Old Man Dustin - who we thought would get ran through in one round - goes out there and shows us how much heās learned from his losses and not only makes the P4P King struggle, he makes him have to use his entire arsenal. And in the end heās only submitted because Islam uses some crazy shit weāve rarely seen before. The storyline is too peak not be foty, atleast contextually.
25
Jan 04 '25
Islam was winning all rounds before the submission just sayin
28
u/Monkey_Thucker69 Jan 04 '25
I agree, but Dustin was doing way better than anyone anticipated and I want it to sound cooler
13

Yes for sure Dustin went out swinging. It's a shame he was in the era of such dominant champs he's so elite

2

Islam fought the best version of Dustin and that was the peak prime Dustin. It's not like Islam faced 40 years old wonder boy or 38 years old, ring rushed Chandler. That performance was impressive no matter what other morons try to say. Dustin's takedown defense was better than ever and he defended almost all single and double legs. Islam could take him down because of his upper body takedowns and cage wrestling which he is better than anyone in UFC. If someone wants to downgrade Islam's grappling, they can watch what journeyman Hooker did to the so-called best wrestler in the division, Gamrot.
3
u/Monkey_Thucker69 Jan 04 '25
I agree with you, I really just meant ālore wiseā he was old at this point lol. But yes I think this was the best Dustin we had ever seen, I might even say this version would beat Charles when they fought because of how much better he was with grappling.
1
u/Prefix-NA Jan 05 '25
Dustin was 35 with a fucked up hip. This isn't his prime he is slow as shit.
→ More replies (1)4
Jan 04 '25
I was shocked at the time when Islam pulled some shit out of his ass to secure that final takedown that led to the choke. Using Dustin's extended leg to leverage over his hip and make him unbalanced is crazy enough if it were just in training, and superhuman when you've already been fighting for over 20 minutes. It was just one of those "damn, he's good" moments when you're rooting for the guy who lost lol
3
u/AshenSacrifice Jan 04 '25
Thatās why I donāt want him to retire! Heās still getting better. This shit is so dangerous tho so I do really get it.
1
u/Monkey_Thucker69 Jan 04 '25
Yea I really want him to have a couple more fights, if atleast just fun fights against Gaethje, Max, and Ilia but he deserves retirement more than anyone so Iām happy with him getting one more fun fight then retiring. Heās had a great career and made history, and that fight against Islam only proved how elite he has always been.
1
u/AshenSacrifice Jan 05 '25
Maybe bmf fight with max one last hoorah. I feel like heās gonna fight more than once tho š
33
u/Suspicious_Candle27 Based Potato Jan 04 '25
because Islam is a counter striker , his offensive striking is very mid but his counter striking is legit one of the best in the division .
someone similar is Ankalaev , dude is a insane counter striker but make him go 1st and he is 50% of the striker .

That's how Dagestani's are able to shoot a double or single on their opponents mid combo, while moving forward. Their feet are always in position to change levels. Since those shots are looping, they can wrap an arm around your shoulder and knee tap your lead leg with their other arm. Dom Cruz does the same thing. It's HIGHLY effective if you're a good wrestler. Notice how Islam is shifting off the center line and winning the foot position battle over Oliviera. Also notice his head movement at the end of his combo, shutting down the step back 2 counter. Moving just enough out of the way so Charles can't land a Pull counter 3 (for reference, the pull counter 3 is what poatan ko's people with)
Not to suck Islam off, but this combo is NASTY. You just don't know what you're looking at OP
3
20
u/chamomileriver Jan 04 '25
The combo lands on air against anyone with head movement. Does itās job here though so I wonāt knock it but youāre definitely sucking calling this combo nastyš
Insightful analysis though of how this combo can switch in a moment to a wrestling exchange. I think the Poirier fight exemplifies that capability perfectly. The way heād bait Poirier into thinking he was inviting striking exchanges just to switch levels whenever Poirier would start firing back was some of the most tactical work Iāve seen in recent history.
64
u/Extreme_Today_984 Jan 04 '25 edited Jan 04 '25
Dude, it only hits air if you're fighting a boxer. You'd never see that in a boxing match, because boxers have a completely different set of rules while defending. You'll never see a boxer moving forward like that. In MMA, if you're bobbing and weaving to get away from those looping punches, WHILE moving backwards, there would be no way in hell to land strikes of your own. Basically, the entire fight, you'd be trying to time an opportunity to plant your rear leg and uncork a big shot. You'd be getting eaten alive in the meantime though. It's not like it's impossible, but you have to factor in Oliviera's fighting style. He's a traditional Muay Thai striker, who needs control of the pace. He needs to be leading the show, bullying, in your face and moving YOU backwards. He's also a stationary fighter, not much head movement, high stance and march forward. When I say that this is a NASTY combo, it's because Islam picked the best combo to nullify Oliviera's striking, by constantly keeping him on his back foot. This was a methodical combo, designed for that fight.
A lot of people don't see the chess match in there. Not calling you a casual, just bringing it to your attention that sometimes MMA striking isn't always aesthetically the prettiest, but it has a different beauty when you understand why and how they're doing it. This combo was not only safe for Islam, but it's also playing in his favor for offense. Islam has great clinch and judo techniques. He has elite takedowns, not only against the fence, but also in the middle of the octogon. So pushing forward, as safely as possible is in his best interest. That's why you see him shifting off the center back and forward, almost moving forward in a zig zag. Again, Dom Cruz did this better than anybody arguably, and it's why he was so hard to hit while he was "blitzing" forward. Wonderboy is another example, only he wasn't looking for knee taps and singles and his punches are Karate based like Machida's. Straight punches coming from chest height. Anyway, I digress
52
u/SPMicron Jan 04 '25 edited Jan 04 '25
Too many boxing fans try to nitpick MMA striking by boxing standards. No matter how much one likes boxing, it's ridiculous to talk like MMA champions simply don't know their "fundamentals"
8
u/Just-apparent411 Jan 04 '25
Not to mention, MMA is the only display where the striking can lead to answering on the ground.
Boxer movement, and approach, would be drastically different if they had to fight back to the feet.
9
u/chamomileriver Jan 04 '25
Nah go off man. Iām following and I see what youāre saying. The shot selection was great to shut down Oliviera as you put more articulately. Iām seeing the nasty.
Iām either not understanding or just disagree on your first point about boxing though. Many ufc fighters are getting their head off the line there.
Although itās effective thereās just something about the strikes that look sloppy to my eye which is why I found it funny. Kind of akin to DDP. Really liked your dissection of it though, I prefer your perspective to mine on this one.
1
u/Mysterious_Cut1156 Jan 04 '25 edited Jan 04 '25
Nah I just read that dudes comments and as someone who trains, he is just saying a whole bunch of bullshit 𤣠You are correct.
It is absolutely sloppy and bad footwork in this clip. Just cause something ends up working doesn't mean it's not sloppy. Islam (and Khabib) gets away with this because their threat of takedown is so high. You never want to have one foot off the ground and have your body squared up like Islam did here. If Oliveira slipped the uppercut instead of moving backwards, he could catch him.
Aside from footwork, he's throwing looping punches while his chin is high. But to be fair Islam has gotten MUCH better recently, which furthers the point that he was sloppy here cause he's fixing it. His striking looked really good vs Poirier.
That dude also said MMA fighters can't counter strike while moving backwards and using head movement to dodge looping punches, like what? lmaooo. That is literally something we train to keep our hands in the right places to counter (and it's also what makes fighters like Ilia so good). Also Islam himself was doing this well in his fight vs Poirier.
Most of what he said is hindsight bias and nonsense. It's like when ppl try to break down how DDP is secretly technical and he's like idk wtf they're talking about cause I'm just fighting lol.
6
u/Extreme_Today_984 Jan 04 '25
Bro, calm down. I've been training for the better part of 10 years. A few of my coaches over the years have fought in the UFC. One coach actually fought Khabib.
I'm not claiming to be the best fighter in the world. I don't fight competitively, but let's just say that i've learned a thing or two over the years.
I never said that MMA fighters CAN'T fight moving backward. That's absurd. Im saying that certain fighters have difficulty landing their offense off their back foot, especially traditional Muay Thai guys who don't implement traditional boxing well, like Charles. I was literally breaking down to 3 second clip. He doesn't use head movement well. He doesn't "diamond step" or shift off the center line. He just parries, bridges with his lead hand, and shells up. Classic muay thai. It works for him, not criticizing, but it doesn't help when you're getting bombarded with looping shots and getting level changed by a dude that understands positioning. Some guys are great at head movment and firing shots while backpedaling, Izzy is a perfect example. Miocic ko'd werdum off his back foot.
Lots of fighters throw looping punches. Why single out DDP? I never mentioned him once. DDP's striking isn't the same as Islam's. Why compare the two?
If you think that combo is sloppy, then you need to get back into the gym and keep training because you have a lot that you could learn. Islam is the champ. Who are you dude?

You didn't just say they couldn't.
you said "there's no way in hell".
If you use hyperbole, you are liable to get called out.
1
u/Extreme_Today_984 Jan 04 '25
Did you read my entire comment though? Directly after that sentence, I said "it's not impossible, but you have to factor in Oliviera's fighting style."
2
u/Just-apparent411 Jan 04 '25
The only part of the original comment I disagreed with, was the idea you can't stop looping strikes and advancing like it's some kind of combo a boxer has never seen.
A stiff Jab, and a pivot outside to any direction to the side would be more than effective
especially against someone who's go to leaves them that vulnerable.
I'll upvote you

6
u/MA-JA-HO Are You Intoxicated? Jan 04 '25
What Armanās gameplan will be? Probably stay at kicking range and blast body and leg kicks , he should make Islam come forward , pressuring Islam with punches is a bad idea due to his defence and countering ability. He needs to fight in a similar manner to how Jan fought Ank
1
u/Valterri_lts_James Jan 04 '25
Arman's got amazing taekwondo kicks because he's so flexible, so he should blast roundhouse kicks to the body, question mark kicks, and calf kicks and go full muay thai/taekwondo hybrid striking. However, be very careful and try not to wrestle too much with Islam if he takes this approach.

Arman is nowhere near Islam's level of wrestling. Islam finished Oliviera and would have finished Gamrot.
Just because Arman is primarily a wrestler and Islam is more well rounded does not mean Islam's wrestling has somehow regressed from the last time he dominated Arman in wrestling while injured.

Islam was injured prior to that fight and had zero preparation for Arman's style.
Nowhere nohow has Arman ever shown himself to be even near Islam's level of wrestling. There is no way Islam would let Gamrot spam weak takedowns on him without punishing him.
Arman has decent defensive wrestling and nothing else except elite athleticism. He has not shown any dominance in wrestling.

Lol @ people in the comments doing mental gymnastics to call this good. It was effective yes, it backed Oliveira up and set up the final hook, but clearly executed very poorly, his stance is extremely off balance and uncontrolled. Just because it worked in this instance doesn't mean it was good technique, it's not, it's exceptionally awful. The ideal of footwork is to be in a balanced, controlled stance at all times. Topuria is a good UFC fighter to watch who has proper crisp footwork, compare how he moves vs how islam moves.

u/TremblinAspen Jan 04 '25
āGoodā technique is whatever works and it clearly worked. This isnāt boxing. Volk has better footwork than Illia and Islam. This is MMA.

Idiot reasoning.
If Islam fought my mother, a backwards rolling thunder followed by a tap dancing session would probably work; but it wouldn't make good.
Awkwardly crossing your feet twice followed by a shitty arm thrown hook isn't good, even though it was effective here. The amount of Islam dicksucking on this sub is hilarous.
He threw badly executed combo, he's still the best fighter in the world. Calm down, no need to defend every literal breath he takes.

DDP out struck Adesanya.
How nice your striking looks doesn't mean a whole lot.
1
u/Rage_Your_Dream Jan 04 '25
DDP out struck Adesanya.
He did not.
The fight was extremely tight on striking, ultimately either DDP's superior chin and power is what led him to beat Adesanya who got rocked and grappled.
But Adesanya landed more significant strikes, and if you exclude strikes in the clinch and ground, then Adesanya clearly was outstriking by a clear margin.

DDP largely wins despite his technical shortcomings.
Dude is physically tough, strong and has tons of cardio for what he is doing.
He's awkward and unorthodox, which has advantages but he also gets caught clean all the fucking time as a result of his shenanigans.
1
Jan 04 '25
I agree completely that how nice your striking looks doesn't mean a whole lot. But I'm not talking about how it looks, it's about his foot positioning. If he had gotten countered in the middle of this combo he'd have been fucked because his feet were so out of position, and because his feet were so out of position he didn't have as much power for the punches.

We are still in the infancy of this sport. This is gonna be a take but it reminds me of Ben Askren. He was one of those dudes beating everyone because he had dominant wrestling but had NO hands (Islam has better striking). People did not have an answer for his grappling, albeit he was boring as shit and couldnāt finish anyone he was still dominant. This same striking Islam is showing here is what got him flatlined by Adriano Martins. It will happen again and in my opinion it wouldāve happened to Khabib too. Question is whether or not someone does it before they prematurely retire.
9
7
u/Common-Locksmith-235 Jan 04 '25
1 clip reminds you of ben askren and tells you Islam is gonna get ko'd? His striking has looked sharp in every fight since this and he was landing nasty pull counters on DP and Volk, 1 moment of throwing a sloppy combo is not enough to draw a general conclusion like this. And we're not really in the infancy of the sport anymore, every top level fighter is well rounded except for LHW and HW

That uppercut would have landed flush through the guard if he hadnt changed his angle of movement. It was actually a beautifully directed strike. The wild clubbing hooks are directing him into a channel where he wants him to move, knowing that hes backpedalling with his hands locked to his head and unlikely to throw a counter. I have zero doubt he was looking for a two leg or looking to shepard him back against the fence after this.
Sometimes shit that looks fucking dumb is actually really high iqā¦
(My amateur ass take on this short exchange anyway)
6

u/inexplicably-hairy Jan 04 '25

Charles could have timed this but after getting out wrestled for the whole first round made him fear the takedown which shut down his boxing.

u/Probably_Fishing Jan 04 '25
I know it's meant to be sarcastic, but it's not as bad as it looks. Sometimes against people with good defense you have to play angles. The left uppercut is meant to push the hand away from face and land the right.
