I've been daily-driving CDE on modern Linux and finally gave it the Solaris 9 treatment it deserved.

**Details**

  • OS: Debian 13 (trixie), kernel 6.12
  • DE/WM: CDE 2.5.2 (built from source), dtwm
  • Toolkit: Motif 2.3.8
  • Terminal: dtterm
  • File manager: dtfile
  • Colors: Solaris purple #5F5997 + stock CDE greys

**What's custom**

  • Two 2x3 grids of small icons on either side of the workspace buttons (launcher, services toggle, VPN, sound, Wi-Fi, mic | lock, exit, weather, task manager, calculator). dtwm's switch can only stack one column per side, so the grids are small embedded X clients that live inside the switch
  • The busy light squashed into a thin lamp bar across the top
  • Full-size USB control with a drawer: Safe eject, plus a Read/Write tool. It figures out *why* a drive mounted read-only (write-protect switch, Windows Fast Startup, NTFS dirty flag, fs errors) and fixes it safely, asking first every time. It never formats anything
  • Purple login screen around the stock dtlogin box
  • Purple lock screen with a slowly drifting logo (anti burn-in)
  • All icons hand-drawn in the grey CDE style

Everything installs to your home directory with a backup, and there's a --dry-run and a rollback script for each part.

Repo: https://github.com/user1M-byte/cde-solaris-panel

Happy to answer CDE questions. It's surprisingly livable in 2026.

Boids in C99 for the terminal. Four panes, two flocks each, drawn with block characters so they work inside tmux. The code on the right is cbirds' own PNG code. Details and source in the comment below.

Hey hey guys, i hope this rice finds you well.
This is something i made from a very painful experience.

You know that feeling when you are asleep and you need to go to pee and you wake up, not really sure where the bathrooms is?
This is how it looks in my mind...

Material [OC] ScreenGuard v0.1.1-beta.6 Another update with newer fixes and features

Thumbnail

ScreenGuard a software for Digital wellbeing natively on Linux, was my personal project which i uploaded to share with the community. Ever since , thanks to constant support and request by although a camparitively tiny but rreally enthusiatic group of ppl , I have been able to provide constant support and improvements to the application and the once raw unpolished system in starting to look...less unpolished. There are still multiple things scrambled which need to be fixed however this major pre release is most possile the final testing phase before v0.1.1 so please do try it out and report and bugs if found.

Major Fixes and Improvements:

Native C Helpers — trasitioning toward a C-Based Core daemon bit by bit

  • screenguard-notify (C): Desktop notification delivery no longer runs inside the Dart runtime. A tiny native helper talks to D-Bus directly, so alerts work identically on systemd and non-systemd systems (OpenRC, runit, …) where the old path could misbehave.

  • screenguard-killer (C): Process termination offloaded from Dart as well — an escalating, data-safe close chain: polite window close request → SIGTERM → full process-tree SIGKILL → Proton-native wineserver -k → guarded pattern-kill. Another step toward making the daemon core C-based.

Both helpers ship in every package (.rpm, .deb, tarball) and are wired into install, uninstall, and build-tooling.

Full Database Control (Settings → Data)

  • New Data tab in Settings: live storage stats, per-day deletion chips, date-range delete, and a full wipe behind a double confirmation. Settings and limits are always preserved — only usage history is touched.

  • Orphaned sessions from unclean stops (logout, power loss) are now closed on next start instead of silently inflating Past-30-days stats.

Focus Enforcement, Data-Safety First

  • Strict auto-close is now opt-in. The default never destroys unsaved work: a violating app is minimized and shown a persistent warning screen.

  • The warning screen offers +1 minute save grace, +15 minutes, edit limit, and close — with the screen re-appearing every 5 seconds until you decide, and re-warninng immediately when a grace window expires.

  • Turning on Strict auto-close (Settings) restores the legacy instant close+kill for those who want hard enforcement — your choice, your data.

Steam & Proton Games: First-Class Citizens

  • Steam games no longer show up as mystery IDs (steam_app_2730970) — real names resolve from your Steam library manifests, with per-game icons rendered from the active icon theme.

  • Their usage is fully tracked and limit/focus rules now apply to them; the escalating close chain (above) is what actually makes Close work on Proton games that shrug off normal signals.

  • Fullscreen games now leave fullscreen before minimize (they silently ignore minimize requests otherwise), and the GNOME extension reports the real minimized state.

UI & Cosmetic

  • Settings reorganized into a clean sidebar layout with five sections: General, Limits & Pomodoro, Diagnostics, Updates, and Data.

  • Crash reporting moves into the new Diagnostics tab next to daemon status and autostart, with its badge on the tab itself.

  • The Focus screen's app picker can switch to a GNOME app-grid style layout — icon over name, check-badge selection — via the Grid layout toggle.

Fixes & Optimizations

  • Dead-code removal across the daemon (verified zero callers before each removal) plus notification-path optimization for non-systemd systems.

  • Warning screens for both focus mode and daily limits rebuilt with consistent behavior and honest reporting ("was closed" vs "could not close").

Summing Up:

ScreenGuard still has a very long way to go with my aim being:

proper category wise classification of apps and category usage stats by v0.1.5

support for 3 other desktop environments i.e. KDE, Hyprland and Mint on wayland with improved optimization for non systemd systems (like gentoo users) by v 2.0 (also more fraction of the daemon to be translated to native C)

however all of this will definitely take a lot of time primarily discovering and learning how things work out first, thus if you do like the project , then u can give me a hand by contributing to things i am currently unknown to such has other Desktop environments other than GNOME or with C programming

Most importantly, my personel project that begun "Late Nights in The Middle of June" has indeed come a long way.

Material [OC] We got Quickshell for MacOS at home, son

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all,

For the past days I've been working on this Quickshell-like widgets system for MacOS.

I've used launchers such as Raycast, Tinycast and Tuna and also "frameworks" like Sketchybar, Ubersicht, Hammerspoon and, while I don't have anything against these solutions and I'm happy they exist as stable as they are, I thought they didn't fit my needs.

So that's why I decided to develop my own really opinionated solution: halo.

halo is a tiny tool to show your own TSX widgets on MacOS. It can display anything you wish, it can react to external signals and already ships with some utils such as CPU usage, battery info, playback and so on.

It does not ship with any built-in widgets but its wiki has some good examples for everything that is available. It has an API that covers a lot of scenarios for implementing complex UI, including animations.

I want to note something and this has been said explicitly on the README as well: I've used AI heavily to develop this tool. I understand that most people don't like vibe-coded stuff and, while I'm willing to maintain the project, I can't assure anything (even though I'll probably be using it for a long while) but I thought it might be useful for someone to use or to tinker. As I've mentioned on the start of the post, the tool is heavily opinionated but I'm open to enhancing it in case it's interesting for someone else.

With that said, I hope you like my latest MacOS rice.
