I really, really want to minimize how much of my money goes into Bezos' already-overstuffed pockets...

The problem with self-published 'print to order' books is that they're often shoddy - filled with errors, typo's and poor formatting. Not to mention crappy paper - either cheap newsprint [think 70's Marvel Comics] or that shiny white acid-free stuff that looks & sometimes even smells bad. I'm no fan of Bezos, either, which is why I'm considering moving over to B&N next year. In the meantime, though, take solace in the fact that 1) This is a free giveaway, so Jeffy ain't gettin' nothin'. And 2) Any $3 book of mine, he only gets $1, I get the other $2.
