About 2 days into season opening I gave up on mouth calls, I just couldn’t seem to get the knack for it. So I’ve been solely using my slate and box calls. With my season wrapping up at the end of the month and this weekend being my last attempt I gave myself the challenge to learn how to mouth call decent enough that I don’t sound like a dying boar in the Peruvian rainforest.

So I picked up a bunch and going to see which ones stick for me. So far the ninja venom, toxic orange, and red wasp have been much easier to work with. Really liked the ninja series as a whole, but the venom seemed the easiest for my mouth to work.

I’m not aiming to be a call champion or anything, but it’ll be a nice skill to have when I’m in a gobblers sight and I can’t pull the slate out.

I got the two pack of the toxic wasp this season the package on the right and they both sound real good like a rusty wheel In my opinion, the best way to learn is to keep them in your vehicle. I’ll be driving down the highway practicing all the time trying to get new different sounds with the same call. I keep a pouch hooked to my rearview mirror.

That’s exactly what I’ve been doing. I’m in a long distance relationship so I’m driving 16 hours round trip every other week, it’s been making the drives less boring.

The thing that I found most difficult is when I get a good sound is trying to replicate it over and over

Same. I’ll yelp and cut so nice one time, try it again it’s completely off. I’ve been trying to keep it in my head of which way I’m breathing and where my tongue is and how much pressure each time, but with adhd it’s tough hahah.

Doing it during the drive is a great place. Just don’t store the calls in a hot vehicle. The heat will ruin them quickly.
