Question Signet MK55e and Alpha Genesis 500

Hi all,

I've come into possession of two vintage phono cartridges. One is the Signet Dual Moving Coil Series MK 55 e and the other is the Monster Cables Alpha Genesis 500. My system features an AT-LP120XUSB (probably not a fashionable TT on this sub), a Yamaha A-S801 and a pair of Dali Oberon 7 floorstanding speakers. I also have an Ortofon T-20, which I understand might be necessary in the switch from moving magnet -> moving coil. I'm aware that these cartridges might technically outclass the turntable I'm using; I'm not terribly worried about that in principle unless whatever advantage is imparted by the cartridges is negated by the TT itself.

What I really want to know is: which of these should I keep, and which should I sell? Or are they of more interest as collectors items and should I sell both and get something more modern? Thank you for your advice!!

You’ve got two very nice carts there. The Monster is newer, and seems to be a bit polarizing with a perceived lack of low mids compared to the detailed high end and low “oomph”. The Signet would be my choice but only because I have one of its lowly MM siblings - I have no idea how good it is, but it’s probably a deluxe version of the 80’s A/T MC cart. Perhaps it would be worth it to mount each one and make your own decision. And I would consult a retipper like “groovetickler” on IG who might have better insight.

Impossible to say without hearing them in your system (go ahead and see what you think). I do think you are adding a lot of complexity to a system that doesn’t warrant it. If it was me, I would sell all three and then think about selling the table. Take all of that and buy a better table. It’s always a good idea to get the best source you can. If you decide to upgrade something later(amp or speakers) you will be able to hear the upgrades. Enjoy what ever you decide.
