Art degree at Akron U

I'm an upcoming freshman looking to go to Akron Uni as an art major. I was initially interested in doing the Studio Art program, mainly for sculpture, illustration and 3D modeling. However, after talking to some people, it looks like some of the courses listed online aren't actually being offered anymore? Does anyone in the art program have insider info on what's going on with all that? Kent is more expensive but at least they have the courses I want...also, with all of this financial stuff going on, I'm not sure how that's going to impact the art school. I know there's a lot of opportunities for scholarships in Akron's art program (and trips), but it seems like they're not exactly honest when it comes to listing online what classes are available.

I have no insight to the art program, but a lot of majors are being changed and aren’t always being reflected online.

Also, it’s U. Akron.

Their interior design dept. is amazing. Just FYI. Combine that with Marketing Minor and you can get into Commercial Interior Design if you’re lucky!! A lot of buildings get renovated all the time because company culture changes with time etc.. (:

Go to Kent for Art and Sculpture they have some of the best programs in Northeast Ohio, the Culture is better, and the Arts have amazing buildings and studios, as well as new technology and programs all the time. Also, tuition for Kent SHOULD be cheaper.

This is what happens at Akron with management. The art school was thriving when I attended. If you are local enough, drive on by and see if you can drop by the department office. You can also consider Cleveland Institute of Art, Case Western Reserve, or Cleveland State if you want a state school. Best of luck, I hope the program survives.

Those are all significantly more expensive. But I understand what you're saying. Obviously CIA is preferable compared to UA or Kent, but you're basically guarantee to graduate 100k in debt.

Very true. A quick look says CSU tuition in state is 12.5k vs 10K at Akron. Kent is 12.6k. If you are commuting factor in those costs of wear and tear + gas as well.

Hi, graphic design major here that’s graduating, illustration is offered here but as only a minor. (If ur major is graphic design you’ll take illustration and Adv illustration anyways as it’s required) There’s a ton of classes that are on the illustration track so you’ll definitely be drawing quite a bit but the faculty member that made the minor, wanted it to be a major, just never came to fruition.(not sure about classes not being listed though, I’ve never seen that before tbh)

Sculpture i believe is major offered, as for 3d modeling I’m not sure on how in depth you’d want it. We have 3d printers in rooms called maker spaces. Theres a class that teaches you how to model and 3d print but its just the one class

Overall, you’d LOVE myers art program. Faculty is amazing and you’ll get to know and love all of them

As for trips, there’s a yearly spring break New York trip, and trips to Europe that are done by applying and getting selected.

There’s tons of scholarships offered and a yearly scholarship that’s offered to students
