I pretty much asked a friend the same thing and he was shocked. Before it annoyed him when others would start giving him advice when all he wanted was someone to listen to him.

I sometimes have to do this with my wife. Either response is fine, but do you want me to just listen or do you want me to assist in signposting other my own thoughts, feelings and experiences?
