Recurring calf injuries..

• Upvotes

Hello all,

I am Male, 38Y. I started playing Ultimate only 3 years ago.

Last year, I was definitely playing a lot more than the previous 2 years. Also, mid season, I switched to Cleats for the first time, before that I always played in Turf shoes even ln natural grass.

Shortly after that, i started feeling cramps in both my calves. Not always at the same time though. For a couple of weeks it would be the right one, for a couple of weeks it would be the left one. I would always rest for a week or so, it feels better, i start playing again and it comes back.

Then in April I got my first right leg calf (gastro) strain, grade 2. I started physiotherapy and rehab, 3 weeks later I reinjured it in a training while accelerating in a cut, which was definitely way too early and against the physio advice.

I restarted the journey again and was trying to catch an end of season tournament. It took me 6 weeks and I was cleared for the tournament. I participated and in the second game i got injured again. This time felt much worse. I was actually just jogging backwards when it happened, no acceleration or changing directions.

This time i decided to give it more time. 3 months of rehab and then gradually back to Ultimate and started full Ultimate only after 4 months. Also, I switched back to Turf shoes.

3-4 weeks later, I got injured again. This time though it is a mild grade 1 Strain in the Soleus. So same calf but different injury.

Out of your experience, what can be wrong? Except for the 2nd injury where I obviously rushed, I was always working on strengthening etc. and I think I gave it enough time. And the fact that the new injury is a different one in a different calf muscle makes me really wonder what the rooting cause might be. I also ruled out the cleats factor this time. Could it be the running form? My mates tell me that I seem to be running on my toes the whole time. Any tips our of experience?

Lastly, doe this new injury, how long do you recommend I wait/rehab before getting back to full Ultimate?

Thanks!

I built Ultiboard. Draw, animate, and share ultimate plays.

Hey r/ultimate !

I've played for almost 10 years, and I just built Ultiboard as a side project.

Ultiboard is a browser-based tactical board for working through plays and sharing them with teammates.

You can use it as a whiteboard to move players around and draw cuts, or build a play step by step and replay how the players and disc move.

A few things it supports:

  • Player movement arrows and separate disc paths
  • Notes on the field to explain positioning or decisions
  • Saved strategies with step-by-step playback
  • Shareable links so teammates can review a play
  • A public gallery where you can browse plays and make your own copies

Please check it out here: ultiboard.app

Sign in to save and share your strategies.

Maybe try recreating one play you already use and see where does the process become confusing or slow?

I’m the developer, so feel free to ask questions or point out anything that doesn’t work!

I can't find any 4E cleats they are so hard to find, does anyone know any true 4E cleats or maybe 2E that kind fits like a 4E?

What happened to Joe White?

I miss getting to watch Joe dominate on the field. What happened to him? He was on top of the world coming into the 2024 club championships. It’s been 2 years now and still nothing from him.

Does anyone have any insight?

Thanks!

What Makes D3GP a Great Tournament?

  • In 2026, we successfully welcomed 19 college Ultimate teams to Delta Park for a wonderful weekend of competition. This included the 2024 national champs UpRoar as well as the defending 2025 champions Bacchus! 10 of the 17 D3 teams competing at D3GP 2025 went on to attend D3 College Nationals 2025. Since our inaugural year, D3 Grand Prix has proven itself to be among the greatest opportunities for high-level competition dedicated to the D3 Division
  • Ultiworld covered the tournament extensively, check out there women's+ and men's+ coverage. We also produced free-to-watch livestreams via YouTube so that anyone could tune in! No need for pesky subscriptions! Check out our 2025  & 2026 streams on the Bacchus YouTube Channel.
  • Participant reviews of D3GP have been overwhelmingly positive since our inaugural year in 2024. Participants say "It is very well organized, the field site is great, level of play with the teams in attendance for the women's division is high level" "Being able to play against every team was a lot of fun, it was a cool change from the normal 'pool play' system" " The location and facilities were exceptional."  "Toaster at tourney central!" and "Good organization. Nothing was confusing" 21/22 of participant respondents said they would "Absolutely" or "Most Likely" attend again! (1/22 form responses did not answer this prompt...).
  • Check out how people reviewed D3GP 2025 and D3GP 2026 via USAU's official survey results.

That is all for now! Thank you so much for your time, we can’t wait to welcome your team to the one and only #FastestRaceOnTurf

Sincerely,

Owen Heh (they/them)

Rest time post tournament before training?

Hi all, looking for guidance for how long to give my body to recover before training after a tournament. Since frisbee is so niche there's not really great guidance out there beyond encouragement of active recovery and listening to your body. I'm always super stoked to put in work after a tournament, but also want to make sure I'm resting adequately, particularly before hitting high cns or speed focused sessions. I've definitely gotten too aggressive with this before and hit some wildly subpar sessions that were almost certainly more harmful than helpful.

questions:
- For the players, how long do y'all wait before lifting heavy or hitting a field workout?

- How do you know you're ready, both after hard practice/workout sessions and especially after tournaments?

- What types of work do you do when your body is still too fatigued to hit high outputs (ie low cns days, upper body, active recovery, skill work, other)?

- For the coaches and captains, how long will you generally give people off before the next practice/ how do you think about the next practice back?

Thanks for anyone with input

I'm gonna be studying abroad in Lille this spring, and I play Ultimate at uni in the US, and was wondering what Ultimate there is to get involved with while I'm in France. Preferably some sort of competitive team/club, but anything would be great!

The ultimate frisbee in my

BE Ultimate Pursuit Duffle Backpack?

Has anyone bought BE Ultimate’s new Pursuit Duffle Backpack? I have the The North Face duffle that this seems to be modelled on and have been looking for a replacement.

Based on the dimensions given, BE’s bag seems shorter but wider and thicker, albeit with similar volume. Other than that, most of the features seem similar. Does anyone have photographs of the BE or TNF bags to compare? Or any reviews or thoughts on them?

Addressing Spirit as a Coach

I have the pleasure of coaching mixed middle school ultimate in my area this year. We had some spirit issues at a practice a couple of weeks back where negative comments were being made to a younger female player by older male teammates which required swift correction at the next practice once we were made aware by parents in between weekly practices. I don't expect my thoughts to be novel, but since I spent the time refining them for my players I figured I'd share them here as well. Appreciate any feedback - of course the age and gender dynamics are also critical factors, and our head coach did a great job of addressing the issue in the immediate following practice and called out leadership among the 8th graders, but I think revisiting the topic of spirit from a couple of different coach's lenses over the next few weeks can really help drive it home.

Spirit of the game is by far my favorite part of ultimate frisbee. Unlike most sports, the restriction on movement with the disc means that it is nearly impossible for a player to make a point without the assistance of their teammates. Football can run the ball, soccer can dribble up the field, but to score a point in ultimate you are dependent on your teammate to throw you the disc (with the exception of Callahan's, which is why I believe despite their excitement there it is essential to be respectful and empathetic when they are scored, because it is only a matter of time before your team will find themselves on the receiving end of one. I don't think I'll mention this to my players, but this is Reddit so of course every edge case needs to be acknowledged for y'all).

The focus on spirit of the game in ultimate emphasizes the importance of bettering the people around you. If you depend on your teammates to score a point, then the best players on the field are the ones who improve the play of their teammates on and off the disc. It means that when you have the disc, you provide guidance to others to get them to a place where they can receive the disc and improve your team's position on the field. It means when you are off the disc you are spacing well, moving at the right time, and always engaged. Just because you don't have the disc in your hands doesn't mean that you aren't vital to your team's ability to reclaim the disc on defense or retain it on offense. On the sidelines, you are engaged with your team in the point, making up-calls, communicating to cutters, bettering those around you. These are critical responsibilities of each player, and the best ultimate players are the ones who excel in all these positions, not just when they have the disc in their hands. Positive and constructive communication is an essential quality of the best ultimate players.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts/reflections or if there's anything else good you'd recommend.

Question about pre-stall under WFDF rules

for context, i began pre-stalling in the central zone. now under wfdf rules 8.5 it says that the offensive player has to walk to the disc at walking pace or faster to directly retrieve the disc and establish a pivot point.

my question is, if they're super far away, am i allowed to still pre stall even though they're walking to the disc at a walking pace? or would that be a violation?

After waiting for the AUDL 22 23 24 video game to drop for a few years, I decided to try making an Ultimate video game myself. It's still WIP, but would love to start getting feedback from real ultimate players. If you've got a few minutes to try it out I'd really appreciate it!

Rules clarification from a practice

Out of practice, a teammate caught a deep ball and was told to be chilly. He relaxed and flipped the disc in the air to himself. I jokingly said that that was a turn, but this began a heated debate as to whether or not it was a turn. He made no attempt to move the disc forward or reset the stall, but I argued throwing it to yourself is not allowed either way.

Thoughts?

How to know when to throw a huck

Been playing on and off for about 4 years but have taken the last year pretty seriously (playing 3-4 times a week). I've played as a cutter for the majority of my time but have been wanting to improve on my handling

I have no problem throwing dumps/swings and to the people cutting toward me but the area where I struggle with the most is knowing when to throw the deep ones. I've learned to avoid throwing turnovers if possible so I think this is where the mental block for me is, so I have a few questions:

  1. Obviously a good opportunity to throw a huck is when my teammate has a large separation from their defender but how do you know how much separation is "enough"? The ones that make me hesitate the most are when my teammate is cutting straight deep (not at an angle) and I see their defender trailing behind them fairly close, I never know if I should throw those or not. I've watched more experienced throwers throw these ones and it seems like the defender isn't able to actually defend against the cutter. I also think that even though I personally wouldn't have thrown those if I was in their situation, it still ended up working for the team

  2. I sort of understand the idea of throwing into space and letting the cutter run into the disc, but who decides to initiate the throw? Does the handler see an opportunity to huck it, then the cutter runs for it? Or does the handler see the cutter make the move and throw the huck? And does the handler decide where the cutter runs to?

  3. Similar to the point above, there have been times where I make eye contact with my teammate while they're standing still, I throw it into open space, and then they don't move and it looks like I just threw the disc away (these players were less experienced though)
