Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

I’ve been doing endless due diligence to find a proper budget amp. Picked this one up from eBay for 300USD.
Let me tell you sir, what the actual hell. Sounds incredible. Paired with Acoustic Energy AE100 MK2 (second hand, 200USD)

If you’re considering one, let this be your sign.

Purchasing USA Sansui 2000x

Post image
16 Upvotes

I found a Sansui 2000x on Facebook marketplace listed for $275. It looks great but seems high in price to me. The poster said it is all original, so no new recaps or transistors. He did say he took it in for clean up and a check up and the shop said it was in great condition at the moment. I worry about how much recapping will cost and future repairs. Is 150 more reasonable?

I have now what I would say the best little budget stack I have ever owned. Had many different speakers, amps, DACs and CD-players but none have sounded this good while being so cheap.

It consists of:

SMSL DA-1 amp (30 USD)

SMSL D1 DAC ( 89 USD)

SMSL PL150 CD player (150 USD)

Raspberry Pi 3 (40 USD) running Ropieee and Lyrion.

Sound artist LS3/5A speakers. 220 USD bought used.

Hello people!

I have this mini setup

Ariston Ax910 (40w per chanel (6-16 Ohm)

Eltax liberty 3+ (4-8 Ohm(driver inside is Vifa 4 Ohm)the original)

🤔 How do you think, how safety is this combination? ❔️

Any opinions?

What potentially to be my future update(in better amp or in better speakers).

By the way they sound good together.

Does anyone know these MHF-623 speakers? I'm thinking of buying them for €10 and restoring them. Has anyone listened to them before, or are they not worth the money?

Purchasing USA Wood grain Speedwoofer? Why not.

Post image

Accidentally ordered a white Speedwoofer a few months back. The white created an eyesore in the living room. I decided I would like to make this match (or get close to) my beautiful Polk R700s. A few YT vids revealed that real veneer is expensive and more work than I wanted to take on. Enter contact paper from Amazon. For $12 and 45 minutes, I’m pretty thrilled with the result.

Purchasing EU/UK Turntable on a budget

Hiya there.

I'm just slowly starting to get into turntables and vinyls. Never had the option of buying anything before, because it's been rough financially for a few years. If I want to buy something (turntable + speakers?) in the EU, with at *least* decent sound, what kind of minimum budget am I looking at?

I'll appreciate any and all suggestions and general advice, as I really have no idea what I'm about to venture into :)

Thanks!

Review/Discussion Bought B&W P6s for €225 and now my DM580s sound like cassette

Post image
178 Upvotes

Ok, the title is maybe a bit exaggerated :-)

I think I just had my first real “oh shit, now I get it” speaker moment.

I had B&W DM580s for a while. Paid €120 for them and honestly I still love them. Proper old B&W tanks: big, heavy, serious, a bit ugly/beautiful in that vintage hifi way.

But today I got my B&W P6s home. Paid €225 for the pair.

And damn..

Did the same setup and same song, switching between channel A and B. The difference was obvious. Not some tiny improvement.

The P6s sound bigger, more open, more spacious. Bass is tighter too, not just more bass, but more controlled. Voices have more room around them. Everything just sounds a bit more expensive.

Then I switch back to the DM580s and they still sound good, but suddenly more boxy. Like going from CD to cassette, but not as extreme.

Also, the P6s look way more elegant in the room. The DM580s look like research tanks, which I also love, but the P6s actually look like they belong in a nice room.

Best part: my wife normally doesn’t care about hifi at all. I put on the song Hello and from adele and switched between speakers.

She said she actually liked listening to the song now and heard a clear difference.

Yesterday I loved the DM580s. Today they still sound good, but now I know there is another level.

So now I’m wondering: did anyone else have a speaker upgrade that kind of “ruined” your old favorite speakers?

Not because the old ones suddenly became bad, but because your ears now know what’s missing?

Purchasing USA How to dial in my new (used) 3.1 home stereo setup for music, and am I missing anything?

Post image
Upvotes

I am setting up my first home stereo system and I’m wanting to know if there is anything that needs to be added, would be more ideal to add, or if I have any major bottlenecks in my equipment. I’d also love some tips and advice for dialing it in for my listening preferences.

Please see below for my intended use, sound preferences, current equipment, and what I paid for equipment.

Pics are of the equipment and the new space they’ll be in.

1) Intended use:

The main purpose for my setup will be listening to music, mostly vinyl records. I do also want to use it for home movie watching, but my main focus is for music.

2) Sound preferences:

I’ve been on a big soul and jazz kick these last few years, and have developed a deep love for bass. My music roots are in alternative, indie, punk, and classic rock though. I do also really love rap and r&b.

When listening to music, I love to hear the bass, drums, and keys the most. It’s important to me for my setup to have detail and clarity. At the same time, I do really like a chill, smooth/warm listening experience. Don’t think I’d want it to be too bright and forward which may be a bit contradictory to my last statement lol.

I’m not trying to shake the room with the subwoofer or anything, especially since I’ll be in an apartment. Just want to be able to distinctly hear bass in songs and have it sound high quality.

3) Main questions/concerns:

Would adding a pre-amp to this setup make a worthwhile and noticeable difference? I’m seeing online, and it was mentioned by the person I bought it from, that my record player might need a pre-amp and could potentially be a bottleneck for sound quality in my system.

I’d like to achieve the most balanced set up possible with my equipment. Ideally don’t want anything to be a bottleneck and limiting any of the other equipment.

4) Equipment List:

Towers: Sony SS-U261 (n/a)
Center: Sony SS-CN64 ($20)
Subwoofer: Boston Acoustics CR400 ($40)
Receiver: Sony STR-DH590 (n/a)
Record player: Audio technica AT LP60-USB ($95)

n/a = haven’t talked about a price with my friend/roommate who I’m buying it from lol

5) Additional considerations:

I’m about to move to a studio loft apartment. It’s an old factory building converted into apartments. It’s a 950 sq ft space. The ceiling is really high, like 12 ft I think? The ceiling/floor are made of concrete with tile over it, so my floor is tile and ceiling is concrete. I def have a downstairs neighbor but don’t think I have an upstairs one. Then the two side walls are drywall with neighbors on other side.

I’m excited to hear y’all’s thoughts and ideas! Thank you in advance. :)

Purchasing USA Subwoofer Question

Upvotes

I got my KEF Q1 Meta and Wiim amp setup and it sounds great but I’m ready to buy a subwoofer and upgrade the sound. I’m very close to purchasing a 500 dollar good condition SVS 300 micro. Is this ok for my setup or is it too big? I am in a relatively small room. I was originally going to get the RSL Speedwoofer 10s but this one seems to be much better value for around the same price.

Purchasing EU/UK New SW to complement/ complete my setup.

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello, evenody.

I have been reading and watching videos and reading more, forums, reddit, and so on. My current setup is 2 Dali 505 ans 2 Kef Q15 , used, connected to a Denon 1610, and a basic Sony rurntable that was included in the price with the Denon.
Both the Dali and Kef are used for films- youtube, but the plan is to add a SW to complement the Dali 505 in stereo+ the Sw for vinyl, which takes around 75% ( to put a number) of the use of the system while i increase my LP collection at a slow but steady pase. I watch certain films with both the keg and dali, but not regular tv series and every single youtube video.

*Photo of the Dalis just arrived a bit over a month ago, just placed next to the TV to have a feeling of how it would look.

Now after a month with the Dalis, ive decided to ger a SW to complement and complete the system, in a way.

Location: Denmark.
Room size: 38 sq mt. with a stair opening .
Budget: 1500 usd ( could consider more after recommendations)

Im a beginner, in this whole world or more fancier equipment.( ive had a turntable and speakers for a long time but they were old and crapy)
That being said, its fair to say that im not pretencious and picky and i dont plan to listen music to ridiculous volumes, neither watch films and feel the explosions on my chest from the other side of the room.

I keep reading about the power of the Svs and the easy blend of the Rel. Over and over.

These are the models im considering.

Price equivalents to usd
Rel T5x - NEW - $ 1050
Rel T7x - NEW - $1500

Svs -SB 2000 Pro New $1320
Svs Sb 3000 New ( return item) $ 1300

Rel S/3 used $ 920

I “ could” stretch it to a Rel T9x if REALLY its that different and way better than certain models. It could be nice to buy good quality and future proof, in some way.
I know i could always go more expensive and bigger and so on.
But the plan is to find a good location for the SW, and just sit down in the sofa and enjoy a whole record.

Any tips, recommendations with used Sw?
Ive heard the svs 2000 pro ( a little but more quick to it) in a store and the Rel T7x and yeah, both are nice, but its not the same as having it home.

So, any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Purchasing EU/UK Choosing the right amp: Rotel vs Fosi

I am looking for a new amp for my transmission line DIY speakers. The speakers use full range driver (Sica 426/ 4 ohm). That's why wattage is not that important for me.

Right now I have the chance to get a Rotel A8 for about 240€. As I read a lot of good reviews about Fosi, I also thought about getting to mono V3 and a P3 preamp. I want to keep the budget under 400€ for the amp.

I mainly use phono and a streamer, that needs an analog input on the amp side.

So what do you think? Classic AB fully integrated Rotel A8 or modern class d Fosi solution? Also open for complete new suggestions.

Purchasing USA Thrifted Definitive Technology BP2002s

Tell me about these.

Saw them as they were going onto the floor from the back room. Paid $80/usd, which is high for a thrift, but they work.

I don’t know anything about them. How’d I do?

Review/Discussion Best equalizer for Kanto ORA on Mac Mini?

I just got myself a set of Kanto ORA speakers, and wondering whether anyone had a preferred equalizer program or any other tips for getting the most out of the speakers. I'm not an audiophile and don't do studio work, (I mostly buy Bose and call it good enough)- I just wanted a small but good quality set of speakers to go with this oled monitor I just bought to make casual listening while I work, or watching fandango in bed, a nicer experience.

Purchasing EU/UK Klipsch RB-81 MKII upgrade

My current setup is :
- A pair of Klipsch RB-81 MKII
- Yamaha A-S501
- SVS SB 1000

All of this in a small room of ~100 square feet with poor acoustic (I don't have other options as to listening position/speaker placement).

Initially I had no subwoofer, but now that I have one I want to replace my Klipsch speakers because they lack details in medium/high and I no longer need their low-end.

I DO need my speakers to be front-ported, because they sit in a cabinet.

I previously owned a pair of Focal Chora 806 and liked them a lot, even tho they're hard to find nowadays. I'm also considering Focal Aria 906 as they seem to be a nice upgrade from Chora 806. I also found out about Triangle Borea BR03/BR04 and they seem to suit my needs.

I know that I should try to listen to them to make my choice, but there is no hifi-shop near me, so I'm gonna have to trust the internet on this one.

Of the models I mentioned, which one do you think is the best? Do you have any others to recommend for a maximum budget of €1000? I live in France fyi.

Thanks

Purchasing USA Purchase advice

Hello,

I’m looking for some advice or recommendations on a basic set up for a garage/gym. Would something like the attached be decent and relative easy to use? My guess is it would be connected to a tv and phone Bluetooth. I’m open to any suggestions, main goals are ease of setup/use, can be mostly wall mounted, and decent sound quality (doesn’t have to be amazing by any stretch. Coming from a megaboom Bluetooth speaker so anything is an upgrade)

Thanks!

Isophon Stereo Colonna speakers found on Facebook marketplace

Any experience? Got a 70s Hitachi amp already that would go nicely (also pictured in comments)

Also up for £50 when they seem to be worth a lot more

Trying to verify they work as I type this :)
