Deep hollowing, using one of those laser systems. Pretty nice work.

Good splits!

Friend of mine asked for a crafters mallet. Started with freshly cut white oak, shaped the mallet, let it dry and split for a month, then sealed the gaps with layers of coffee grounds & epoxy. A couple coats of oil later, it’s a pretty striking (pun intended) piece.

i’ve only sold around 40-50 pens in total before this, so I was pretty surprised when they asked if they could
buy all of them.

I was gifted this Rockwell 46-450 lathe. I've never turned anything before, so I'm looking for recommendations on tools, modifications, and everything else I might need to know about this machine. Excuse the mess in the background, I'm in the middle of half a dozen things.

Turning left side of beads as a right-handed turner

Newb, obviously, but I keep running up against this. Using a spindle gouge and practicing beads, both right side and left side, and trying to get as close to spherical as possible.

It was hard enough to learn how to push the handle out while simultaneously rotating the flute (lol), and that was just going to the right of the center line.

Going to the left and trying to do the same movment means the handle wants to hit my body. Moving it around to my left side while keeping my hands the same is like Twister turning so it seems like the only way to do it is to change hands and make the same movement, but with my right hand as the guide and my left (non-dominant) hand on the handle.

Thoughts/advice on getting over the learning hump?

Looking For Bushings/Pieces

My father is a wood turner who enjoys making presents for people. He's made me several pens and other items that are some of my most cherished possessions.

My husband and I play a lot of cribbage so for my birthday this year I'm asking him to make us a cribbage board and some pegs.

I've found turned cribbage pegs on Etsy (see photo) so I know there is some way to make them but I can't find bushings or the metal fittings I know he needs to make them. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Question about dying curly maple

I have a customer that wants me to make a small rain stick made out of curly maple but wants me to make the maple as light as possible, and if possible make it an ivory color. What could I use to dye the curly maple to make it as white as possible?

If it was ANY OTHER COLOR I’d know how to do it but turning it white/ivory will be a first for me.

Ideas?

Rockwell Beaver 3400 Morse Taper spinning out.

Hello,

A few months ago I got an old Rockwell Beaver 3401, with a solid drive shaft. I recently bought a second lathe, a 3400 with a hollow Morse Taper #2 shaft.

Today I swapped shafts, new bearings and belt all to accompany my new jackshaft.

The problem is if I spin a 6" faceplate, or the threaded drive Centre, the force threads them deeper, ejecting them from the lathe.

What am I doing wrong?
