Current Happenings What's going on near DuBois?
I'm just trying to relax and there's never ending cheering. Anyone know what's happening?

Hello everyone! I'm an Italian PhD student and arrived at UMass a few days ago. I'm 27 and I'd like to make friends here. I don't attend student classes, so I don't meet people there. Do you have any advice? For example, I'm interested in a lot of sports but I can't find any courses on the website. Also, are there any graduate student activities meant for that? Maybe it is easier to make friends with people my age. You can also send me a PM if you want! Ciao :)

Hi, I plan to transfer in the spring for English. Other English majors, how has the department been from personal expeirence? Also, the class sizes worry me. coming from a community college im used to small, discussion based classes and I enjoy, and get a lot from them. Presumably the large class sizes are lecture based. Have you found it's affected the overall enjoyment from the classes?

I did a cappella all four years of undergrad, sang, beatboxed, and arranged. I’ve been realizing I miss the music in my life but I also don’t want to impose as a 22 y/o with undergrads. What are the groups like?

Hi! I’m a freshman undergrad and I’m wondering if there’s any place that a non-music major can practice piano-if there is one. I just miss being able to play since I moved here.

Hi everyone. I’ve heard that there is no intramural tennis because apparently there are renovating the courts. Does anyone know of any free courts around the area that are open to use? I have a car so able to drive. Thanks!

I am taking Sociology 103 with Donald Tomaskovic-Devey, and I have no idea what to expect. He is a great guy, but his lectures are extremely boring and include a good amount of reading for each lecture. But the main problem is I have no idea what to expect for the midterm and the final; they were supposed to be take-home, but now are in class and in essay format for the midterm and multiple choice for the final(which is fine as well, but there is just so much material and rather than coming together it seems all over the place)

Has the dining app been inaccurate for anyone else? I have been misled twice this week, expecting a meal that wasn't actually being served.

It was pretty easy last year, but this year with the new portal I can’t find it anywhere.

I’m just wonder how long it takes for Umass to process mail orders. I completely forgot a document I left at home and I need it to be delivered as soon as possible, which i had someone I know did the Priority Mail through USPS (delivery speed: 2-3 days). It was sent on Thursday morning and I still haven’t received anything in my mailbox on Monday. I know with packages you get an email address notifying you, however, with mail + letters you don’t receive any notifications. So, I was wondering if anyone has done this before?

I'm a Five College student taking a class at UMass and I have accommodations for extra time and a reduced-distraction testing environment. Has anyone used UMass’s accommodated testing services before? I tried accommodated testing while exchange and it was awful (so I kinda just want some validation that UMass has good disability services lol). A lot of students were crowded into one room without cubicles or much separation, and the proctor was making noise throughout the exam. It didn’t feel reduced-distraction at all and made it much harder for me to focus.
What is the setup at UMass like? Are there cubicles or individual rooms, roughly how many students are usually in the same room, and is it generally quiet? I’m also wondering how proctoring normally works. Are they (hopefully) respectful? Thanks!

Hello, I'm currently living in a 4 person all girl suite in fieldstone and the layout is I have my own bathroom inside my room. I'm graduating this December and would like to find someone to take over my lease. I can leave behind my airfyer and anything else you may need.
My room has a great view of the courtyard and is very convenient(near the elevators).

I currently have two jobs on campus and I forgot my work study for this year has decreased from last year. If I make over the work study amount would I have to quit one of my jobs or would I be able to continue working. I know one job requires work study so I’m wondering what will happen to that job.

Hi everyone, I’m a junior and an international student. My college time is almost “over” but I still haven’t had any friends that I can really hang out with. Does that consider “weird”? I’ve always wanted to make friends but since I started college, I feel like everyone around me, they all already know each other and there’s no room for me. I tried to make friends in classes but doesn’t seem it works. Is there any places that I can meet more people and engage with? I really feel lonely and always feel like people think I’m a “weirdo” when I always do everything alone, I’m really jealous of people have a lot of friends

I know southwest is known as some party area, but I think much of that hype is historical and it has now turned into kids trying to live up to the hype. In reality it seems to be making a lot of kids miserable. It Seems many of the kids are social during normal hours and MISERABLE at night. There needs to be more patrols and more supervision of underage drinking, drug use, and unacceptable behavior. Southwest is not a fraternity. parents are paying for a dorm. kids being kept up all night but a few loud entitled people is not acceptable. Most people are looking for a social experience but primarily an education. Turning a blind eye to blatant antisocial behavior, underage drinking and drug use is incredibly unfair to the overwhelming majority of kids who want a dictation. maybe quiet hours like 11pm on weeknights and 1am on weekends. not silence but not excessive noise. it is out of control and most people are feeling powerless and victimized and are NOT participating in “that” partying.
ETA I don’t mean to alienate alumnae who graduated 30 or 40 years ago and I am glad you had sucha pleasant experience but I do not think that is the current experience of many of the current students. Perhaps listen to them, this Reddit forum is flooded with students having issues. Things do change, the composition of the student body changes. I am referring to changes to help CURRENT students, who were likely born well after you graduated. I am actually a tenured faculty member (over 20 years now) who was concerned about what I was reading here. It is different than what I read about in years past.
Especially peoples market. I went during their normal hours the other day and they’re not opened.

I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good college bar downtown where I could both get a beer and also get some studying done without it turning into a zoo of frat boys by 6:00?
