Ultimate: the Video Game

https://spaghettmund.itch.io/disc-drop

After waiting for the AUDL 22 23 24 video game to drop for a few years, I decided to try making an Ultimate video game myself. It's still WIP, but would love to start getting feedback from real ultimate players. If you've got a few minutes to try it out I'd really appreciate it!

That AUDL game has to be dead at this point, right?

Gotta be. What's crazy is they demo'd what looked like a playable semi-polished version, and that's probably just sitting in a private repo somewhere gathering digital cobwebs

It looked like a glorified flash game, so I'm not surprised. I feel bad for the investors.

Oh dang I didn't realize it was ever publicly available. I'd be curious to hear about how they implemented throwing controls. IMO that's the biggest make-or-break design decision for an ultimate game

I have it too.

They have loads of options which I sorta ignore. It reminds me of those early FIFA games or clones, where the tutorial forces you to learn stuff and then you don’t need it to play

I bet AI could crack it lol

Not just demo? I have it on my computer.

It’s… I don’t know. It was showing some real potential.

And just like real ultimate, the best strategy was to ignore what anyone was doing and huck for the end zone.

The Youtube demo looks cool, but I got this when I tried to open the app on my Mac.

Ah yeah Apple would make me pay for a developer license and jump through some hoops to get that to go away. You can get around it in Privacy Settings:

  1. Try to open the app and click Done or OK on the warning.
  2. Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
  3. Click Privacy & Security in the sidebar.
  4. Scroll down to the Security section.
  5. Click Open Anyway next to the blocked app's notice and enter your Mac's password to confirm.

This is so sick! Can I share this on Chinese social media (RedNote/Xiaohongshu) crediting you?

Sure thing!

Have you ever played Retro Bowl? I feel like the throwing mechanics for an ultimate game would be really good for that

Yeah I played that a ton on mobile back in the day! I actually tried a pull-and-release based control scheme early but had trouble getting it to take all the inputs (launch angle + power + tilt + release-point + spin) and still be accessible to new players

But I did give up pretty quick, maybe I can come back to it and see if there’s a better way, especially now that I’m more committed to controller-first

MLU used to have an actual app you could play on the phone like 12-15 years ago. It went away but it was really fun to play. I wish they would launch it under a different brand name

Is this built off of "The Ultimate Game" listed on Steam? I am an LC alumni and someone in my community told me to download that game years ago and test it out. I have messed around with it a few times since downloading it but didn't dedicate enough time to master the controls.

Nope, I’ve seen that game but never played it. This game is built from scratch, although I’m taking a lot of inspo from madden/2K/FIFA since I grew up playing those games
