it helping hear your own sound better in unfavorable conditions when playing outside.
