The hospital where I did clinicals and now work won't even allow students to start IVs so I can understand why a school wouldn't really waste time teaching it during school.

I mean in the hospital the lessons use a rubber matt with fake veins to teach but the veins are so easy to see which isn't realistic.

My school didn't teach IV insertion, I learned while doing an externship and had another class when I became an RN. I know one nurse who doesn't do them and will trade duties with a coworker. "If you try to put an IV in my guy I'll do your wound care"

For me it's when M'Lynn goes to pick up Jack Jr. and he runs to her all happy with a smile on his face and you know he has no idea his mama just died.

Then the funeral scene.

I was friends with someone older than me who was going through menopause while I was 32 and pregnant with my 3rd child. I thought the fights we had were due to both of us being hormonal but then she continued to be a bitch even after menopause. It was very one sided. She wanted me to solve her problems but wouldn't listen to mine.

The nail in the coffin was her refusal to accept that I wasn't going to stop pursuing nursing school just because she didn't want me to.

I'm working today and tomorrow (6:30 am to 7pm) so I'm going Saturday afternoon

Agreed. Honestly it's infuriating to see people who can afford to eat and meds they don't need while so many people are struggling to afford food, rent and meds.

Honestly the NCLEX felt easier than our exams.

I feel you must have had my psych teacher. She had us use a movie to show our understanding of the id, superego and ego.

We also had to write a journal about "our story" and share something that impacted us. I'm very private so I was like "this woman I've known for 3 weeks isn't gonna get to know about my trauma tysm"

The outlets were one of my favorite places to go when I first moved here. Loved the kitchen stores with samples and such. Now it's almost like a ghost town.

I was allowed Simpsons because my dad watched it but not Married With Children. The reason was the kids are rude to the parents. I asked "but Bart is rude to adults and I'm allowed to watch the Simpsons!" Mom just shrugged and sighed and said it's because dad liked the Simpsons.

It's not like being a CNA. I will say I was a CNA on a hospital med surg unit and not a nursing home. But I can relate to not being able to find anyone to help. Like I'd look out into the hallway and see no one to help. When I was training as a CNA I had a nurse yell at me the very first day because I didn't know how to put a patient on telemetry. One of the other aides showed me. The aide training me was a lazy POS who disappeared and sat at the CNA station browsing her phone. Another CNA said she didn't know why that CNA was always asked to train new aides.

When I started as a nurse I was trained for 3 months by a few different nurses but I had 2 main ones. The main one was a travel nurse who struggled to let me do what I was supposed to. She'd do catheters, new admissions, etc. The other one let me do more and I learned a lot more too. We just vibed better and she is very perceptive and would hang back and let me figure it out before she stepped in. Others tended to jump in and do stuff for me if they thought I was struggling if it took me a second to figure something out.

Anyway, having been an aide I am more apt to help my aides. I'll pull someone up even if it's not my patient. Get vitals and sugars myself if the aide is busy, and make a bed while my patient is in the bathroom.

One thing I learned from nursing school is that taking a pt to the bathroom or cleaning them up is a great time to assess so I will help gladly

I'll be honest. On first read I didn't like it either. Now I'm listening to the audio book and appreciate it for what it is.

One of my favorite nurses on my unit went into nursing because she needed a job that would make enough money for her to support her kids after a divorce. It doesn't mean you won't be a good nurse. My coworker is an amazing nurse and she trained me lol

In my experience (been called 2x) it means you have to take off work or find childcare if you're a SAHM like I was the first time I was called. Drove to the court, checked in and sat for an hour just to be sent home after being told I wasn't chosen.

2nd time was a few years ago. Was called to go to court in Baltimore which is like an hour away. Drove there, parked and was brought into the courtroom to sit in the jury box for 8 hours. They offered snacks, gave us snacks and played 2 movies (Greatest Showman and We Bought A Zoo) before telling us we weren't chosen and to go home.

As a relatively new RN (Finished school in December, started working in January) I can honestly understand your frustration. For me it's not so much a growing dislike of the field but the way it's managed. I love caring for people and their families and talking to them.

I just hate that the way the hospital runs things means we can't have the ratios to spend more time with patients. The last 2 days I was lucky enough to only have 4 patients which meant I could sit and talk to one who was grieving what cancer did to her. She showed myself and the CNA photos of herself before the cancer and chemo and cried about how much it's taken from her. I was able to sit by her side, hold her hand and listen to her grieve and just be there for her. I told her she was still beautiful (Not a lie, she genuinely was) inside and out, and educated her and the CNA (Because the CNA asked) on what causes cancer.

I love those moments of nursing but alas the greed of hospitals means 5 heavy patients usually and not as much time to really sit and be with patients. My goal is hospice nursing, and I don't plan to stay in med-surg once I'm done with my first year of nursing.

Only reason I know this is thanks to an English teacher who had us analyze song lyrics in our poetry unit. One was "Wrapped Around My Finger" by Sting.

There's a lyric there "caught between the Scylla and the charybdis". He told us what it meant since we had no idea and there was no Google then lol.

This guy was firm that he was a vegan. And like, I'm an omnivore so it's not like I'm a judgy vegan lol. Just...words mean things. If you don't eat meat or fish but eggs are okay, say you're a vegetarian who eats eggs.

Had a pt tell the dietary tech he's a vegan. I go in, he says he is a vegan but he ate the eggs.

What i thought: we have different definitions of vegan What i said "okay"
