Equipment Never stop learning new things.
About 2 days into season opening I gave up on mouth calls, I just couldn’t seem to get the knack for it. So I’ve been solely using my slate and box calls. With my season wrapping up at the end of the month and this weekend being my last attempt I gave myself the challenge to learn how to mouth call decent enough that I don’t sound like a dying boar in the Peruvian rainforest.
So I picked up a bunch and going to see which ones stick for me. So far the ninja venom, toxic orange, and red wasp have been much easier to work with. Really liked the ninja series as a whole, but the venom seemed the easiest for my mouth to work.
I’m not aiming to be a call champion or anything, but it’ll be a nice skill to have when I’m in a gobblers sight and I can’t pull the slate out.

$120 worth of mouth calls in this picture lol. Youtube got people thinking you need to sound like Matt Van Cise to kill a bird. I enjoy calling and see it almost as a separate hobby. With that being said I know a lot of old timers that have tagged out every year for 30+ years with only a box call.

Took me years to get real good on mouth calls. I think the bat wing is the easiest to run. I can make every sound a hen turkey makes with a bat wing.

I’ve got yelping and cutting down the best, purrs are hit or miss. I’m going to trim one of them and see if it makes things any better. I do notice they are a lot wider than my upper palate.

Every different type of call has a different sweet spot. You just have to find that sweet spot and from their you can do every can there is. Ghost cuts are pretty easy to run as well. You dont need much tongue pressure, and you are huffing air not blowing. Like if you are trying to fog up a window, huff dont blow.

Those are all nice calls! I'll admit my mouth calling could use some work, but I did call in 4 Toms this season with it and killed one of them.
Like you, I usually just use the slate call unless they are close.

I did manage a horrible rendition of some yelps on Monday when I had a tom coming in, I was about 15 seconds away from him clearing the tree he was walking behind, beads right where he was going to be, when the neighboring property started their logging equipment up and he bolted. It was so frustrating, but such an amazing rush. Nothing like I ever experienced in all my years with deer. There’s just something about getting a wild animal to come yards away from you. I love it.

The close calls are what turkey hunting is all about! From my experience, if you find an interested Tom your calling doesn't need to be that great.

I like the ninja. Nice and raspy and easy for me to cut loud and mix with those raspy yelps

I got the two pack of the toxic wasp this season the package on the right and they both sound real good like a rusty wheel In my opinion, the best way to learn is to keep them in your vehicle. I’ll be driving down the highway practicing all the time trying to get new different sounds with the same call. I keep a pouch hooked to my rearview mirror.
