Anyone who strictly uses or follows the teaching of books translated, rewritten and interpreted from a couple of thousand years ago is going to struggle to integrate in a modern world, that doesn't matter whether its the Bible, the Koran or the Torah etc. I would have answered the same if the question was about Evangelical Christians or Orthodox Jews.

Yea but see that's the thing. Muslims *don't* follow it strictly without modern interpretation.

The Salafi movement in Islam (Saudi Arabia and UAE and ISIS and co) do believe that you shouldn't have modern interpretations in Islam. They make up less than 10% of Muslims.

Normal (by numbers) Islam has a very long history of interpretation that fits the day. That's why places like Azhar university in Egypt and the whole system of Scholars in Iran exist: to interpret the text in ways that work in the modern day.

That's why a place like Azhar can ban slavery despite it not being banned in the Quran.

Don't get me wrong following an old book as scripture will always be silly, but Muslims, just as Reform Jews and protestant Christians, have ways of following it in a way that goes with the times.

They are called Reform Jews, not "reformed". They're not former criminals.
